Government Tracking Students from Preschool to Workforce

“The $100 million repository that will catalog all the information is called inBloom, an initiative funded primarily through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and a division of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp.  The Department of Education is in the finishing stages of building a system to share student data with colleges and six other state agencies—a program known as ‘P-20.’ Some of the other agencies that may have access to the data by 2015 include the Department of Labor, Health and Taxation and Finance, and the offices of Technology and Children and Family Services.  In addition to money from the Gates Foundation, the DOE has received $40 million from state and federal agencies.”

Bitcoin Exec Arrested For Not Spying Enthusiastically Enough

“The Post story includes this chilling little tidbit: ‘Bharara’s statement suggests that Bitcoin exchange services that color within the lines of U.S. law—collecting information about their customers and reporting evidence of illegal transactions to the authorities—don’t need to worry about running afoul of money laundering laws.’  This is straight-up extortion, essentially saying that BTC is fine so long as there is no anonymity associated with it. If the feds can weaken it further—say, below the level of anonymity offered by a sack of dollar bills—then all that’s left is to decree that it build a flexible inflation rate to be monitored by the Open Market Committee of the Federal Reserve.”

UK porn filter blocks League of Legends update for ‘sex’ in file name

“The anti-pornography firewall run by the UK’s four top internet providers has blocked the latest League of Legends update because it happens to contain the letters ‘s,’ ‘e’ and ‘x’ in a row in two of its file names, The Guardian reports. The filter dings the following two files, forcing the update to fail with a ‘file not found’ error (emphasis added): XerathMageChainsExtended.luaobj VarusExpirationTimer.luaobj.  The Guardian says that the only recourse for those affected is to contact their internet providers and switch off the filter. The firewall is a new program and this problem should be contained to anyone who has signed up for a new ISP this month only.”

Federal security forces at the Super Bowl

“Super Bowl XLVIII has been declared a level one national security event. Part of that security is to examine every item that is being brought in for Sunday’s big game.  U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents will work around the clock to X-ray every delivery truck and any other vehicle authorized to enter the MetLife Stadium complex for anything suspicious.  Agents will be looking for smugglers, narcotics, terror activity, and more potential threats.  Throughout Super Bowl week, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security will use HCV Mobile Scanning trucks to examine vehicles.  Agents will monitor computer screens to scan anything and everything commercial vehicles will bring in.”

Authorities Want Remote Access To Californians’ Home CCTV Footage

“A rather Orwellian council proposal in California would see police able to remotely access the feeds from home security cameras in San Jose.  The idea, forwarded by City Councilman Sam Liccardo, calls for citizens to volunteer their own CCTV systems, registering them with local law enforcement, so police can monitor whatever the cameras are trained on.  The idea came about after local business owners volunteered CCTV footage following a series of arson crimes in a downtown district. San Jose’s independent police auditor, retired judge LaDoris Cordell, lauded the idea, calling it a logical step and stating ‘You tend to behave when the cameras are on you.'”
