Tokyo Police Launch Investigation into Missing Mt. Gox Bitcoin

“The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department has launched an official investigation into possible illicit activity surrounding the closure of Japan-based bitcoin exchange Mt. Gox.  The news comes roughly five months after the bitcoin exchange reported it lost roughly 744,400 BTC – then about $350m in customer funds, and about one month since Mt. Gox was approved for its Chapter 15 bankruptcy in the US.  Tokyo police [said] that they suspect roughly 27,000 BTC were stolen from the website.  The news, while vague as to how police will seek to carry out their mandate, is potentially encouraging to former exchange users still waiting for any action that could help recover their lost assets.”

Mt. Gox Head Believes No More Bitcoins Will Be Found

“‘I was always worried: ‘What if all the bitcoins got stolen?’ ‘ the 29-year-old Frenchman said in an interview, his first since a Feb. 28 news conference to announce the exchange’s bankruptcy filing.  Mr. Karpelès says the failure to find experienced executives to help him deal with day-to-day operations was a critical mistake. Instead of focusing on the company’s technology, he often spent hours each day in meetings with lawyers and bankers.  Mr. Karpelès said the exchange’s fast growth had been too much for him. In just three months after he bought Mt. Gox from founder Jed McCaleb in March 2011, the 3,000 accounts surged by a factor of 20, he said.”

But official media narratives can be just as sketchy. An AP report filed on Sunday claimed that crowds around the crime scene shouted ‘kill the police’ at dozens of heavily armed officers from more than 15 police departments. Local witnesses dispute that claim.  Everyone is watching now. A powerful Twitter topic, #IfTheyGunnedMeDown, went big last night. It asks a simple question: what picture of you will be shown on television when you’re shot by the police?”

Woman bypasses airport security on her third try in the same day

“Marilyn Jean Hartman bypassed an agent who was screening boarding passes Monday at Mineta San Jose International Airport by sneaking through with a family, said the law enforcement officials, who would speak only on condition of anonymity because the security breach is being investigated.  Hartman then went through the electronic screening process before entering an airport terminal. Authorities say she made it through screening because she had no prohibited items on her or in her purse.  Hartman, 62, then managed to board Southwest Airlines Flight 3785 to Los Angeles International Airport and was discovered once the plane landed, the officials said.”

Study Puts Exonerations at Record Level in U.S.

“The number of exonerations in the United States of those wrongly convicted of a crime increased to a record 87 during 2013, and of that number, nearly one in five had initially pleaded guilty to charges filed against them, according to a report to be released on Tuesday as part of a project led by two university law schools.  Nearly half of the exonerations — 40 — were based on murder convictions.  The previous record of known exonerations in the country came in 2009, when the group reported 83. The organization said it has documented 1,300 exonerations since 1989, most of them after convictions for murder, rape or other sexual assaults.”

Unarmed Teen’s Hands Were Up When St. Louis Cops Shot Him Dead

“A woman who says she witnessed the shooting of Michael Brown by a Ferguson, Mo., police officer said the 18-year-old had his hands up when he was killed.  The witness said Brown, 18, had turned around and was facing police with his hands in the air when the officer fired.  She said a stray bullet from the police officer’s gun hit a neighbor’s home, and she was surprised no one else was injured.  Police said that they ‘cannot say’ how many times the teen was struck when an officer shot him after an altercation, but the young man was unarmed.  ‘Was the other subject, the deceased, the 18-year-old, armed [..] ? The answer to that is no,’ said Jon Belmar, St. Louis County police chief.”

Married Tulsa police officers arrested in fatal shooting of unarmed man

“Jeremy Lake was found shot to death Tuesday night on a street near downtown, Tulsa police department spokeswoman Jillian Roberson said.  Lake was walking with the Keplers’ 18-year-old daughter, Lisa Kepler, when Shannon Kepler confronted him, Roberson said. An argument ensued and the father lashed out, shooting Lake, Roberson said. Lisa Kepler started to run, and was shot at, but the bullet missed, Roberson said.  Lisa Kepler said at a news conference Wednesday that her parents had kicked her out of their home a week ago, and she said was living with Lake at the time of the shooting.  The Keplers are on paid administrative leave.”
