Foodflation – Since QE3, Breakfast Is Up Over 24%

“Having pointed out the ‘surges’ in the cost of your 4th of July burger at the behest of Greenspan and Bernanke, we thought a reflection on the soaring costs of ‘the most important meal of the day’ were in order. As the following chart illustrates in words and pictures even a PhD Fed economist or CNBC pretend-economist could understand – food-flation is here from breakfast through dinner (no matter how many iPads we try and eat).”

Hapifork ‘smart fork’ review: eat slower to eat better

“A 2010 study published in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism found that people who were given identical meals released more hormones that made them feel full when they ate the meal in 30 minutes rather than five. The Hapifork, the surprise darling of CES 2013, promises a quick and intelligent way to help you eat more slowly. (It also says it will help you ‘eat healthier,’ ‘lose weight,’ and ‘cut calories.’) The fork passively monitors how fast you eat, vibrating and lighting up to let you know when you take too many bites too quickly. It claims to be the answer to all your bad eating habits, with one simple tweak.”

How many bites do YOU take per day? New device helps you keep track

Dieters already track calories and steps, and now researchers have developed a device that they can wear on their wrists to count the number of bites they take of their food. Researchers at South Carolina’s Clemson University say that The Bite Monitor measures subtle wrist motions to detect bites with what they claim is 90per cent accuracy – and helps users get to the ‘optimum’ 100.  ‘It’s a little bit like a pedometer for your mouth,’ Eric Muth, a psychology professor who created the device with computer-engineering professor Adam Hoover, told The Wall Street Journal.   The concept will soon be tested in a study funded by the National Institutes of Health.”

Vessyl is the smart cup that knows exactly what you’re drinking

“Vessyl can tell the difference between strong and weak coffee, Lee says, noting caffeine disparities. It can even measure the sugar, protein, calories, fat, and caffeine inside any beverage you pour into it, mass-produced or homemade. As you go about your day, the device tracks how much you’re drinking, and when you tilt Vessyl to its back, it displays a bright blue line that rises and falls to indicate your hydration level.  Even sleek apps like Up Coffee, which tracks your caffeine consumption, require you to input your consumption manually drink by drink. The big idea behind Vessyl is to provide transparency, automatically, about how terrible most of our drinking habits are.”

Rising Hops Prices Make Craft Brewers Jumpy

“The popularity of hopped-up beers has led to a serious hops shortage in the U.S. That shortage drove the average price for all hops to $3.59 a pound in 2013, up from $1.88 in 2004.  Craft beer’s market share cracked 5% in 2011, and by 2012 it hit 7.8%.  The greater demand for hops has come amid a decline in supply from Oregon, Washington and Idaho, the nation’s top hop-growing states. This was thanks to a global hops glut a few years ago that spurred growers to pull back at what turned out to be exactly the wrong time.  Other states could fill this vacuum.  New York, for instance, led the U.S. in hop cultivation until a 19th-century blight and Prohibition killed the industry.”

U.S. government waging war on school bake sales?

“The homemade brownies, cupcakes and Rice Krispies treats that parents prepare for these fundraisers will come under extra scrutiny because of new federal regulations that took effect July 1.  The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 puts the USDA in charge of monitoring whether schools meet the new healthy meal standards. The USDA also has the authority to set nutritional standards for all foods regularly sold in schools during the school day, including vending machines, the ‘a la carte’ lunch lines, school stores and the traditional K-12 bake sale.  More bake sales are offering processed, pre-packaged goods because the nutritional contents are clearly labeled.”

Jeffrey Tucker: Life Without the McDouble

20121129_JeffreyTuckeravatar1

“That we were born now and live now to enjoy the massive beneficence of the struggle of thousands of years to bring us things like the tomato, beef, cheese, bread, and to wrap it all up in a tiny package and make that available to us for a dollar in nearly every city in the world, that this comes to us with no work on our part, is a gigantic privilege afforded us by virtue of accident or providence (depending on your religious views). To whatever force you attribute your good fortune, we should recognize it as such.  The McDouble does not appear in nature. That we can laugh at it, put it down, sneer at it, and even denounce the company that brings it to us is a wonderful privilege of the ungrateful.”

Russia takes aim at McDonald’s burgers as U.S. ties worsen

“McDonald’s burgers and shakes may become the latest victims of worsening ties between Moscow and Washington after a Russian consumer watchdog agency accused the U.S. chain of sanitary violations.  McDonald’s Corp , which opened its first Russian restaurant in Moscow in 1990, became an iconic symbol of flourishing American capitalism during the fall of the Soviet Union.  But its Golden Arches may be in the Kremlin’s crosshairs as ties between Moscow and Washington have fallen to their lowest point since the end of the Cold War with consecutive rounds of U.S. sanctions over Russia’s role in the Ukraine crisis.”

Russia to block US agricultural imports

“Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday hit back hard against countries that have imposed sanctions over the Ukraine crisis, ordering trade cuts that an official said would include a ban on all imports of agricultural products from the United States.  White House spokeswoman Laura Lucas Magnuson decried the move, saying ‘Retaliating against Western companies or countries will deepen Russia’s international isolation, causing further damage to its own economy.’  Russia last week banned the import of apples and some other fruits from Poland, saying this was because of sanitary concerns.”

World’s Largest LED Hydroponic Farm Used to Be a Sony Factory

“This enormous indoor lettuce farm for example—the largest of its kind in the world—produces 10,000 heads a day in less space than a single American football field and could signal a sea change in how we get our greens.  This 25,000 square foot (roughly half a football field) indoor farm actually used to be a Sony semiconductor plant in Japan’s Miyagi Prefecture. That is, until plant physiologist Shigeharu Shimamura set about converting it into the world’s largest indoor farm illuminated by LED.  Using LED bulbs developed by GE, designed to produce the optimal wavelength of light that plants crave, Shimamura is able to accelerate plant growth by 250 percent.”
