Face recognition pioneer now worried tech enables mass surveillance

“Dr. Joseph Atick was described as ‘one of the pioneer entrepreneurs of modern face recognition’ before the New York Times explained that Atick is now worried about face-matching biometrics enabling ‘mass surveillance’ and ‘basically robbing everyone of their anonymity.  He is reportedly not concerned about the government openly using facial recognition such as to combat identity theft or fraud. There’s no mention of the FBI’s Next Generation Identification (NGI) biometric database, which will reportedly hold 52 million face images by 2015.  Atick used the NameTag app as an example of face-matching technology being taken too far.”

N.S.A. Collecting Millions of Faces From Web Images

“The F.B.I. is developing what it calls its ‘next generation identification’ project to combine its automated fingerprint identification system with facial imagery and other biometric data.  The State Department has what several outside experts say could be the largest facial imagery database in the federal government, storing hundreds of millions of photographs of American passport holders and foreign visa applicants. And the Department of Homeland Security is funding pilot projects at police departments around the country to match suspects against faces in a crowd.  The N.S.A., though, is unique in its ability to match images with huge troves of private communications.”

How the Tea Party Caused a Plane Crash

“Cantor’s defeat rocked shares of Boeing. The aircraft manufacturer is down 4% since Cantor’s loss, and continues to sink lower.  Why Boeing? That’s where this tale of crony capitalism gets interesting.  Cantor was the #1 congressional supporter of the Export-Import Bank (Ex-Im), a little-known federal agency whose ostensible purpose is to encourage US exports. Ex-Im makes or guarantees loans to foreign companies, which use those loans to purchase US products.  Without Cantor’s support, Congress may pull the plug on Ex-Im. That would be good news for taxpayers and the airline industry, but terrible for Boeing.”

Bill Bonner, To the Class of 2014: You’re “Screwed”

Bill-Bonner2

“Government is merely a way one group of people – the insiders – take advantage of other people – the outsiders.  You can call it democracy or dictatorship; it hardly matters. It can be gentle and broadly tolerable… or brutal and widely detested. What makes it a government is it has a monopoly on the use of violence; ultimately, the insiders use it to get what they want. [..]  When everything is rigged, the riggers have the money and the power. Lobbyists, lawyers, accountants, administrators: Whether you want to take a business public… or just build a house… you come face to face with someone who can stop you, with paperwork, legal razzmatazz and nauseating administration.”

Congrats grads! That’ll be $29,400

“The Class of 2012 graduated with an AVERAGE financial hangover of $29,400.  In more expensive parts of the country like the Northeast, four-year degree students owed even more – almost $34,000.  We’re not just talking about a handful of students, either. More than 7 in 10 graduates had at least some debt when they got their degrees.  The growth in debt is far outpacing the growth in income, too, rising at a rate of about 6 percent per year over the past half-decade. All told, student loan debt now totals around $1.1 TRILLION. That’s almost quadruple the level of a decade earlier. It’s now the single biggest category of consumer debt outside of home mortgages.”

China to ditch US consulting firms over suspected espionage

“State-owned Chinese companies will cease to work with US consulting companies like McKinsey and Boston Consulting Group over fears they are spying on behalf of the US government.  US consulting companies McKinsey, BCG, Bain & Company, and Strategy&, formerly Booz & Co., will all be snubbed by state-owned Chinese companies.  The dictate follows the US Justice Department’s indictment of five Chinese military officers it suspects of committing cyber crimes against a number of major US companies.  The US-China fallout came after revelations by Edward Snowden that the US uses economic cyber espionage to spy on international competitors, including China.”

First Chinese military officials charged with stealing US companies’ data

“The US Justice Department indicted five Chinese military officers with stealing data from six US companies and unions on Monday, inaugurating a major escalation of tensions with China over economic spycraft.  Attorney general Eric Holder announced that the US for the first time would seek to bring officials of a foreign government to the US to face charges of infiltrating American computer networks to steal data beneficial to US trade competitors. The Justice Department even went as far as printing ‘wanted’ posters.  The charges come as revelations about the scale of NSA surveillance indicate that at least some US surveillance carries an economic benefit.”

DC Will Tax Non-Participating Insurers To Pay For Obamacare Exchange

“Washington, D.C. will tax all insurers selling policies to district residents to fund the city’s Obamacare exchange.  The plan was proposed by DC Health Link, D.C.’s exchange. The city’s health care law marketplace was allotted $133 million in federal grants to launch, but was expected to be sustainable via a flat tax placed on each insurance plan sold through the marketplace.  When taxing those buying insurance didn’t turn out to be as lucrative as Congress had hoped, D.C. began to look at taxing those selling insurance instead. The exchange reportedly opted to tax all insurers, including those who deliberately chose to stay out of the risky Obamacare exchange, to lower the cost per-insurance company.”

Activists Disrupt Construction of New UK Nuclear Weapons Factory

“The government will vote in 2016 to decide whether to invest in the UK’s Trident nuclear weapon system for another 30 years.  Operated by a consortium of Jacobs Engineering Group, Lockheed Martin and Serco, AWE Burghfield plays an integral part in the final assembly and maintenance of nuclear warheads for use in the Trident system. In 2011 Peter Luff, the then Minister for Defence Equipment, announced £2 billion of spending for redevelopment of the Burghfield and Aldermaston weapons factories. The total spending on Weapons of Mass Destruction in the UK will soar to over £100 Billion should the government take the decision to renew Trident in 2016.”

Europe’s Unraveling Is Not Political but Technological

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“The EU and the euro are facilities of globalism and those globalists that have pursued the project for so long are loath to let it die. It is important, even integral to their plans for worldwide political and socio-economic control. This is [why] Hollande and other leaders do not break away from Brussels’s destructive policies. They don’t because they cannot. They are not, in fact, representing their citizens but are evidently beholden to the same tiny elite that created the EU to begin with.  The increasing decline in EU’s economies bodes ill for the longevity of the EU experiment. It is the Internet itself that is making it difficult for the power elite to control the narrative the way it did in the 20th century.”
