U.S. officers in Israel for military exercise

“US army officers have begun arriving in Israel ahead of joint military manoeuvres between the countries’ armed forces, an Israeli newspaper said on Sunday.  The officers will supervise the arrival of hundreds of US troops on October 14 for joint manoeuvres that will take place the following week and last for three weeks, according to Yediot Aharonot.  The US-Israeli exercises will be the most important yet between the two countries, the paper said.  Yediot said Israel’s air defences will be tested on this occasion, including its Hetz missile-to-missile batteries and its ‘Iron Dome’ rocket interception system.”

“The devaluation of the rial and soaring prices of staple goods are the latest signs that western sanctions – targeting the regime’s nuclear programme – and government mismanagement are compounding the country’s economic woes.  On Wednesday, many foreign exchange dealers and bureaux across the country refused to trade dollars and some currency-monitoring websites refused to announce exchange rates.  The authorities were also reported to have jammed signals of the BBC’s Persian service as the protest unfolded.”

U.S. pushing Gulf nations to develop missile defense

“The US official said Washington has already expressions of interest from some of the Gulf nations in developing missile defense capabilities and they hoped to have some announcements of contracts in the coming months.  The discussions are taking place within the framework of a new strategic cooperation forum set up in March, which has also led to the first joint maritime exercise held which involved 12 navies and some 30 countries.”
