Nuclear weapon missing since 1950 ‘may have been found’

“The story of the lost nuke has mystified military historians for more than half a century. In 1950, American B-36 Bomber 075 crashed near British Columbia on its way to Carswell Air Force Base in Texas. The plane was on a secret mission to simulate a nuclear strike and had a real Mark IV nuclear bomb on board to see if it could carry the payload required.  Several hours into its flight, its engines caught fire and the crew had to parachute to safety. Out of a 17-person crew, five didn’t make it.”

Wall Street Can’t Agree on When to Halt the U.S. Stock Market

“On Thursday, the nation’s three major exchange operators upgraded their rules to help prevent a repeat of the chaos seen on Aug. 24, 2015, when many securities suddenly sank. But a major sticking point remains, according to an official who spoke at an event hours after NYSE Group, Nasdaq Inc. and Bats Global Markets Inc. announced their changes.  The U.S. stock market has a circuit breaker that briefly stops all trading when there’s a big enough decline. It imposes a 15-minute pause when a 7 percent drop occurs, another 15-minute suspension at 13 percent, and a full-day halt at 20 percent.”

Linux bug leaves USA Today, other top sites vulnerable to serious hijacking attacks

“The vulnerability resides in the design and implementation of RFC 5961, a relatively new Internet standard that’s intended to prevent certain classes of hacking attacks. In fact, the protocol is designed in a way that it can easily open Internet users to so-called blind off-path attacks, in which hackers anywhere on the Internet can detect when any two parties are communicating over an active transmission control protocol connection. Attackers can go on to exploit the flaw to shut down the connection, inject malicious code or content into unencrypted data streams, and possibly degrade privacy guarantees provided by the Tor anonymity network.”

If you use ‘smart’ Bluetooth locks, you’re asking to be burgled

“Bluetooth-enabled locks are increasingly popular, but an analysis of 16 such devices shows 12 are easily hackable with inexpensive kit and some can be broken into from 400 metres away.  When Rose contacted the 12 manufacturers about these issues, one Chinese manufacturer shut down its website, but still sells on Amazon. Ten other companies simply ignored his messages. One firm did come back to him, acknowledging the issue, but said it wasn’t going to fix it.   The Kwickset Kevo lock has a ‘fantastic’ software security system with strong crypto, Rose said, but should be avoided because the lock was so badly made you could open it in seconds with a screwdriver.”

A New Wireless Hack Can Unlock 100 Million Volkswagens

“Volkswagen left not only its ignition vulnerable but the keyless entry system that unlocks the vehicle’s doors, too. And this time, they say, the flaw applies to practically every car Volkswagen has sold since 1995.  One of the attacks would allow resourceful thieves to wirelessly unlock practically every vehicle the Volkswagen group has sold for the last two decades, including makes like Audi and Škoda. The second attack affects millions more vehicles, including Alfa Romeo, Citroen, Fiat, Ford, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Opel, and Peugeot.  Both attacks use a cheap, easily available piece of radio hardware to intercept signals from a victim’s key fob, then employ those signals to clone the key.”

Bitcoin Exchange Loses $60M In Hack; US Regulations ‘Prevented Cold Storage Use’

“Bitfinex was previously fined $75,000 by the CFTC for failing to register as an appropriate entity for the services it offered as well as:  ‘[F]or offering illegal off-exchange financed retail commodity transactions in bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.’  These ‘off-exchange’ transactions could be alluding to the storage of funds offline — commonly known as cold storage — one of the best ways to keep your funds out of hackers’ reach. If this is indeed the case then the incident could undermine calls for more regulation as cryptocurrency exchanges face a dilemma between security and compliance.”

France descending into militarized state ruled by fear

“The State of Emergency declared after the November 13 atrocity was extended at the weekend by a further three months. Some 120,000 police and troops are now reportedly deployed across France, up from the already record high level of 115,000 security personnel on alert during the Euro 16 football championship. A further 12,000 police reservists are being called called up.  It is now routine to see armed soldiers patrolling among shoppers and cafe goers along French city streets. Citizens have to submit to random checks on their bags, body pat downs and metal detector arches as they enter public buildings.  There are even demands from Marine Le Pen, the National Front leader, for the return of compulsory national service.  Over the past year, thousands of French citizens have been arrested or had their homes raided by police without warrants. Some 20,000 people are said to be under surveillance by French authorities.  The State of Emergency has also seen the government banning public demonstrations against unpopular legislation to curtail workers’ rights. That unprecedented infringement on civil liberties has been justified as a necessary ‘national security’ measure to combat terror threats.  France has thus entered a permanent emergency state, marked by high levels of police powers and militarization of society, and the suspension of democratic rights and freedoms. This is merely a few degrees away from outright dictatorship.  The international aspect of the French government’s response is equally problematic. It has announced a stepwise increase in air strikes avowedly against terror groups in Syria and Iraq. French officials are reportedly traveling to Washington this week to coordinate greater military deployment in those two countries.  The French state, like its NATO partners, is plowing into a snake pit. The covert destabilizing of Syria (and Libya) for regime change involving the weaponization of terror proxies is a recipe for endless blowback. The subsequent ‘anti-terror’ bombing of Arab countries in flagrant violation of international law is a further foot into the snake pit.”

Deutsche Bank May Be Top Contributor to Systemic Risk, IMF Says

“Concern over Frankfurt-based Deutsche Bank’s financial strength has weighed on the company’s stock and make it the worst-valued global lender.  ‘The relative importance of Deutsche Bank underscores the importance of risk management, intense supervision of G-SIBs and the close monitoring of their cross-border exposures, as well as rapidly completing capacity to implement the new resolution regime,’ the IMF said in the report.  Deutsche Bank currently exceeds its capital requirements and is shrinking its balance sheet to comply with regulations as they become stricter.”

Taiwanese gov. blows up fishermen with supersonic missile

“Taiwan’s navy mistakenly launched a supersonic anti-ship missile from a naval base, killing one person and injuring three, officials say.  A patrol boat was undergoing a drill inspection in Kaohsiung when the Hsiung Feng III missile was fired, Taiwan’s Central News Agency (CNA) reported.   It launched in the direction of mainland China, and hit a fishing boat off the Penghu islands, CNA added.  A Taiwanese official said the launch was not ‘politically motivated’.  It came as China celebrates the 95th anniversary of the formation of the Chinese Communist Party.  China considers Taiwan a breakaway province, to be reunited with the mainland, by force if necessary.”

FBI failed to tell hundreds that they were on an ISIS kill list

“Between March 2 and the end of May, hacked ISIS accounts exposed eight kill lists.  They included the names and addresses of 70 plus military personnel or family members, 56 New Jersey state police officers, 36 Minnesota state police officers, 11 county board members in Tennessee, 50 federal employees, and dozens of New York residents.  In Texas, just two of the 24 people contacted whose names were on the hit lists were aware of the threat against them.  When Circa asked the local police forces if they knew anything about their residents on the hit list, they too admitted that they had been left in the dark.”
