School suspends 6-year-old for kissing girl on the hand

“As a result of kissing a fellow student on the hand during class, 6-year-old Hunter Yelton now has a permanent record.  His Colorado school district has a zero-tolerance policy on sexual harassment, which school officials maintain the boy violated with his peck. The boy was suspended from first grade at Lincoln School of Science and Technology in Canon city, Colo. His mother is protesting the school’s actions as extreme and not age-appropriate.  School officials, who are not responding to further media requests, have told local media that the boy’s buss fits district standards for sexual harassment.”

“A private security guard asked Madison to stop selling because city ordinance bans commerce like that without proper approval.  The Saturday Market is incredibly diverse.  You can buy whistles, order crepes and sign a marijuana petition all without walking more than ten steps.  But you can’t open a business without going through the market’s formal application process. The market sets rules for vendors which Madison agrees make sense.  Begging is different.  That’s a form of free speech, protected under the First Amendment, explains Mark Ross, spokesman for the Portland Parks Bureau, which manages the city park and rents it to the Saturday Market.”

Regulate e-cigarettes like tobacco products, 40 attorneys general urge FDA

“Forty-two state attorneys general, however, have given the U.S. Food and Drug Administration a sharp nudge to regulate the advertising, ingredients and sale to minors of the devices.  FDA Deputy Commissioner Sally Howard wrote the AGs that the ‘FDA intends to extend its authority over products that meet the statutory definition of ‘tobacco product.’’ The proposed rule to accomplish this is under review by the Office of Management and Budget, she said.  ‘I can’t stress enough this is about protecting youth. A uniform policy by the FDA makes the most sense. That’s why our preference was to move forward in this direction,’ Jackley said of the AGs letter to the FDA.”

New Mexico Police Fire Into Minivan Filled With Children

“The New Mexico State Police have not removed any of the officers from active duty. Ferrell was charged with five counts of abuse of a child, aggravated fleeing an officer, resisting an officer, reckless driving and possession of drug paraphernalia. The abuse of a child is interesting given the fact that it was the officers that fired into a van full of children. Moreover, it is not clear what the basis is for the charge against her teenage son for battery of an officer.  There was ample reason for an arrest, but the excessive force used by the police is very disturbing and warrants a full investigation. The officer firing the weapon could have killed three children with this unjustified use of force.”

Ten teenagers arrested for child porn production via Snapchat

“Ten teenage boys were arrested Thursday in Quebec in connection with their use of the app Snapchat, according to CTV Montreal. All of the boys are suspected of producing and distributing child pornography, thanks to photos obtained via Snapchat.  CTV reports that the boys allegedly lured seven girls into sending pornographic photos to them, using the fact that Snapchat messages self-destruct as bait. What the girls apparently did not know (or trusted would not happen) is that there are a slew of ways to preserve Snapchat messages.  The boys are set to appear in court on charges of the production, possession, and distribution of child pornography.”

B.C. school bans kindergarteners from touching each other

“A Langley elementary school has banned kindergarten students from touching each other at recess, a policy some parents think is both unnecessary and unworkable.  Mom Julie Chen said she was shocked when she received a letter sent home with Coghlan Fundamental Elementary students on Friday outlining the new hands-off rule. ‘I can’t imagine little kids not being able to hug each other or help each other on the playground,’ Chen told CTV News. ‘No tag, no hugging, no touching at all.’  School district spokesman Ken Hoff said Coghlan Fundamental was simply responding to parents’ complaints about rough play during recess, and that students won’t be [severely] penalized for slipping up.”

Global mercury ban would not affect vaccines with thimerosal

“The treaty says that certain mercury-added products, such as batteries, lamps, switches, skin-lightening cosmetics, pesticides and thermometers, may not be manufactured, imported or exported any later than 2020.  Mercury-added dental amalgams are also to be phased out.  However, certain mercury-added products are to be exempted from the ban, including those used for military and civil protection, products with no mercury-free alternative, products used in religious or traditional practices, and vaccines containing thimerosal, an ethylmercury preservative.”
