Aggressive US police take hundreds of millions from innocent motorists

“Behind the rise in seizures is a little-known cottage industry of private police-training firms that teach the techniques of ‘highway interdiction’ to departments across the country.  A private intelligence network known as Black Asphalt Electronic Networking & Notification System enabled police nationwide to share detailed reports about American motorists — criminals and the innocent alike — including their Social Security numbers, addresses and identifying tattoos, as well as hunches about which drivers to stop.  Many of the reports have been funneled to federal agencies and fusion centers as part of the government’s burgeoning law enforcement intelligence systems.”

Another Cop Shoots Himself Instead of the Dog He was Trying to Kill

“In North New Jersey, Bloomfield, a police officer shot himself instead of an ‘attacking canine’ he was trying to kill with the firearm he apparently did not know how to use.  This is hilarious beyond words to those who keep up with these incidents, because this exact same thing happened recently in Riverside County, California.  Predictably, the officer was apparently too embarrassed to allow anyone to release his name, so we don’t know who he is exactly. Essex County’s Prosecutors office released bare minimum details, also predictably, and the officer is pretty much safe.”

Video Killed Trust in Police Officers

“Of course young people growing up with YouTube will trust police officers less. The many videos of brutality don’t lie—and they confirm that, sometimes, cops do lie.  Even more often, they hold their tongues.  Any doubt that excessive force by law enforcement is a widespread problem can now be laid to rest in a single hour with nothing more than access to YouTube.  Start here or here or here. Or here. Or here. Or here. If you keep searching, you’ll come to the conclusion that this sort of violence is epidemic long before you run out of video confirmation. Then remember the vast majority of these incidents are never videotaped.”

Militarism Is a Public Safety Crisis

“The United States cannot live like other wealthy nations while dumping $1 trillion a year into a killing machine.  There is a no-fly-zone over Ferguson, Mo., because people in the U.S. government, from which local police forces take their cues, view the people of the United States increasingly as they view the people of other countries: as best controlled from the air. The War Resisters League noted this view is perpetuated by police militarization programs, such as DoD 1033 and 1122 and the Urban Areas Security Initiative, in which the St. Louis Police participate, that train, equip and arm police departments from Pentagon supplies and directives.”

They’re Coming for Your Accounts

“Just a week or two ago, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) published a horrifying paper, called The Fund’s Lending Framework and Sovereign Debt. That paper, in turn, was based on one from December 2013, called Financial and Sovereign Debt Crises: Some Lessons Learned and Those Forgotten.  Major media ignored all of this, of course.  The December 2013 document, right at the start, says that ‘financial repression’ is necessary.   That’s not my interpretation; those are their words.  It’s not just the IMF, of course. The US Treasury has had a group working on these ideas since the Bush administration.”

Are You Making This Financial “Mistake”?

“Not many people give much thought to the financial standing of the banks to which they entrust money. That’s a mistake. When you deposit money in a bank, you become an unsecured creditor holding an IOU. That IOU is only as good as the financial standing of the bank.  In return for assuming this risk, what do you get? The highest interest account I have in the US pays me a whopping 0.46% annually.  That reassuring FDIC logo on your bank’s front door masks the fact that the FDIC Insurance Fund has a reserve ratio of 0.79%. For every $100 on deposit, the FDIC has only 79 cents to back it with.  The new global model is the ‘bail-in,’ first seen during the Cyprus banking crisis that began in 2013.”

Home Ownership for Young Americans Is Falling. So What?

portallogo3

“The government owns Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. It subsidizes mortgage rates: low. They should use the home they bought as a starter home as an investment property. This is sensible investing. But this is not what most people do.  Young people who live in areas in which they cannot afford to buy a home are making a mistake, to this extent: they could have begun to develop equity by purchasing the first home with a 30-year mortgage. That is a tremendous opportunity missed. But they were going to miss it anyway. They were not going to use the property as an investment property. They were going to get on the treadmill of social status, buying ever larger houses in ever nicer neighborhoods.”

US Coast Guard Fires At Iranian Fishing Boat In Persian Gulf

“The incident occurred when Coast Guard Patrol Boat Monomoy launched a smaller vessel that approached ‘to query the Iranian dhow’ on its activities in international waters.  Dhows are wooden boats ‘typically used for trade’ throughout the region.  According to CNN, the Iranian crew ‘trained and prepared to fire a .50 caliber machine gun on [the smaller] boat as it approached as part of routine maritime security operation.’ As this action ‘demonstrated hostile intent,’ the Coast Guard fired one shot ‘in self-defense.’  The Navy reported that the dhow crew did not respond after one shot was fired.  The Coast Guard is operating with the Navy’s Fifth Fleet in the Persian Gulf.”

Bill Bonner: What Is the Point of Government?

“There is no faster path to disaster than enthusiastic leadership. Exhibit A: World War I. Exhibit B came next: the disaster known as the Great Depression. In the previous depression, 1920-21, President Harding and Treasury Secretary Andrew Mellon simply ignored it. No leadership required. Two years later the depression was over.  But in 1929, when the next one came, President Hoover and then President Roosevelt met it with aggressive leadership. Advancing the preposterous notion that they knew better than business people and investors, they promised to mitigate the Depression with ‘countercyclical policies,’ thereby stretching out the Depression for almost a decade.”

For sale: Systems to secretly track cellphone users around the globe

“Makers of surveillance systems are offering governments across the world the ability to track the movements of almost anybody who carries a cellphone, whether they are blocks away or on another continent.  The technology works by exploiting an essential fact of all cellular networks: They must keep detailed, up-to-the-minute records on the locations of their customers to deliver calls and other services to them. Surveillance systems are secretly collecting these records to map people’s travels over days, weeks or longer, according to company marketing documents and experts in surveillance technology.”
