$10m NSA contract with security firm RSA led to encryption backdoor

“Documents leaked by the former NSA contractor Edward Snowden show that the NSA created and promulgated a flawed formula for generating random numbers, to create a ‘back door’ in encryption products, the New York Times reported in September. Reuters later reported that RSA became the most important distributor of that formula by rolling it into a software tool called Bsafe that is used to enhance security in personal computers and many other products.  Undisclosed until now was that RSA received $10m in a deal that set the NSA formula as the preferred, or default, method for number generation in the BSafe software, according to two sources familiar with the contract.”

“This Reuters article is proposing that ‘firms automatically enroll employees in a pension account and put 8 percent of their salary into it.’ This is not so different than current models that incentivize employees to save by matching donations to pension plans.  But it is different, nonetheless, as the level of coercion has been elevated. The clear message being sent is that Western governments should mandate the stance private corporations should take with their employees.  In the modern era, this is how tyranny arrives. It is advanced step by logical step. And most people simply don’t have the time or discipline to identify the logical fallacies that accompany it.”

“We cannot trust” Intel and Via’s chip-based crypto: FreeBSD developers

“The revelations are having a direct effect on the way FreeBSD will use hardware-based random number generators to seed the data used to ensure cryptographic systems can’t be easily broken by adversaries. Specifically, ‘RDRAND’ and ‘Padlock’—RNGs provided by Intel and Via respectively—will no longer be the sources FreeBSD uses to directly feed random numbers into the /dev/random engine used to generate random data in Unix-based operating systems. Instead, it will be possible to use the pseudo random output of RDRAND and Padlock to seed /dev/random only after it has passed through a separate RNG algorithm known as ‘Yarrow.'”

As well there exist strict criteria by which such an article can be withdrawn after publication. The Journal of Food and Chemical Toxicology has apparently decided to violate those procedures, announcing it is retracting a long-term study on the toxic effects of Monsanto Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs)—GMO Maize it published a year ago. The bizarre reports come only six months after Elsevier created a special new position, Associate Editor for Biotechnology (i.e. GMO), and filled it with a former Monsanto employee.”

Short-term fix eyed for another problem with U.S. healthcare website

“The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has not yet finished building the part of the website that would transfer billions of dollars in subsidies for plan premiums and cost-sharing payments to insurance companies.  The administration is planning a ‘workaround’ for payments, said Daniel Durham, vice president for policy and regulatory affairs at America’s Health Insurance Plans.  Health plans will estimate how much they are owed, and submit that estimate to the government. Once the system is built, the government and insurers can reconcile the payments made with the plan data to ‘true up’ payments, he said.”
