New law forces Little League chapter to pay for concession stand permit

“The Genesee County health department is requiring the Batavia Little League to get a permit to operate its concession stand.  The Little League tells us it can’t afford it. It all comes down to a new law requiring any organization that serves food to have a permit. We spoke with the vice president of the Batavia Little League. The Batavia Little League says it was thrown a ‘curveball.’ The Genesee County health department is requiring the league to get a permit to continue selling food.  ‘It’s no different than the little six-year-old kid having a lemonade stand,’ says Reinhart. ‘Are they going to go and kick those kid’s stands down and ask them for $175?'”

Bill Bonner: To the Class of 2015, Part 2

“We — your parents — enjoyed an economic expansion that began when we were born and continued, with only short interruptions, until we retired. We got out of school with little or no student debt. We could start businesses with generally few impediments. We could borrow money to fund our businesses and our lives. We could hire, fire, switch jobs…buy and sell houses…move from place to place… We were freer…and richer…than you will be…unless you can wipe the slate clean of our debts, our foolish wars and dumbbell programs, and our attempts to hold back the future and prevent you from living rich, full, free lives of your own.”

Australian public programming questions value of reading to children

“‘Evidence shows that the difference between those who get bedtime stories and those who don’t — the difference in their life chances — is bigger than the difference between those who get elite private schooling and those that don’t,’ British academic Adam Swift told ABC presenter Joe Gelonesi.  Swift said parents should be mindful of the advantage provided by bedtime reading.  ‘I don’t think parents reading their children bedtime stories should constantly have in their minds the way that they are unfairly disadvantaging other people’s children, but I think they should have that thought occasionally,’ he said.”

Common Sense: Police State Blues

“No reason anymore to even feign surprise at today’s police state insanities.  At Townhall yesterday, I bemoaned the six-hour kidnapping of a 10-year-old Maryland boy and his 6-year-old sister for the terrible crime of peacefully walking home from a public park.  The children were grabbed just a couple blocks from their home . . . by police, who held them for over two hours before handing them to Montgomery County Child Protective Services.  It was hours before anyone contacted the panicked parents.  There’s no law prohibiting kids from walking down a public street, but bureaucrats are threatening this poor family over just that.”

It’s time to talk about the role of police in our public schools

“Possession of nicotine or a tobacco product by a minor is, by all accounts, a minor infraction. In Ohio, it carries the penalty of a $100 fine, having to attend a tobacco education program, or both.  Or, as they used to do in my high school, authorities would just take it away from you. Case closed.  But that’s not what happened here. The 16-year-old student was arrested on charges of resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, and given a smoking citation. He was also reportedly given a 10-day suspension, which the school later said it had reversed after video of the incident went viral.”

State seizes 11-year-old, arrests his mother for defending medical marijuana

“A spokesman confirmed that officers had searched Banda’s home, though he denied it was a raid. He also said the initial anti-drug program was put on entirely by the school — the police had no involvement. At that event Banda’s son apparently contradicted some of the claims made about marijuana. The school then contacted the child protection agency. Police officers showed up at Banda’s at home and asked her permission to conduct a search. She refused. They then obtained a warrant and searched her home. The spokesman wouldn’t comment except to say that there was ‘evidence’ of drug activity. Banda was then arrested and her son was seized from the home.”

‘Free-Range’ Kids and the Kidnapping Nanny State

“Bureaucrats employed by Montgomery County, Maryland, one of the wealthiest counties in the country, targeted the Meitiv family because the parents of the two children allowed them to walk home on their own from a park that is about a mile – approximately 5,000 steps – from their home.  That ended a month later in a Child Protective Services finding of ‘unsubstantiated neglect,’ which left a permanent black mark on the family’s official record.  On April 12, Montgomery County struck again – this time with police nabbing the children as they walked home from the park at 6.pm. and holding the two for almost six hours with no dinner and no communication as to why they were taken off the streets.”

Death penalty for grandmother convicted in girl’s running death?

“A jury is considering whether to recommend life or death for the Alabama grandmother they convicted of running her granddaughter to death.  The panel will hear additional evidence as it decides whether to recommend execution or life without parole for the murder of 9-year-old Savannah Hardin. The judge has the final say.  Prosecutors want death. They say Garrard brutally made the girl run for hours as punishment for a lie until she collapsed into seizures.  The defense is asking jurors to spare the woman. She’s married and has eight surviving grandchildren, and her lawyer says there’s no way she realized the consequences of her actions with only a ninth grade education.”

Middle Schooler Arrested For Changing Teacher’s Desktop Background

“A middle school student who said he was just trying to play a prank on a teacher he didn’t like was charged with a cybercrime Wednesday after authorities said he hacked into his school’s secure computer network.  The Pasco County Sheriff’s Office has charged Domanik Green, an eighth-grader at Paul R. Smith Middle School, with an offense against a computer system and unauthorized access, a felony. Sheriff Chris Nocco said Thursday that Green logged onto the school’s network on March 31 using an administrative-level password without permission. He then changed the background image on a teacher’s computer to one showing two men kissing.”

Cops Assault 17-Yr-Old Then Try To Delete Video; They Failed

“The officers proceeded to tell the teenagers that the vehicle smelled like marijuana and demand that the passengers step out of the vehicle.  At this point, there were four cop cars on the scene over a broken license plate light and the alleged smell of marijuana. The teenagers are asked to step out of the vehicle.  Brandon was ultimately tased four times. Eight cops were on the scene, with at least five of them involved in the assault on the unarmed teen.  At the end of the video, you can see an officer looking around the vehicle with a flashlight and then shutting off the camera. Brandon is currently imprisoned until July on charges of assault and battery on a police officer and resisting arrest.”
