Bo and Tom Saxbe are the brothers behind the ‘wizard-themed fantasy cheese palace on wheels,’ which has geek written all over it with oblique references to George R. R. Martin and Harry Potter.  But here’s the real geek factor: As of last week, the food truck is accepting payment with Bitcoin, the decentralized digital currency.”

“From among the jungles and rice paddies of central Bali, Indonesia, a website popped up last week selling freshly roasted coffee beans from local producers. Technology and travelers have made direct-from-source coffee popular for a while now, but this operation has a unique point: it will trade beans only for bitcoin.  The business is The Roast Station Project and leading it is JB Allen, aka the ‘Java Nomad’.  Allen is one of a growing number of laptop-powered entrepreneurs to make a home, or at least a string of temporary bases, in Southeast Asia. In 2010s parlance, they’re digital nomads, Lifestyle Businesspeople, Tropical MBAs or just location-independent CEOs.”

There is no denying that Honestbeef has found its niche in the market, providing ethical, additive-free beef to primarily metropolitan consumers.  The business started after the Australian drought of 2003 when the couple were living in Canberra, fed up with paying sky-high prices for poor-quality beef.”

Industrial hemp legalized in California

“Farmers in California may finally begin growing industrial hemp under a new law signed Wednesday by Gov. Jerry Brown.  Lawmakers have been discussing the proposal since 1999 to allow approved residents to grow hemp for industrial purposes by reclassifying the plant as a fiber or oilseed crop.  The law defines the crop as the nonpsychoactive types of the Cannabis sativa plant containing no more than 3/10 of 1 percent of THC, the psychoactive chemical in marijuana.  Supporters of the bill say hemp is a $500 million industry in California and is growing by 10 percent annually.”

Beef Prices Set New Record Highs

“Retail beef prices rose nearly 4¢ in August to reach $5.394/lb, a record high, reports Beef Magazine. This should be no problem, though, if you switch to lower priced goods as beef climbs, as government theorizes consumers do as part of its chained-inflation index. For example, peanut butter prices are down 5.7% over the last 12 months, according to the BLS.  So if you switch from steak to peanut butter sandwiches, you won’t notice any increase in the cost of eating.”

Intel turns wine into electricity to power mobile devices

“Demonstrating what is probably the perfect solution for energy conscious winos out there, an Intel Labs researcher talked through the project on stage alongside Bell, showing off a low-power processor and an accelerometer that were powered by a glass of wine. The researcher – we didn’t catch his full name – boasted that the computing solutions being worked on in Intel Labs are so low in power that in the future we’ll be able to ‘power them by the heat of our skin, or the ambilight in the room’, or ‘something a little more entertaining’, he added, pointing at the wine glass hooked up to the accelerometer.”

Tufts University: Study promoting GMO ‘golden rice’ violated ethics rules

“Tufts University researchers revealed Tuesday that a member of their team violated ethics rules in a study designed to measure the nutritional efficacy of so-called ‘golden rice,’ genetically modified rice with the nutrient beta carotene added. No one on Tang’s team saw fit to inform the parents of the 24 children from Hunan province, ages 6 to 8, that the children were eating gene-modified food. Chinese journalists found an email to the research team from a Chinese government official urging scientists not to speak openly of genetic modification, a subject deemed ‘too sensitive’ to discuss with the families.”

Is anyone using it? ‘Plenty,’ Moloney said. ‘The last two animals we sent off, we had [those] two pay by Bitcoin, and we’ve got a third waiting. We’re probably getting 10 to almost 20 percent of our customers paying by Bitcoin now.’ Now, there’s nothing particularly high-tech about Honest Beef. There’s a website and Bitcoin, sure, but the rest is just telephones and trucks, emails and evisceration.”
