7 Surprising Things That Could Make You A Sex Offender

“It’s hard to imagine that a sex offender registry — a public database run by states — would include anybody who wasn’t an adult pedophile or a rapist or seriously dangerous in some way. But sex offender registries can ensnare and publicly humiliate people who haven’t victimized anybody at all. Here are some of the more surprising ways you can end up on a sex offender registry.”

Report details lives ruined for children put on sex-offender registries

“Sex offender laws ‘that trigger registration requirements for children began proliferating in the United States during the late 1980s and early 1990s. They subject youth offenders to registration for crimes ranging from public nudity and touching another child’s genitalia over clothing to very serious violent crimes like rape.’  Registries can also include ‘people who have committed offenses like public urination, indecent exposure (such as streaking across a college campus), and other more relatively innocuous offenses.’  The report calls current registry laws ‘an overbroad policy of questionable effectiveness’ that leaves the public often unable to discern who on a registry is actually dangerous.”

California Considers Banning Online Tobacco, E-Cigarette Sales

“Online sales of electronic cigarettes and tobacco could be banned under a bill introduced by lawmakers on Monday.  Claiming kids and teens have easy access to tobacco and electronic cigarettes, Assemblyman Roger Dickinson (D-Sacramento) is introducing a bill blocking people from buying both on the Web.  ‘We need to do more to protect our children from a tobacco addiction and a lifetime of health-related problems,’ he said. ‘E-cigarettes are very much an emergency trend, and they are being marketed very closely to children and teens,’ said Kori Titus with Breathe California.  Since the health risks are still being studied, Titus believes they should not fall into the hands of children.”

Aussie Mum In Anti-Bitcoin Crusade After Son’s Death

“Anna Skelly came home from holiday with her husband to find her son dead on her bed after what looks to be a bad reaction to cocaine. Cocaine which he reportedly acquired from an online drug marketplace, financed by Bitcoin transactions. Now the Sydney mother is going on a crusade against the crypto-currency, calling on the Federal Government to ban it in Australia.  Anna Skelly has launched her own change.org petition to have Bitcoin banned in Australia.  ‘Tony Abbott,’ the petition starts, ‘commence an inquiry into Bitcoin – it’s protecting drug dealers.'”

E-cigarette bans considered across the U.S.

“Supporters of the bills say e-cigarettes may cause people to start toxic addictions and may pose unknown health risks to the public. ‘These are being touted as safer than cigarettes, but we don’t really know that,’ said Councilman James Gennaro, who co-sponsored New York City’s bill. ‘Just seeing people smoking things that look identical to cigarettes in subway cars, colleges and public libraries will tend to re-normalize the act of smoking and send the wrong message to kids.’  Local governments including Concord City and Petaluma in California, and Lee, Lenox, Stockbridge, North Attleborough, Somerset and South Hadley in Massachusetts also have similar laws, officials said.”

‘WAR SUX’ license plate banned for ‘emotional wellbeing of youth’

“The state of Michigan has told a court that it was protecting children when it refused to issue a vanity license plate with the phrase ‘WAR SUX.’  In documents filed last month in a Grand Rapids federal court, attorneys for the secretary of state’s office said that a lawsuit brought by David DeVarti should be dismissed because children often amused themselves by reading license plates.  The document went on to note that courts often allowed ‘the physical and emotional wellbeing of youth’ to trump free speech rights protected by the First Amendment.”

Life in the Emerging American Police State: What’s in Store for 2014?

AGOW_WebAD_Small2

“We in the emerging American police state find ourselves reliving the same set of circumstances over and over again—egregious surveillance, strip searches, police shootings of unarmed citizens, government spying, the criminalization of lawful activities, warmongering, etc.—although with far fewer moments of comic hilarity.  What remains to be seen is whether 2014 will bring more of the same or whether ‘we the people’ will wake up from our somnambulant states. Indeed, when it comes to civil liberties and freedom, 2013 was far from a banner year. The following is just a sampling of what we can look forward to repeating if we don’t find some way to push back.”

‘Buckyballs’ magnate says feds took him down for speaking out

“With his million-dollar company belly-up for a product he still believes is safe, Zucker took out online ads lampooning the nanny-state regulatory mentality.  ‘Coconuts: tasty fruit or deadly sky ballistic?’ read one. ‘Stairways: are they really worth the risk?’  Zucker’s company was one of a dozen selling high-powered magnets that faced sanctions from the commission, but it was the only one of three named in the suit that voluntarily went out of business. And now, Zucker is the only individual being pursued personally for a financial judgment that could top $50 million to pay for the recall. Zucker believes it is because he taunted his regulatory tormentors.”

Forget cursive: Teach kids how to code

“Name the last time, besides your signature, that you wrote or read anything in cursive.  Chances are that you can’t. Neither can the National Governors Association, which left it out of the new Common Core educational standards. In response, seven states — California, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Massachusetts, North Carolina, and Utah — are writing cursive requirements back into the curriculum.  ‘Modern research indicates that more areas of the human brain are engaged when children use cursive handwriting than when they keyboard,’ Idaho state Rep. Linden Bateman (R) told the Associated Press. ‘It’s beyond belief to me that states have allowed cursive to slip from the standards.'”

Brewington case focuses First Amendment attention on Indiana

“Daniel Brewington is either a poster child for the wrongful prosecution of free speech or a man whose online rants about a judge constituted criminal threats. It all depends on your point of view.  After almost two years in the Department of Correction, Brewington was freed Sept. 5, just days before the Indiana Supreme Court heard oral arguments on whether to formally grant transfer in his case. Brewington had done his time for a Dearborn County jury’s conviction of intimidation, perjury and obstruction of justice stemming from blog posts he made criticizing a judge who stripped him of joint custody of his children.”
