Documents Suggest Close Relationship Between NSA, U.S. Companies

“Newly disclosed National Security Agency documents suggest a closer relationship between American companies and the spy agency than has been previously disclosed.  The documents, published last week by The Intercept, describe ‘contractual relationships’ between the NSA and U.S. companies, as well as the fact that the NSA has ‘under cover’ spies working at or with some U.S. companies.  While not conclusive, the material includes some clear suggestions that at least some American companies are quite willing to help the agency conduct its massive surveillance programs.”

Law Lets I.R.S. Seize Accounts on Suspicion, No Crime Required

“Using a law designed to catch drug traffickers, racketeers and terrorists by tracking their cash, the government has gone after run-of-the-mill business owners and wage earners without so much as an allegation that they have committed serious crimes. The government can take the money without ever filing a criminal complaint, and the owners are left to prove they are innocent.  Many give up.  The I.R.S. is one of several federal agencies that pursue such cases and then refer them to the Justice Department. The Justice Department does not track the total number of cases pursued, the amount of money seized or how many of the cases were related to other crimes.”

“The mainstream news media’s reaction to ‘Kill the Messenger’ has been tepid, perhaps not surprising given that the MSM comes across as the film’s most unsympathetic villain as it crushes journalist Gary Webb for digging up the Contra-cocaine scandal in the mid-1990s after the major newspapers thought they had buried it in the 1980s.  The drug lords show some humanity and even honesty as they describe how they smuggled drugs and shared the proceeds with the Nicaraguan Contra rebels, Reagan’s beloved ‘freedom fighters.’  By contrast, the news executives for the big newspapers come across as soulless careerists determined to maintain their cozy relations with the CIA’s press office.”

Investigation Sought On Obama’s No-Bid Contract for Smallpox Drug [2011]

“A top Senate Democrat has requested an investigation into the Obama administration’s awarding a $433 million no-bid contract to the maker of an experimental smallpox vaccine.  Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., says the five-year contract from the Department of Health and Human Services to Siga Technologies –  a New York company run by a major Democratic donor — raises questions about a conflict of interest and the potential waste of precious taxpayer funds.  In a letter to HHS inspector general Daniel Levinson on Monday, McCaskill expressed worry over the hefty price of the drug (reportedly $255 per dose) because the company had not been not forced to compete for the contract.”

GlaxoSmithKline Starts First Human Trials For Ebola Vaccine In Africa

“The trials are expedited and aim to achieve in months something that generally takes years. Even the trial setup period was just two months long, compared to the six months to one year time period it generally takes to start a vaccine trial. GSK is also starting production of 10,000 doses of its vaccines simultaneously with the trials from the funds provided by UK’s Wellcome Trust and other donor organizations. The rationale behind starting production before trial results is that if the vaccine is successful it can immediately be provided to health workers in the affected regions without any unnecessary delays.”

Federal Program Supplies Surplus Military Gear to Schools

“The Los Angeles Unified School District stocked up on grenade launchers, M16 rifles and even a multi-ton armored vehicle from the program.  In Texas, near the Mexican border, the sprawling Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District has 34,700 students and operates its own SWAT team, thanks in part to military gear it received in recent years from the federal program. The gear included two Humvees and a cargo truck, as well as power generators.  The weapons are given to schools through the 1033 Program, created by Congress in the early 1990s to allow law-enforcement agencies to obtain excess Defense Department supplies, paying only for shipping.”

MRAPs And Bayonets: The Pentagon’s 1033 Program

“The 1033 program is the key source of the most visible, big-ticket, military item being sent to local law enforcement: mine-resistant, ambush-protected vehicles, or MRAPs. Designed to withstand bullets, grenades and roadside bombs on the front lines of war, more than 600 of them have been sent to local law enforcement agencies in almost every state in the U.S., mostly within the past year. Los Angeles County, for example, has nine of these vehicles, six of which were obtained just this past March.  But the program is a conduit for much more than just MRAPs. It turns out that weapons are a relatively small part of the 1033 program.”

Apparently the first step towards personhood is to be really sad on Twitter every year even though we’re now more than a decade beyond 9/11.  Dear brands: it’s okay to forget 9/11. In fact, we insist that you do. Some of us are trying to forget, knowing that a president who campaigned on the idea that he wasn’t the guy who took the United States to war all over the planet is about to take us to war in the same places for the same reasons. Brands are not obligated to have feelings, let alone express grief that’s not really theirs.”

“Behind the rise in seizures is a little-known cottage industry of private police-training firms that teach the techniques of ‘highway interdiction’ to departments across the country.  A private intelligence network known as Black Asphalt Electronic Networking & Notification System enabled police nationwide to share detailed reports about American motorists — criminals and the innocent alike — including their Social Security numbers, addresses and identifying tattoos, as well as hunches about which drivers to stop.  Many of the reports have been funneled to federal agencies and fusion centers as part of the government’s burgeoning law enforcement intelligence systems.”

EU’s Juncker calls for 300 bn euro investment programme

“Designated European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker called on Tuesday for a 300 billion euro ($409 billion) public-private investment programme to revive the European economy, create jobs for the young and stimulate growth over the next three years.  The money should be mobilised from existing budget resources, the European Investment Bank and the private sector, he said.  ‘We need a reindustrialisation of Europe,’ the former Luxembourg prime minister said, promising a work programme in February 2015 for investments in energy, transport and broadband networks and industry clusters.”
