Israeli Bitcoin Company Opens First Vietnamese Bitcoin Exchange

“The idea to expand into Vietnam was developed over a bitcoin-purchased beer in an Israeli bar. Eli’s friend, Dominik, a German bitcoiner, understood the opportunity for bitcoin in Vietnam, as his wife is Vietnamese.  Bit2C’s stress-tested and proven technology comes at a dire time for Vietnam. The country is a quickly-expanding market, with over 80 million people suffering from the effects of inflation.  Using bitcoin saves an incredible amount on remittances; of massive importance because the Vietnamese population overseas is ‘over 4 million people, [making it] a top 10 country in the remittance market with more than 10.6 billion dollars a year in incoming transactions,’ Dominik explains.”

Tax-free zones created around 8 NY colleges under Start-Up NY

“Gov. Cuomo has touted the program as a way to entice new businesses to New York, which is among the highest-taxed states in the country.  The state is spending taxpayers’ money on ads running across the country to promote the program.  Existing businesses have expressed concern that the new companies will have an unfair advantage.  If accepted into the initiative, businesses will operate with no income tax, business tax, corporate tax, state taxes, local taxes, sales tax, property tax and franchise fees for 10 years. To be eligible, businesses must create new jobs in the first year. Higher-paid workers would have to pay income taxes after five years.”

Meet the manic miner who wants to mint 10% of all new bitcoins

“In a couple of large buildings near the Columbia River in Eastern Washington, where hydroelectricity is cheap and plentiful, Dave Carlson oversees what he says is one of the largest Bitcoin mining operations on the planet.  At any given time, Carlson’s goal is to account for seven to 10 percent of the entire world’s Bitcoin mining as measured by processing or hashing power, he said. The operations are fueled by thousands of mining rigs containing more than 1.4 million BitFury mining chips, while Raspberry Pis loaded with custom software direct traffic on each rig.  MegaBigPower does the biggest portion of its mining on behalf of its primary investor, the BioInfoBank Institute in Poland.”

Court Grants Order to Freeze Hashfast’s Bitcoin Wallets

“A court in Fort Worth, Texas, has granted a temporary restraining order to freeze the bitcoin wallets of ASIC mining hardware manufacturer HashFast Technologies LLC and HashFast LLC, after a customer claimed it failed to deliver hardware on time or negotiate a refund.  The granting of a court order to freeze bitcoin assets of mining hardware companies who fail to deliver on time could have ramifications in an industry beset by delays as small and inexperienced participants grapple with issues related to cutting edge hardware design and production.”

MP3tunes and its founder liable for $63 million in EMI copyright suit

“Michael Robertson is an entrepreneur who is no stranger to drawn-out legal battles. He founded MP3.com, an early music storage service that was ultimately sued out of existence by record labels. And in 2005, he founded MP3tunes, which eventually suffered the same fate. MP3tunes filed for bankruptcy in 2012 after ‘four and a half years of legal torment,’ wrote Robertson.  But the lawsuit against MP3tunes, filed by the EMI record label in 2007, marched onward even after the company’s demise. Yesterday a Manhattan jury handed down a verdict in favor of EMI. It ruled that Robertson should be liable for copyright violations for the creation of MP3tunes.”

As Bitcoin Companies Mature, More Take Talent from the Mainstream

“Andy Goldstein worked at Visa for 16 years before taking a job at BitPay, a Bitcoin merchant services startup.  At Visa, Goldstein was most recently senior business development leader in the merchant sales and solutions group. He is now a regional sales manager at Atlanta-based BitPay, focused on integrating large enterprise merchants in the eastern U.S. and eastern Canada.  Goldstein resigned from Visa but left the company on good terms. ‘Some of my fellow co-workers were excited that I was pursuing my passion as I did not keep it a secret that I was very into Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies,’ he says.”

New Active Trading Bitcoin Fund Seeks UK Investors

“The Bitcoin Superfund will use a combination of algorithmic and human trading to achieve a higher rate of return than a simple ‘buy-and-hold’ strategy, its founders claim.  There is no specific launch date at present, but the Superfund is in the process of identifying institutional and high-net-worth investors to reach a target of £5m ($8.3m) under management at launch.  However, the fund is seeking Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) approval to operate in the UK, but with the FCA yet to issue any definitive statement on bitcoin, it is unclear how long this will take or if it will be possible.”

The Benefits of Bitcoin in International Travel

“Bitcoin solves many problems that international travellers currently deal with. It eliminates the hassle and fees associated with converting to local currencies and carrying cash, and it securely protects the payment credentials of consumers to avoid fraud risk and the potential to lose bank account access in a foreign country.  While it is tough to travel with only bitcoin on international trips at the moment, the rapid merchant adoption of bitcoin is changing this.  Travel-focused merchants such as CheapAir.comBTCTrip and Pointshound are just a few merchants generating significant bitcoin sales from international travellers.”
