Drinking diet soda may trim your lifespan; linked to heart disease

“This is not the first study to report such findings. A 2012 study by French researchers published in ‘The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition’ found a strong correlation between diet drinks and increased risk of Type 2 diabetes. Women who drink ‘light’ beverages tend to consume 43% more than women who drink normal sugary drinks, it concluded. What’s more, when consumed in equal quantities, artificially sweetened drinks were associated with an increased risk of developing diabetes.  The global market for artificial sweeteners is projected to reach $1.68 billion by 2018 from $1.39 billion in 2012, according to market research group Global Industry Analysts.”

Canola Oil: Good or Bad?

“Back in the day, an oil called rapeseed oil was often used for industrial purposes.  It was cheap to produce, but people couldn’t eat it because it contained some unfavorable substances.  A bunch of Canadian scientists wanted to turn rapeseed oil into an edible oil, so they used selective breeding techniques to ‘create’ seeds that contained less of these harmful, bitter substances.  This is how canola was born… but ‘Canola’ is a marketing term. It stands for Canadian Oil (some believe it stands for Canada Oil, Low Acid).  Today, about 90% of the world’s canola crop is genetically modified.  This short video shows how canola oil is made. I recommend you watch it.”

World Health Organization: Daily sugar intake ‘should be halved’

“People will be advised to halve the amount of sugar in their diet, under new World Health Organization guidance.  The recommended sugar intake will stay at below 10% of total calorie intake a day, with 5% the target, says the WHO.  The suggested limits apply to all sugars added to food, as well as sugar naturally present in honey, syrups, fruit juices and fruit concentrates.  UK campaigners say it is a ‘tragedy’ that the WHO has taken 10 years to think about changing its advice.  The recommendation that sugar should account for no more than 10% of the calories in the diet, was passed in 2002.  It works out at about 50g a day for an adult of normal weight, said the WHO.”

Sugar ‘could be addictive’; UK health czar urges 20% tax

“Sugar could be addictive and the government may need to introduce a tax on it in order to combat obesity, England’s chief medical officer said on Tuesday.  Dame Sally Davies made the comments to the Commons health select committee a day ahead of an announcement from the World Health Organisation on new proposed limits for sugar consumption.  UK groups such as the Children’s Food Campaign have been lobbying for a tax on sugar in food and drinks. Doctors also supported the call for a 20% tax on sugary drinks in a report from the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges in February.”

EU To Ban U.S. Cheese From Using Names Like ‘Feta’ and ‘Parmesan’

“The EU wants to ban the use of European names for American-made cheeses as they cut into the sales and identity of the original, European cheeses. The EU argues that ‘Parmesan’ should be used only for cheeses made in Parma, Italy. And while ‘feta’ isn’t a place in Greece, the cheese is so uniquely tied to a Greek identity that the EU argues only cheese from that country should be distinguished with the name.  Naturally, U.S. dairy producers, cheesemakers and food companies who participate in the $4 billion industry are fighting the EU’s attempts to clamp down on its regional cheeses as they believe the U.S. popularized them.”

A low saturated fat diet ‘will not prevent heart disease or prolong life’

“Health professionals recommend following a diet low in saturated fat. But a leading US cardiovascular scientist says that adopting such a diet does not curb heart disease or prolong life.  In an editorial recently published in the BMJ journal Open Heart, Dr. James DiNicolantonio says the consumption of saturated fat was first criticized back in the 1950s.  But Dr. DiNicolantonio says the findings of this research were flawed. He notes that the study author reached his conclusion using data from only six countries, choosing to exclude data from 16 countries that failed to fit his hypothesis. However, Dr. DiNicolantonio says this data ‘led us down the wrong ‘dietary road’ for decades to follow.'”

Bitcoins and bars: Chicagoans getting in on virtual currency

“About 40 people gathered on a sub-zero day in early January to eat pizza and drink beer at Atlas Brewery in Lincoln Park. Most of them left without paying a dime.  It was a trial run for the brewery to accept Bitcoin, a digital currency that’s an alternative to cash and credit. At the end of the night, the final tab for food and beer came out to 0.5960 bitcoin (or BTC, the standard abbreviation for bitcoin), the equivalent of about $500 cash given the exchange rate at the time. It was an event organized by Jonathan Solomon, a 28-year-old entrepreneur who has joined the ranks of Bitcoin advocates trying to cash in on the new digital currency.”

Coca-Capitulation

“‘In an entirely voluntary move,’ Coca-Cola announced that it would ‘cease all worldwide marketing efforts to children under 12, put calorie counts on all packaging and labeling and ensure that low-calorie and no-calorie … beverages are available in every nation on earth where Coca-Cola is sold.’  The political assault on Coca-Cola is usually described in terms of health paladins using power to restrain an unscrupulous corporation. Whatever the truth of that narrative, food politics is also a brutal attack upon consumers who end up forcibly being ‘protected’ from their own choices.”

GM soy and corn feed turns pig stomachs to mush

“If you have stomach problems or gastrointestinal problems, a new study led by Dr. Judy Carman may help explain why: pigs fed a diet of genetically engineered soy and corn showed a 267% increase in severe stomach inflammation compared to those fed non-GMO diets. In males, the difference was even more pronounced: a 400% increase. (For the record, most autistic children are males, and nearly all of them have severe intestinal inflammation.)  The study was conducted on 168 young pigs on an authentic farm environment and was carried out over a 23-week period by eight researchers across Australia and the USA.”

California Chefs, Bartenders Now Forced To Wear Gloves

“Chefs and bartenders in California are aghast over a new law that prevents them from touching the food they will serve to customers. The new law, which took effect on January 1, is part of the California Retail Food Code.  State food handling regulations previously required foodservice employees to ‘minimize bare hand and arm contact with non-prepackaged food that is in a ready-to-eat-form[.]’  The new law ‘instead requires food employees to minimize bard (sic) hand and arm contact with exposed food that is not in a ready-to-eat form.’ The ‘ready-to-eat’ terminology means ‘food that is edible without additional preparation to achieve food safety.'”
