“Smart Meters are a financial coup for Big Energy. This is why we are witnessing – and now catching on film – criminal acts of vandalism, breaking & entering and trespass by energy firms trying to install their next-generation ‘cash machines’ in the homes of customers. When companies are prepared to treat the properties of their customers with this much contempt, the extent to which sensitive personal data will be cared for is in little doubt.”

Snowden Leak: U.S. Paying Contractors Ten Times as Much as Bureaucrats

“While contractors represent fewer than 20 percent of the workforce, 70 percent of the intelligence budget goes to them, according to a figure from the U.S. Director of National Intelligence Agency (DNI) at a Colorado sponsored by the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA). That rare peek behind the veil is likely still relatively accurate. Traditionally the lion’s share of this money has gone to Northrop Grumman Corp. (NOC), Honeywell Int’l Inc. (HON) (via is Science Applications Int’l Corp. subsidiary), Raytheon Comp. (RTN), Lockheed Martin Corp. (LMT), and Edward Snowden’s former firm Booz Allen Hamilton Holding Comp. (BAH).”
Hey Iraqis: How’s that “Liberation” Stuff Workin’ Out For Ya?
“Just what ‘liberation’ meant to Rummy, Dummy and Scummy can be seen from the agenda Paul Bremer implemented as head of the Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA) in Iraq. Bremer’s CPA was a classic ‘night watchman state.’ Remember all those priceless historical treasures the looters ‘liberated’ from the National Museum while the U.S. looked the other way? With Night Watchman Bremer’s go-ahead, global corporate looters gave the Iraqi economy just as thorough a ransacking. On top of everything else, Bremer appointed a whole slew of ministerial officials to five-year terms that would override any later decisions by an independent government.”
Murray Rothbard: Fighting for Oil? [1990]

“The U.S., by its embargo, blockade, and continuing threats of war, has already managed to raise the price of crude to $40 a barrel! In fact, it would be more plausible to suppose that the aim of the massive Bush intervention has been to raise the price of oil, not to lower it. And considering Mr. Bush’s vice presidential visit to Saudi Arabia specifically to urge them to raise prices, his long-time connections with Texas oil and with Big Oil generally, as well as Texas’s slump in recent years, this hunch begins to look all too credible.”
Glenn Greenwald: David Frum, the Iraq war and oil

“Wars rarely have one clear and singular purpose, and the Iraq War in particular was driven by different agendas prioritized by different factions. To say it was fought exclusively due to oil is an oversimplification. But the fact that oil is a major factor in every Western military action in the Middle East is so self-evident that it’s astonishing that it’s even considered debatable, let alone some fringe and edgy idea. Yet few claims were more stigmatized in the run-up to the Iraq War, and after, than the view that oil was a substantial factor. In 2006, George Bush instructed us that there was a ‘responsible’ way to criticize the US war effort in Iraq, and an ‘irresponsible’ way to do so, and he helpfully defined the boundaries.”

The Real Reason for the Iraq War

“Like most lefty journalists, I assumed that George Bush and Tony Blair invaded Iraq to buy up its oil fields, cheap and at gun-point, and cart off the oil. We thought we knew the neo-cons true casus belli: Blood for oil. But the invasion was not about ‘blood for oil’, but something far more sinister: blood for no oil. War to keep supply tight and send prices skyward. Oil men, whether James Baker or George Bush or Dick Cheney, are not in the business of producing oil. They are in the business of producing profits. And they’ve succeeded. Iraq, capable of producing six to 12 million barrels of oil a day, still exports well under its old OPEC quota of three million barrels.”

Cop Sues Over DC Speed Camera Program

“Sergeant Mark Robinson has spent 23 years on the force, with five years of experience working on the automated traffic enforcement unit. Earlier this year, Robinson went public to expose how one of the city’s most profitable cameras at the Third Street Tunnel was set to the wrong speed. Robinson’s lawsuit alleges the camera program manager, Lisa Sutter, set up speed cameras improperly, voided speed camera tickets for friends, misappropriated $25,000 in government funds and ‘had an improper relationship with a non-profit organization.’ After he filed a formal complaint, Sutter lowered the scores on Robinson’s performance evaluation and rescinded his supervisory authority in the camera program.”
Unwanted Exotics

“If the definition of insanity is, indeed, repeating the same action over and over and over – and expecting a different result – then the car industry is palpably insane. No, wait. I am not being fair. The car industry is not insane. It is merely being puppeteered – dancing on strings, the strings controlled by someone else. The object of this exercise is not to find a way to reduce the cost of driving but rather to increase it. California – the biggest single market for cars in the U.S. – along with nine others – has set quotas for Unwanted Exotics. Fifteen percent of all cars sold in these states must be of the electrified variety by 2025. This a great deal more than the 80-odd electric Fits Honda has sold so far.”
Deloitte Rep. Warns China, Hong Kong To Sign FATCA Agreement

“‘If the BVI and Caymans comply with the FATCA [Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act], this speaks volumes about the importance of this legislation to the world at large, let alone China and Hong Kong,’ said Patrick Yip, deputy national mergers and acquisitions leader at Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu. ‘China and Hong Kong financial firms that think by putting assets and income into BVI and Cayman companies they can avoid the reach of FATCA, they need to think again.’ Although a US law, FATCA applies worldwide to every financial institution that receives payments from US sources. The mainland and Hong Kong should sign the agreements with the US to soothe their worries, he urged.”

Ron Paul: Middle of the Road in Healthcare Leads to Socialism
“Beginning in the 1940s, government policies distorted the health care market, causing prices to rise and denying many Americans access to quality care. Congress reacted to the problems caused by their prior interventions with new interventions, such as the HMO Act, ERISA, EMTLA, and various federal entitlement programs. Each new federal intervention not only failed to fix the problems it was supposedly created to solve, it created new problems, leading to calls for even more new federal interventions. This process culminated in 2010. Contrary to the claims of some of its opponents, Obamacare is not socialized medicine. It is corporatized medicine.”
