FBI admits no major cases cracked with Patriot Act snooping powers

FBI agents can’t point to any major terrorism cases they’ve cracked thanks to the key snooping powers in the Patriot Act, the Justice Department’s inspector general said in a report Thursday.  Inspector General Michael E. Horowitz said that between 2004 and 2009, the FBI tripled its use of bulk collection under Section 215 of the Patriot Act, which allows government agents to compel businesses to turn over records and documents, and increasingly scooped up records of Americans who had no ties to official terrorism investigations.  Backers say the Patriot Act powers are critical and must be kept intact, particularly with the spread of the threat from terrorists.”

3D Printed Robot Cracks Combination Locks in Less than 30 Seconds

“A well-known California hacker Samy Kamkar who is expert in cracking locks has built a 3D-printed machine, calling his gadget the ‘Combo Breaker,’ that can crack Master Lock combination padlocks – used on hundreds of thousands of school lockers – in less than 30 seconds.  A couple of weeks ago, Kamkar introduced the world how a manufacturing flaw in Master Lock combination locks can easily reveal the full combination by carefully measuring the dial interaction with the shackle in eight or fewer attempts.  The hacker has also released the plans, 3D models, and code of Combo Breaker online for free as open source.”

Flawed Android Factory Reset Fails to Clear Private Data from Phones

“If you’re planning to sell your old Android smartphone then you need to think again because there is a weakness in the Android Factory Reset option that could be exploited to recover your login credentials, text messages, emails and pictures even if you have wiped its memory clean.  Computer researchers at the University of Cambridge conducted a study on Android devices from 5 different vendors and found that more than 500 Million Android devices don’t completely erase data after the factory reset.  The computer researchers found that the data could be recovered from the Android device even if users turned on full-disk encryption.”

Leaked Adult Friend Finder user database still online

“Adult Friend Finder, one of the largest online dating sites, may have been breached more than two months ago, and the sensitive files—include names, ages, email addresses, zip codes and more—are apparently still online.  British broadcaster Channel 4 reported Thursday that the website had been breached, although information regarding the breach had been trickling out in a low-key way for some time. Adult Friend Finder, which was founded in 1996, has more than 40 million members, according to its website. FriendFinder Networks says it has more than 600 million registered users across some 40,000 websites in its network.”

Permissionless Innovation: Do you need government approval to invent?

“In cities across the country, taxicab commissions have appealed to government to stop Uber, Lyft and other such ride-sharing programs.  New York City has threatened Airbnb, a home rental company fueled by connecting homeowners with potential renters via the Internet.  What about things such as smart cars, drones delivering goods, biomedical devices and 3D printers — things just entering the mainstream?  These and other emerging technologies are facing intense scrutiny and disrupting established business models, but at the same time they’re providing consumers with faster service, more choice and lower prices.”

St. Louis Federal Reserve Suffers DNS Breach

“The St. Louis Federal Reserve today sent a message to those it serves alerting them that in late April 2015 attackers succeeded in hijacking the domain name servers for the institution. The attack redirected Web searches and queries for those seeking a variety of domains run by the government entity to a Web page set up by the attackers in an apparent bid by cybercrooks to hijack online communications of banks and other entities dealing with the regional Fed office. Requests for comment from the St. Louis Fed so far have gone unreturned.”

FBI offers $25,000 reward in $4.9 million fake-police gold heist

“The $25,000 reward was announced today in Miami where the gold shipment originated.  The tractor trailer with gold, silver and other valuables stopped on Interstate 95 back on March 1st after one of the guards for Transvalue, Inc. became sick.  The guard was approached by at least two armed men who announced themselves as ‘Policia’. The men gave instructions in Spanish, using zip-ties to tie up the guards. They were led into the woods.  The gunman broke into the trailer, making off with approximately $4.9 million in gold bars. Authorities say they left behind another $5 million in silver.”

Did a hacker really make a plane go sideways?

“Roberts pointed to weaknesses in the security of systems on board the Boeing 737 he was flying on, including exploitable holes in the in-flight entertainment and avionics systems. Shortly after his arrival in Syracuse, N.Y., Roberts was escorted from a United flight and questioned for more than two hours by local FBI agents.  Computer equipment in his possession, including an Apple MacBook and iPad and portable storage devices, were seized by the FBI for forensic analysis, prompting the request for a search warrant.  For Roberts, the question is why the FBI is suddenly focused on years-old research that has long been part of the public record.”

Liquidity drought could spark market bloodbath, warns IIF

“Investment banks, which traditionally supported liquidity in times of stress, have been shrinking their activities.  Corporate bond inventories have fallen by 75pc in the US and 50pc in Europe since 2007, according to IIF data. While much of this has been driven by banks unwinding large credit books, regulation has also discouraged them from holding large quantities of bonds that could help cushion violent swings in prices.  Mr Adams said a ‘dramatic revolution’ of the players and risks of market making had also pushed risk ‘out into the shadows’ of non-bank lending. Mr Adams warned that the US Federal Reserve’s first interest rate rise in almost a decade would also cause disruption.”

Government Corruption Has Become Rampant

Senior SEC employees spent up to 8 hours a day surfing porn sites instead of cracking down on financial crimes.  Nuclear Regulatory Commission workers watch porn instead of cracking down on unsafe conditions at nuclear plants.  NSA spies pass around homemade sexual videos and pictures they’ve collected from spying on the American people.  NSA employees have also been caught using their mass surveillance powers to spy on love interests, such as girlfriends, obsessions or former wives … and to eavesdrop on American soldiers’ intimate conversations with their wives back home.  A TSA employee admitted that agents share – and laugh at – nude scans of passengers.”
