Mexico ships first load of premium tequila to China

“The shipment consisted of more than 70,000 bottles of the highest quality tequila, with a total value of more than $400,000, according to the Tequila Regulatory Council (CRT). ‘It’s the beginning of a great opportunity for the development, expansion and positioning of our national drink, tequila, to conquer this great market,’ CRT head Miguel Angel Dominguez said during a speech at the event in the western Jalisco state.  He added that the Chinese market ‘last year alone accounted for 38 percent of the consumption of alcoholic beverages worldwide.’  Only recently was a ban on 100 percent blue agave lifted, following a visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping in June.”

Why Is Chicken More Expensive? Media Blames McDonald’s

“In late 2011, the Georgia dock wholesale price of chicken wings started rising from 90¢ to more than $2 per pound earlier this year, an increase that got passed along at the supermarket. Prices have since fallen to about $1.46 per pound. Steyan believes it will be hard for McDonald’s to make wings a permanent menu item, as the company may have underestimated its own impact on the wing market. It’s not just wings, either. The wholesale price of boneless chicken breast has climbed 24 percent since March, an increase Sanderson Farms Chief Executive Joe Sanderson Jr. attributes to rising demand from fast-food restaurants. McDonald’s, for instance, introduced the McWrap this spring.”

Sacre bleu! Poor weather ruins 2013 wine grape harvest in France

“France is facing one of its poorest wine grape harvests in four decades due to a cold and rainy spring and severe hail storms. The 2013 harvest is expected to reach just 43.5 millions hectolitres — well below the 10-year average of 45.4 million.  That would make the 2013 harvest one of the worst in 40 years and only a slight improvement on last year’s record low harvest of 41.4 million.  Jerome Despey, head of FranceAgriMer’s viticulture section, said cool temperatures and excessive rains contributed to a particularly poor harvest, while some vineyard owners in famed wine regions like Bordeaux and Burgundy saw their harvests nearly wiped out by hail.”

Officials now say New Zealand milk scare was a false alarm

“A botulism scare that sparked global recalls of Fonterra milk products was a false alarm and there was never any danger to consumers, New Zealand officials said on Wednesday after new tests. The crisis led to infant formula being taken off shelves from China to Saudi Arabia earlier this month and damaged New Zealand’s ‘clean, green’ reputation in key Asian markets. The dairy industry accounts for about a quarter of New Zealand’s exports and ministry acting director-general Scott Gallacher said officials had been right to issue a public warning early.”

Kentucky students to first lady Michelle Obama: Your food ‘tastes like vomit’

“Jack Miniard, the school district’s director of school and community nutrition, was on hand to explain that the federal government now governs both food choices and portion sizes. Under the National School Lunch Program, participating schools must provide lunches — including free or reduced price lunches — with minimum amounts of fresh fruits, fresh vegetables and whole grains. There’s a calorie cap: 850 for high school lunches, 700 for middle schools and a mere 650 calories for kids in elementary school. Students can only have one serving of meat or other protein. However, rich kids can buy a second portion each day on their own dime.”

Small farmers say new federal regulations could halt local food trend

“As the local food movement gains steam, northern New England farmers are steaming mad about proposed regulations they fear will leave them unable to meet growing consumer demand for their produce. Andre Cantelmo of Heron Pond Farm in South Hampton helps run Eastman’s Corner, a foundation dedicated to making local farms an economically and environmentally sustainable, integral part of the community. The group is preparing to break ground on a large food distribution and preservation center, but uncertainty over looming food safety rules could halt that progress, he said.”

State Threatens to Take Baby Over Homemade Goat Milk Formula

“Alorah Gellerson of Brooklin, Maine made the mistake of telling her doctor about the homemade goat milk formula she proudly and carefully makes for her healthy, happy, three-month old son Carson.  The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) quickly responded when the doctor reported Alorah and that’s when things got messy. The state came in and threatened to take Carson away and put him in foster care unless Alorah followed DHHS orders to go and have the baby examined by a doctor.  Unbelievably, DHHS also mandated an overnight hospital stay and a switch back to store bought GMO commercial formula.”

4 Year Old’s Veggie Garden Must Go, Says USDA Subcontractor

“With each passing day, it seems the United States of America, ‘Land of the Free and Home of the Brave’ is becoming more and more like the Communist Russia I learned about in elementary school where people weren’t allowed to grow their own food unless the State ‘allowed’ it.  In this latest crackdown on citizens simply trying to provide for themselves using the most basic of skills – gardening – the USDA’s Rural Development Agency is forbidding Rosie, an industrious 4-year old girl in South Dakota from using a small, unused area outside her subsidized housing unit to grow green vegetables.”

Air Force Bans Greek Yogurt With Hemp Seeds Over Anti-Drug Policy Concerns

“The Air Force warned personnel over the weekend to steer clear of a specific flavor of Chobani Greek yogurt that includes hemp seeds. Hemp contains trace amounts of THC, the psychoactive ingredient also found in marijuana, classified alongside heroin and LSD as a Schedule I drug under federal law. The Air Force, as part of its anti-drug policy, added hemp seed oil products and hemp seed to a list of forbidden substances in 1999, over concerns that they could confuse the results of drug tests regularly given to service members. Chobani’s Blueberry Power Flip is the latest victim of that prohibition. The Air Force made clear that yogurt flavors without hemp were still fine to eat.”
