Google barge, kicked out of S.F. Bay, gets warm welcome in Stockton

“The arrival of Google’s barge in Stockton has given a city beleagered by bankruptcy and negative press a jolt of excitement and hope.  Some see the arrival of the tech giant’s barge — believed to be some sort of floating showroom — as a potential boost to the economy and a move to help counter its negative image.  Google’s barge is made from dozens of shipping containers. It will be housed at the Port of Stockton for six months while the company completes construction of the boat.  In February the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission ordered Google to relocate the barge because the company did not obtain the proper permits to build it at the port.”

Jack Ma’s U.S. Inspiration Set Path to Alibaba IPO

While visiting a friend in Seattle who showed him the Internet, Ma typed the word ‘beer’ and couldn’t find any Chinese information. He decided to fix it.   Almost 20 years later, Alibaba is China’s largest online retailer, and Ma’s U.S.-inspired brainchild is readying for an initial public offering in New York that could raise as much as $20 billion, potentially making it the largest IPO there ever. The valuation may make the 49-year-old entrepreneur the third-wealthiest in China, with $12.5 billion, and one of the 100 richest worldwide in the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.”

“Tehran traffic authorities have introduced restrictions on the amount of cars on its roads in attempt to reduce congestion and pollution in Tehran downtown.  They did this by adopting odd-even traffic restriction on alternative days. Cars with number plates ending with odd numbers were restricted one day and the next day cars with number plates ending with even numbers were restricted.  Since they have started using traffic cameras to check the car plate numbers, a new strange job has formed. They get money from you before you approach the traffic camera and just walk behind your car while you drive slowly.”

Bitcoin Miner Taps Dad’s Austrian Power Plant in Virtual-Money Hunt

The expatriate living in Tokyo has 30 remote-controlled servers mining virtual gold in an old brick building in the Austrian countryside. His father is donating the electricity, which comes from a water-driven turbine that survived a World War II bombing raid and once powered the entire village of Tattendorf, where Wilhelm grew up.   While the operation is modest as mining farms go, it illustrates a basic point: the race to uncover cyber cash has become so energy intensive that power bills now make it mostly unprofitable.”

New Colorado Marijuana Vending Machines Will Accept Bitcoin

“The first machine that can be accessed directly by consumers was finally unveiled at an invite-only event in Colorado last week.  Billed as the first marijuana vending machine in America, the ZaZZZ unit is perhaps more accurately described as the first machine that will not be placed behind a sales counter. It offers a number of novel compliance features, including a driver’s license reader and a camera that captures video of users.  ZaZZZ machines also have another notable feature: they accept only a limited number of payment options including the ZaZZZ Card, cash, and perhaps most notably, bitcoin.”

Mt. Gox Suitors Launch Last-Ditch Bid To Revive Bitcoin Exchange

“U.S. investors seeking to revive Mt. Gox have launched a last-ditch effort to convince a Japanese bankruptcy court to support their proposal after the failed bitcoin exchange announced it would abandon a rehabilitation plan and instead move to liquidate its assets. As part of this effort, the investor group has launched a website, savegox.com, to explain its proposal and create a mechanism for Mt. Gox’s 127,000 creditors to express their support for it.  The group’s proposed new exchange would be led by John Betts, who built electronic trading platforms at Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Morgan Stanley in New York.”
