Teen Spends 13 Days in Jail for a Pocketknife in a School Parking Lot

“‘There are all these school occurrences where people are shot, people are killed by other students,’ the prosecutor, Harold Specht, said. ‘We see it every day … so we don’t take these things lightly. … We have to be sure that we don’t have a potential for something like that to happen here.’  Jordan Wiser said he’s offended by Specht’s characterization.  ‘I was enlisted in the Army and went to school to be [a] police officer and fireman,’ he said. ‘Why are they trying to paint me as a potential school shooter? I never had any intentions of hurting a soul.’  ‘Never in my life did I think this would happen,’ Wiser said. ‘I dedicated my life to public service, and now a four-inch pocketknife could ruin everything.'”

Top UK official involved in national porn filter arrested for child porn

“A top British government aide who helped create 10 Downing Street’s controversial policy to censor online pornography for the majority of British Internet users has resigned from his post on Monday after being arrested last month on charges of possessing child pornography.  Patrick Rock, a longstanding Tory adviser to Prime Minister David Cameron, had served as the deputy director of policy.  The prime minister’s office confirmed to British press that it had been ‘made aware of a potential offense relating to child abuse imagery’ on February 12, and Rock was arrested the next day at home.”

Associates defend anti-gun activist found carrying gun inside school

“He was a well-known face in the movement for the SAFE Act, the state law that made carrying a gun on school property a felony. He was also a familiar presence in the hallways of the city’s Harvey Austin Elementary School, where he worked in the after-school program and mentored students.  No one imagined that on Thursday he would show up at the school in possession of a gun, touching off an hours-long lockdown, search and ultimately his arrest on two felony charges.  He was among local activists who stood with Assemblywoman Crystal Peoples-Stokes last year lobbying for a law that would make possessing a gun on school property a felony.”

Frothing Panic On School Bus Over ‘Power Ranger’ Toy Gun

“A school bus driver in Auburn, Maine, stopped his vehicle and immediately called police after over hearing a student on board say the word ‘rifle’.  The driver, from Sherwood Heights Elementary School, opted to call in the cops rather than question the child himself.  When the Auburn police arrived, they discovered a toy ‘Power Rangers’ gun inside the backpack of one of the students, according to Superintendent Katy Grondin.  Referring to the school’s policy on weapons, the Superintendent stated that it prohibits ‘anything that could be perceived as real. We tell students, ‘To you it’s a toy, but it’s not appropriate.””

Medical marijuana kids bring Oklahoma families to Colorado

Age 6 at the time, Zoey had the developmental level of a 2-year-old.  Johnson’s father, Marty Piel, is expected to appear at a hearing along with other proponents before Oklahoma state lawmakers on Feb. 12. He said they hope for some kind of narrow exception in the state’s drug laws for children like Zoey.  Mark Woodward, a spokesman for the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs, said the agency is currently opposed to legalizing medications such as Charlotte’s Web. He said the agency believes for safety’s sake, the drug should go through the same federal approval process as others.”

10-Year-Old Carrying BB Guns on School Grounds Arrested

“Reno Police have arrested a 10-year-old boy near the Bailey Charter Elementary School area.  An official with the Reno Police Department says one child was arrested after being detained when people in the neighborhood saw him carrying what appeared to be a gun.  Upon further inspection, officers learned that the child was riding his bike on school property with an air propelled BB gun. Police say the boy was carrying 2 BB guns, one rifle and one pistol.  According to police, the child lives nearby the school. They say he has a history of making threats at the school. Reno Police tell KOLO 8 News Now the boy is being arrested on charges of possession of a dangerous weapon on school grounds.”

“The Oklahoma Second Amendment Association just released a letter dated July 25, 2013 from the Federal Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives confirming the following facts about Title 18 USC 922(q) ‘The Federal Gun Free School Zones Act.’ Bottom line: BATFE has confirmed in writing that everyone is subject to arrest and permanent loss of gun rights for gun possession within 1,000 feet of a school; a carry permit provides no protection outside your home state; lack of a permit puts you at complete risk in any populated area (click map for links).”

Government Tracking Students from Preschool to Workforce

“The $100 million repository that will catalog all the information is called inBloom, an initiative funded primarily through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and a division of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp.  The Department of Education is in the finishing stages of building a system to share student data with colleges and six other state agencies—a program known as ‘P-20.’ Some of the other agencies that may have access to the data by 2015 include the Department of Labor, Health and Taxation and Finance, and the offices of Technology and Children and Family Services.  In addition to money from the Gates Foundation, the DOE has received $40 million from state and federal agencies.”

UK porn filter blocks League of Legends update for ‘sex’ in file name

“The anti-pornography firewall run by the UK’s four top internet providers has blocked the latest League of Legends update because it happens to contain the letters ‘s,’ ‘e’ and ‘x’ in a row in two of its file names, The Guardian reports. The filter dings the following two files, forcing the update to fail with a ‘file not found’ error (emphasis added): XerathMageChainsExtended.luaobj VarusExpirationTimer.luaobj.  The Guardian says that the only recourse for those affected is to contact their internet providers and switch off the filter. The firewall is a new program and this problem should be contained to anyone who has signed up for a new ISP this month only.”

Everybody Panic!

“A middle school in Portsmouth, R.I. recently sent parents an alarming e-mail about kids who are ‘snorting’ or ‘smoking’ Smarties, a silly fad in which kids grind up the tart candy into a fine powder, then blow out the vapor as if they were smoking. (Full disclosure: I used to do something similar when my breath would freeze on frosty mornings.)  Yet everyone is worried. Portsmouth School Committee Chair Dave Croston asserts that the fad ‘would not be normal behavior’ (God forbid!), and raises the ‘troubling issue of modeling.’  The Smarties story is just one of a series of mini-panics about kids and substance abuse that seem to get recycled every few years.”
