US Drug Policy and the Border Child Immigration Crisis

“The majority of the child immigrants are coming from El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. Those Northern Triangle countries suffered not only devastating civil wars in the 1980s, with the US supporting conservative, often dictatorial governments (or, in the case of Honduras, serving as a platform against the government in Nicaragua), but also chronic poverty and income inequality.  They are also the countries feeling the brunt of the expansion of powerful Mexican drug trafficking organizations who, in response to increased pressure from the Mexican government (assisted by US aid under the Merida agreement) began pushing south into the region around 2008.”

Bill Bonner: Confessions of a Former Child Laborer

Bill-Bonner2

“As soon as we were able, we went to work in the tobacco fields. In the 1950s and 1960s, tobacco was a cash crop in southern Maryland, where we grew up. But it was pénible: It was labor intensive and the working conditions were tough.  Labor was becoming more and more difficult to come by. Tenant farmers were packing up and moving to Washington DC, where they could get jobs in the government.  That left family. Boys – sons, cousins, nephews, friends – were rounded up in late August and put to work cutting, spearing, hauling and hanging tobacco.  We boys – earning about $5 a day, with no pénibilité points – were unaware of the painfulness of it. Instead, we made it a sport.”

Marijuana Child-Endangerment Cases Continue Despite Changing Laws

“A Colorado man loses custody of his children after getting a medical marijuana card. The daughter of a Michigan couple growing legal medicinal pot is taken by child-protection authorities after an ex-husband says their plants endangered kids.  And police officers in New Jersey visit a home after a 9-year-old mentions his mother’s hemp advocacy at school.  While the cases were eventually decided in favor of the parents, the incidents underscore a growing dilemma: While a pot plant in the basement may not bring criminal charges in many states, the same plant can become a piece of evidence in child custody or abuse cases.”

Mom Of Seven Dies In Prison After Judge Jailed Her For Kids’ Truancy

“The number of truancy violations charged to Dinino because her kids played hooky was coincidentally the same as her age: 55. They had been accumulating since 1999.  Under Pennsylvania law, parents can go to jail for five days for every single time their kids have an unexcused school absence.  Dinino had the option to pay $2,000 in fines but she couldn’t afford it, reports The Washington Post.  The sentencing judge, Dean R. Patton, said he sentenced the mother to jail reluctantly. He later criticized the sentencing guidelines he said he was required to follow.  ‘This lady didn’t need to be there,’ Patton said. ‘We don’t do debtors prisons anymore. That went out 100 years ago.'”

The day I left my son in the car

“Over the past two years, I’ve replayed this moment in my mind again and again, approaching the car, getting in, looking in the rearview mirror, pulling away. I replay it, trying to uncover something in the recollection I hadn’t noticed at the time. A voice. A face. Sometimes I feel like I can hear something. A woman? A man? “Bye now.” Something. But I can’t be sure.  We flew home. My husband was waiting for us beside the baggage claim with this terrible look on his face. ‘Call your mom,’ he said.  I called her, and she was crying. When she’d arrived home from driving us to the airport, there was a police car in her driveway.”

Nanny State Lessons from a German Homeschooling Family

“In its June 26, 2013, brief to the U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, Obama’s DOJ argued that ‘teaching tolerance to children of all backgrounds helps to develop the ability to interact as a fully functioning citizen of Germany.’  So according to the Obama administration, intolerant governments somehow foster toleration among schoolchildren. The Romeikes lost their 2013 asylum appeal, and last month the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear their case. Just one day later, the Department of Homeland Security suddenly reversed its opposition and informed the Romeikes they could remain in the United States indefinitely.”

Why I Sued the U.S. Government 28 Years Ago and What I Learned

“My name is Will Bonner.  In 1986, at the age of seven years old, I took the US Secretary of the Treasury, James A. Baker, to federal court over the US national debt.  When I was seven years old, I took James A Baker, former US Secretary of the Treasury, to court… over the US national debt.  I wasn’t looking for a big cash payday.  I was asking the court to prevent Mr. Baker and the United States Treasury from getting away with the biggest rip-off in history… a policy most people don’t understand or like to talk about… but one that I believed would ruin this country… And I wish I was writing to you to tell you that I had been successful… that I had stopped it.  But it didn’t turn out that way.”

Suit Goes To Bat For Future Taxpayers [1986]

“A lawsuit supported by the National Taxpayers Union and two state attorney generals has been filed on behalf of 60 million children, charging that deficit spending benefits today`s adults at the expense of youth who will have to bear the future burden.  The novel suit names Treasury Secretary James Baker as the defendant, and it seeks to enjoin Baker from issuing any new instruments of federal debt except in certain instances and to compel the establishment of a schedule to reduce the deficit.  It also argued that by forcing children to assume responsibility of debts now incurred by fiscally irresponsible adults, children are being denied equal protection of the laws under the 5th Amendment.”

Holder Admits, Calls For Rollback Of ‘Excessive’ Use Of Juvenile Solitary

“Attorney General Eric Holder called for an end to ‘excessive’ use of solitary confinement in juvenile facilities on Wednesday, saying that the practice ‘can be dangerous, and a serious impediment to the ability of juveniles to succeed once released.’  DOJ has previously taken action against juvenile correctional facilities in Ohio and California, and Holder said the Justice Department has received reports ‘of young people who have been held in solitary confinement for up to 23 hours a day, often with no human interaction at all.’ In some cases, Holder said, ‘children were held in small rooms with windows that were barely the width of their own hands.'”

Massachusetts Snatches Child Over Psychiatric Treatment Disagreement

“The Boston Globe reported that Suffolk County juvenile court Judge Joseph Johnston granted ‘permanent’ custody to the state DCF.  Justina was diagnosed with mitochondrial disease several years ago at Tufts Medical Center and put on a treatment plan to alleviate some of her symptoms. When her parents took her to Boston Children’s Hospital last year for complications with the flu, doctors there said she had somatoform disorder, a psychiatric disorder, instead.  After the Pelletiers disagreed with Boston Children’s treatment plan and tried to take her back to Tufts, they were accused of medical child abuse. DCF took custody of the teen on Feb. 13, 2013.”
