Popular Currency Trading Website Vanished Overnight With $1 Billion

“A popular currency trading website that gained popularity with small investors because of the high rate of returns suddenly disappeared earlier this year, and it could have taken more than $1 billion with it, Bloomberg reports.  Secureinvestment.com — which was briefly more popular than the widely trusted currency trading platform forex.com — vanished in May.  Secure Investments was linked to a fake address in Panama as well as invented offices in Hong Kong, Singapore, and London. Customers were asked to transfer funds to banks all over the world and were met with excuses when they attempted to withdraw the money.”

ISIS May Have Looted $430 Million From Mosul’s Central Bank

“The Islamic State of Iraq and al-Shams (Isis) has become the richest terror group ever after looting 500 billion Iraqi dinars – the equivalent of $429M (£256m) — from Mosul’s central bank, according to the regional governor.  Nineveh governor Atheel al-Nujaifi confirmed Kurdish televison reports that Isis militants had stolen millions from numerous banks across Mosul.  A large quantity of gold bullion is also believed to have been stolen.  Following the siege of the country’s second city, the bounty collected by the group has left it richer than al-Qaeda itself and as wealthy as small nations such as Tonga, Kiribati, the Marshall Islands and the Falkland Islands.”

Federal AIDS website insecurely transmitted user locations for years

“Everyone loves to hate Healthcare.gov, but there are plenty of other bad websites out there. Take, for example, AIDS.gov. The Washington Post reports that the site has failed to adhere to basic web security protocols for the past few years. As a result, anyone snooping on internet traffic could easily find the location and identity of someone searching for HIV testing facilities or other services.  The culprit is encryption — or rather, the lack thereof.  AIDS.gov and another similar government site offering HIV assistance has not used SSL encryption to maintain its users’ privacy.”

FBI Director: If Apple/Google Won’t Decrypt Phones, We’ll Force Them To

“Everyone is stoked that the latest versions of iOS and Android will (finally) encrypt all the information on your smartphone by default. Except, of course, the FBI: Today, its director spent an hour attacking the companies and the very idea of encryption, even suggesting that Congress should pass a law banning the practice of default encryption. Comey’s  speech and thinking was out-of-touch and off on many levels: He continually referred to potential ‘bad guys’ as the only ones using encryption, and suggested that, with default encryption, people who are wrongly arrested won’t be able to unlock data within their phones that could exonerate them.”

Law Lets I.R.S. Seize Accounts on Suspicion, No Crime Required

“Using a law designed to catch drug traffickers, racketeers and terrorists by tracking their cash, the government has gone after run-of-the-mill business owners and wage earners without so much as an allegation that they have committed serious crimes. The government can take the money without ever filing a criminal complaint, and the owners are left to prove they are innocent.  Many give up.  The I.R.S. is one of several federal agencies that pursue such cases and then refer them to the Justice Department. The Justice Department does not track the total number of cases pursued, the amount of money seized or how many of the cases were related to other crimes.”

Patriot Act ‘sneak-and-peek’ now overwhelmingly used in drug cases

“Since the Patriot Act passed, the number of of sneak-and-peeks each year has grown from about 16 per year to over 11,000 in 2013. Meanwhile, not only have the number of sneak-and-peek investigations unrelated to terrorism increased on a massive scale, the percentage of sneak-and-peeks that have anything to do with terrorism continues to drop. In other words, sneak-and-peek is increasingly ubiquitous while the justification for granting the government this power in the first place — terrorism — is not only irrelevant to the tactic’s increasing pervasiveness, it gets more irrelevant every year.”

How the World’s Top Health Body Allowed Ebola to Spiral Out of Control

“In one instance, medics weren’t deployed because they weren’t issued visas. In another, bureaucratic hurdles delayed the spending of $500,000 intended to support the disease response. Meanwhile, fresh information on the outbreak from experts in the field was slow to reach headquarters, while contact-tracers refused to work on concern they wouldn’t get paid.  The account of the WHO’s missteps, based on interviews with five people familiar with the agency who asked not to be identified, lifts the veil on the workings of an agency designed as the world’s health warden yet burdened by politics and bureaucracy.”

Obama’s New Ebola ‘Czar’ Has No Medical, Health Care Background

“President Barack Obama on Friday turned to a trusted adviser to lead the nation’s Ebola response as efforts to clamp down on any possible route of infection from three Texas cases expanded, reaching a cruise ship at sea and multiple airline flights.  Facing renewed criticism of his handling of the Ebola risk, Obama will make Ron Klain, a former chief of staff to Vice President Joe Biden, his point man on fighting Ebola at home and in West Africa. Klain will report to national security adviser Susan Rice and to homeland security adviser Lisa Monaco, the White House said.  Klain does not have a medical or a health care background.”

Despite fever, CDC cleared Ebola-infected nurse for airline flight

“A federal health official says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention cleared a nurse who has Ebola to fly from Cleveland, Ohio, to Dallas.  CDC spokesman David Daigle says now-infected Amber Joy Vinson spoke with the CDC official responsible for monitoring her health before she boarded the flight Monday.  CBS News reported that Vinson called the CDC several times before flying, saying that she did have a fever with a temperature of 99.5 degrees.  One health official told CBS News that ‘somebody dropped the ball.’  Vinson is the second Dallas nurse to become infected after treating a Liberian man who died of Ebola last week.”

Forget Alibaba: China’s Growth Story No One’s Talking About

“U.S. security officials are often unaware of breaches as they occur; and sometimes only detect the hacking weeks, months or even years later… if ever.  In general, TRANSCOM contractors must report cyberattacks to DOD, per a standard clause in all vendor contracts. But according to the SASC report, many contractors are unsure about what cyberintrusions to report, and to whom. That is, each contractor could have a separate ‘stove pipe’ reporting chain, with different rules about who gets a report, and under what circumstances. As U.S. contractors get hacked, it’s becoming crystal clear that the Chinese military is highly proficient and professional in its approach to cyberintrusion.”
