Ohio police chief hospitalized after eating ‘cannabis cake’

“An Easter morning craving turned into a cause for concern for the chief of police in Lawrenceville, Ohio, after the cake he ate turned out to be laced with cannabis oil.  Burkemeyer said he ate the entire cake on March 31 after seeing it on his kitchen counter. But when he began feeling ill, he told the station, he drove to his station for help. ‘I don’t remember much of the drive here, even though it’s just a few blocks,’ he said. The cake was allegedly brought to the house by a friend’s boyfriend. WBNS reported that the Sheriff’s office for Hocking County, Ohio, is determining whether to charge the man with assault and ‘corrupting another with drugs.'”

“In October 2012, the ABA Journal reported on the filing of a patent for a ‘Vegas Strip Steak.’ This particular cut of beef was apparently unknown until it was discovered by an Oklahoma State University meat specialist. While technically ‘unknown,’ the case of the Vegas Strip is really a case of something being undervalued. Surely, experienced butchers, without any specialized knowledge contained in the patent, will know where to find this new cut of beef merely by hearing about it. If the patent is granted, however, anyone who wishes to extract the Vegas Strip from a cow carcass will be legally required to obtain a license from the patent holder.”

Candy maker Hershey pays $4 million for price-fixing

“US candy maker Hershey on Friday pleaded guilty to participating in a chocolate price-fixing scheme and paid a CAN$4 million (US$4.2 million) fine.  The company entered the plea at the Ontario Superior Court and, according to the Competition Bureau of Canada, received lenient treatment in exchange for its cooperation in an antitrust investigation.  Earlier this month, Canadian authorities also charged Nestle, Mars and a network of independent wholesale distributors in the case after a whistle-blower tipped authorities to the scheme. The alleged price-fixing involved popular brands such as Kit Kat, Coffee Crisp, Aero, Twix, Snickers, Bounty and M&Ms.”

Belarus and Russia in a ‘chocolate war’ against Ukraine

“Belarus will not allow confectionery manufactured by Roshen to cross its territory. That’s after the Russian sanitary services banned the confectioners products after the toxic hydrocarbon benzopyrene was found in Roshen milk chocolate. Roshen could stand to lose $200mn from the ‘chocolate war’ with Russia according to Oleksandr Sokolov, director of analytics at Pro-Consulting talking to Ukrinform.  Kazakhstan, the third party to the Customs Union with Russia and Belarus, has so far not found any signs of benzopyrene in Roshen products. On Saturday Tajikistan said it had found no impurity in Roshen confectionary products imported into the country.”

Manufacturing of Zeppelins temporarily shut down sausage makers in World War I

“According to a new documentary, the quantity of cow intestines used in manufacturing the airships was so enormous – and the military appetite for the dirigibles so strong – that the making of sausages was temporarily outlawed in Germany and allied or occupied parts of Austria, Poland and northern France. With the guts from more than 250,000 cows needed to produce the bags that held the hydrogen gas in each Zeppelin, the German war machine had to choose between long-range bombing and wurst. It chose the former.”

Some people sell regular coffee beans and claim they are the famous civet coffee. Others adulterate Kopi Luwak beans with regular coffee beans, hoping drinkers won’t notice the inferior quality. Scientists have developed a test that checks for the unique chemical fingerprint on Kopi Luwak.”

One chunk of the market is taking off for other reasons. The Middle East now accounts for almost a third of the worldwide sales by volume of non-alcoholic beer. In 2012 Iranians drank nearly four times as much of it as they did in 2007. It is popular in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, where alcohol is either wholly or partially banned. Partly this is for religious reasons. But it also taps into growing consumer aspirations. As a statement of a globalised lifestyle beer, even if non-alcoholic, may be more potent than Coca-Cola.”

German beer brewers in decades-long price fixing scandal

“Bosses of large breweries in the country have admitted to investigators that a number of firms arranged to raise prices of their premium beer brands, according to reports in German magazine Focus.  Until now, it was believed the price-fixing arrangements spanned only a two-year period from 2006 to 2008.  Documents seen by Focus reveal that during an interrogation in January, Volker Kuhl, head of the Veltins brewery, said large breweries would pass the price-rising agreements along to smaller producers. The companies involved now face fines in the hundreds of millions of euros, Focus reported.”
