School districts drop federal lunch program after kids won’t eat

“The Campbell County district is opting out of the federal school lunch program, forfeiting hundreds of thousands of dollars in federal funding.  The reason: Kids didn’t like their healthful lunches.  The 2,800-student district joins a small but growing number of school districts across the country – mostly wealthy districts who can afford to forfeit the money – who have dropped out of the federal program in the wake of stricter nutritional standards.  Schools said students don’t like the unsalted potatoes, low-fat cheese or the mandatory fruits and vegetables. They throw food away or decide not to eat at all.  If kids don’t buy lunch, the district loses money and has to dig into its general fund.”

The Final Nail in the Coffin: The Death of Freedom in Our Schools

AGOW_SMALL1

“Despite the fact that dinosaurs are extinct, the status fabricated, and the South Carolina student was merely following orders, his teacher reported him to school administrators, who in turn called the police.  What followed is par for the course in schools today: students were locked down in their classrooms while armed police searched the 16-year-old’s locker and bookbag, handcuffed him, charged him with disorderly conduct disturbing the school, arrested him, detained him, and then he was suspended from school. Stone’s mother was never alerted to the school’s concerns about her son’s creative writing assignment or his subsequent interrogation and arrest.”

Mom Calls Cops After Discovering Son, 15, Was Watching Porn

“A South Carolina woman yesterday summoned cops to her home after she discovered that her 15-year-old son had been watching pornography on the living room television.  According to a police report, Chavonda Gallman, 40, told sheriff’s deputies that she returned to her Spartanburg home yesterday at 3 PM with her two-year-old daughter and a client (Gallman is a real estate agent). Her son was in his room when the trio arrived.  Upon entering the home, Gallman’s daughter ‘turned on the TV and there was porn on.’ Gallman told investigators that ‘they immediately turned off the TV’ and took the child out of the room.”

New Mom Charged With Drug ‘Assault’ on Fetus

“A Tennessee woman is the first to be charged under a new state law that specifically makes it a crime to take drugs while pregnant, calling it ‘assault.’  The law, which just went into effect, allows a woman to be “prosecuted for assault for the illegal use of a narcotic drug while pregnant” if her infant is harmed or addicted to the drug.  Monroe County Sheriff Bill Bivens said he hoped the arrest would deter other pregnant women from drug use.  ‘Hopefully it will send a signal to other women who are pregnant and have a drug problem to seek help. That’s what we want them to do,’ he said. Critics say that the law will hinder drug-addicted pregnant women from getting help and treatment.”

And now: The criminalization of parenthood

“A couple of themes we explore here at The Watch are the increasing criminalization of just about everything and the use of the criminal justice system to address problems that were once (and better) handled by families, friends, communities and other institutions. A few examples from recent headlines show those themes intersecting with parenthood. The first story comes from South Carolina, where a mother was jailed and charged with ‘unlawful conduct toward a child’ for . . . leaving her 9-year-old daughter alone to play in a park.”

Son Skips Church, Father Arrested for Child Endangerment

“What started out as a normal Sunday morning for Jeffrey Williamson of Blanchester, Ohio, turned into a nightmare when police officers showed up to his front door and arrested him in front of his family. His crime? Child endangerment—as the authorities described it—because his son skipped church to go play with friends. He now faces up to six months in jail.  To make matters worse, as a result of local news coverage of the event, Williamson was fired from his job and remained unemployed for a period of time.  The haste by the police to arrest Williamson instead of inquiring further about the situation led to him his ability to financially provide for those same children.”

U.S. government waging war on school bake sales?

“The homemade brownies, cupcakes and Rice Krispies treats that parents prepare for these fundraisers will come under extra scrutiny because of new federal regulations that took effect July 1.  The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 puts the USDA in charge of monitoring whether schools meet the new healthy meal standards. The USDA also has the authority to set nutritional standards for all foods regularly sold in schools during the school day, including vending machines, the ‘a la carte’ lunch lines, school stores and the traditional K-12 bake sale.  More bake sales are offering processed, pre-packaged goods because the nutritional contents are clearly labeled.”

Homeless mom arrested for leaving children in car during job interview

“Shanesha Taylor was arrested for leaving her two children, then six months and two years old, in a car with the windows cracked and the fan blowing while she was interviewing for a job at a Scottsdale, Ariz., insurance agency for 69 minutes. It was about 71 degrees.  When she came out, the Dodge Durango that had sometimes served as her home was surrounded by police.  Crowdsourcing fundraisers worked quickly to gather more than $100,000 for Taylor and circulated a Change.org petition urging Maricopa County prosecutor Bill Montgomery to drop the charges against her. The petition garnered more than 57,000 signatures. Montgomery has said he will not drop the charges.”

S.C. mom jailed, facing prison for letting daughter play alone in park

“Plenty of working parents can relate to the dilemma Debra Harrell faced when her 9-year-old daughter asked to play unsupervised in a park this summer. How do you find the time and money for child care when school is out?   Harrell’s answer to that question got her arrested. She spent 17 days in jail, temporarily lost custody of her girl, thought she lost her job, and still faces 10 years in prison if convicted of felony child neglect.  South Carolina criminalizes leaving a child at ‘unreasonable risk of harm affecting the child’s life, physical or mental health, or safety.’ But the law offers no specifics on when a child can be left alone without supervision, giving police and prosecutors wide discretion.”

Florida mom arrested after letting 7-year-old walk to the park alone

“After letting her 7-year-old son walk from their home to a park to play, a Florida mother faces up to five years in jail for child neglect.  Nicole Gainey, 34, was arrested on July 26 after her son, Dominic, was found by police alone in a park less than a half-mile from her Port St. Lucie home.  According to the report, Gainey told the officer that she let her son go to the park alone once or twice a week.  The arresting officer said that Gainey had failed to provide her son with care and supervision by allowing him to cross the street and go to the park alone.  Gainey was arrested on a felony child neglect charge and taken to jail.”
