“A nano brewery is limited to producing 2000 barrels of beer a year. Why 2000? Nobody knows. It’s a nice round number, though. Pint Glass Half Full In the year after the bill passed, more breweries opened in New Hampshire than have opened in any other time in the state’s history, including right after Prohibition ended.  Along the way, we also helped legalize home winemaking. House Bill 253 created a second generation of nano breweries. This license costs an extra $240, but we can finally sell full pints! Governor Hassan signed the bill on July 24, 2013, effective that September. Since then, New Hampshire has seen an explosion of nano breweries, with more on the way.”

How to get a piece of the $400 million ‘Atocha’ shipwreck treasure

“On July 20, 1985, U.S. treasure hunter Mel Fisher discovered the sunken treasure of the Spanish galleon, Nuestra Señora de Atocha. The ship was part of a fleet of Spanish ships that sank in 1622 after sailing through a hurricane. Fisher spent nearly 17 years searching for the wreck but it proved to be worth his time. In total, more than 40 tons of silver and gold were recovered by Fisher’s team off the coast of the Marquesas Keys, a small group of islands about 30 miles west of Key West, Florida. The treasure was worth roughly $400 million.  To mark the 30th anniversary of the discovery, Guernsey’s auction house in New York will be auctioning off some items from the Fisher collection.”

Grooveshark co-founder Josh Greenberg found dead at 28

“Greenberg’s death comes several weeks after Grooveshark reached a final settlement with the record labels that sued it out of business over copyright violations. To avoid a damages trial that could’ve awarded those labels hundreds of millions of dollars, Grooveshark agreed to wipe away its entire existence, erasing all servers and giving ownership of its web domain, mobile applications, and all intellectual property to the labels.  At its peak, the service tallied between 35 million and 40 million users and employed 145 people.”

Greek Island to Trial Gold-Backed Digital Currency Alternative to the Euro

“The mayor of the Greek island of Angistri has agreed to a trial of the digital currency Nautiluscoin as a way to attract tourists.  Brian Kelly, the founder of Nautiluscoin, published an article on CNBC on July 8 announcing the news that mayor Ioannis Athanasiou had given his support to the plan.  Angistri is a 13.3 square kilometer island near the Greek port of Piraeus, and a population of 1,142 inhabitants.  To explain the difference between Nautiluscoin and other digital currencies such as Bitcoin, Kelly described how a central ‘Nautiluscoin Stability Fund’ plans to keep the majority of the coins itself, only selling them when demand has risen.”

The inventor was inspired to create robots, in particular six-legged walking machines, having been a huge fan of sci-fi movies from a very early age. He honed his skills in electronics and computer software during his years of working in film and made his first small hexapod robot in 2001.”

Since 2012 we count more than 50 investments totaling $2.3 billion. In the past 18 months alone Alibaba has plowed more than $1 billion into just ten U.S. firms.  Many of the investments are bizarre on the surface, smacking of dumb money rushing in late in the cycle and driving up valuations for everyone. Why would an e-commerce giant spend tens of millions of dollars on a startup that’s outside of its core business, and country?  In a word: smartphones.”

Ex-Reddit Engineer Is Building a Decentralized Reddit

“Days after the proposal of billionaire venture capitalist Fred Wilson to create a decentralized social media platform, Ryan X. Charles, ex-Reddit cryptocurrency engineer, has announced in a blog post that he wants to collaborate with others to create a decentralized Reddit.  Charles and the Reddit development team planned to get rid of third-party services and institutions like banks and payment processors by integrating bitcoin as the only payment option for the platform. However, after taking US$50 million in funding, Reddit replaced their management, and Yishan resigned ‘due to exhaustion.’ Reddit shelved Charles’ project and fired him soon after.”

Bitcoin: Greece’s new euro workaround?

“Joaquin Fenoy was wandering the streets of Athens Friday, doing his bit to ease Greece’s currency restrictions. He wasn’t handing out cash, but rather installing an ATM with a withdrawal limit of €1,000 (about $1,100). That’s €940 above the €60 daily ATM withdrawal limit the Greek government put in place to stop a bank run as its creditors decide the country’s financial fate. There is one catch, though: You need to have the virtual currency bitcoin to use it.  In Greece’s case, worried relatives in London could buy bitcoins and transfer them to the digital wallet of a family member in Athens, who could then withdraw the bitcoins as euros from Bitchain’s ATM.”
