Oklahoma residents, officials, experts support medical marijuana

“Faced with some of the harshest marijuana laws in the nation, Oklahoma residents overwhelmingly favor its use for medical purposes while also endorsing decriminalization. Recent survey data from SoonerPoll.com shows 71 percent of likely Oklahoma voters support amending the law to allow for physician-authorized patients to consume cannabis for therapeutic reasons. Twenty-one states and the District of Columbia have enacted similar measures since 1996.  Because of Oklahoma’s strict legal stance, more and more state residents are moving to Colorado to receive medical treatment involving marijuana.”

Officer Who Killed 13-year-old With Toy Rifle Pulled Gun At Traffic Stop

“The Sonoma County sheriff’s deputy who shot and killed a 13-year-old boy after mistaking his toy AK-47 for a real rifle pulled a gun on a motorist twice during a traffic stop on Highway 101 about two months earlier, the driver said Thursday.  Jeff Westbrook of Santa Rosa said he was mistreated by Deputy Erick Gelhaus after being pulled over Aug. 21 in Cotati for failing to signal a lane change in his BMW. The interaction troubled Westbrook so much that he recalled asking Gelhaus at one point, ‘Sir, is there something wrong with you?’ ‘I felt like I was watching somebody I needed to help,’ said Westbrook, 57, a program manager at an information technology company.”

Tennessee judge barred baby name ‘Messiah’, accused of religious bias

“A magistrate court judge in Tennessee who forced a couple to change the name of their child from Messiah to Martin has been cited for religious bias by a state ethics panel and will face a disciplinary hearing.  Ballew’s statement supporting the name change filed by her with the order on August 13, 2013 said that ‘This court finds that it is not in the child’s best interest to keep the first name, ‘Messiah’. ‘Messiah’ means Savior, Deliverer, the One who will restore God’s Kingdom. ‘Messiah’ is a title held only by Jesus Christ.’ Reuters noted that Messiah was the 387th most popular name for boys born in the United States in 2012.”

Wisconsin jails pregnant woman, gives fetus – but not her – a lawyer

“Alicia Beltran said she was 12 weeks pregnant when she visited a health clinic July 2 near her home in Jackson, Wisc., for a checkup.  The expectant mother was then asked to take a drug test, which she said turned up negative for all substances except for Suboxone.  Beltran was arrested and taken in handcuffs to a hospital, where she was examined by a physician.  Her lawyers said the pregnancy was determined to be normal and healthy, but she was taken to jail and ordered by a judge to spend 90 days in a drug treatment center.  The judge told Belran that she would not have an attorney present but one had been appointed to represent her fetus.”

Overseas adoptions rise — for black American children

“While the number of international adoptions is plummeting — largely over questions surrounding the origin of children put up for adoption in developing countries — there is one nation from which parents abroad can adopt a healthy infant in a relatively short time whose family history and medical background is unclouded by doubt: The United States.  While the typical tale of international adoption is U.S. families adopting a child from abroad, foreign families like the van Meurs adopt scores of U.S. children each year.  Over the past decade the number of U.S. children adopted by foreign parents has been steadily rising — and almost all of the children are of African American descent, say attorneys.”

Mom faces arrest after bringing breast-fed newborn to jury duty

“A Missouri woman is to face court this week for bringing her new born child to the courthouse for jury duty because she was breastfeeding.  Laura Trickle, of Lee’s Summit, delivered her daughter Axel in March and was breastfeeding when she was called for jury duty in August.  She asked to be exempt from appearing, as she was breastfeeding, but received notice that she must report to court to fullfill her civic obligation and serve jury duty, according to the Kansas City Star.  Those who skip jury duty can be found in contempt of court and ordered to pay a fine of up to $500 and maybe even be arrested.  Breastfeeding women are exempted from jury duty in 12 states.”

Cop suspended for sex with teen, hosting underage drinking parties

“Cody Lee Smith, 21, of Wyoming, is charged with three counts of corruption of minors and one count of furnishing alcohol to a minor.  The girl reported she met Smith at his home in Wyoming in the summer of 2012, when he was hosting an underage drinking party, police said. She told police no parents were at the party and that Smith provided the teens alcohol then and on ‘numerous occasions’ at his home, according to the affidavit.  The girl told investigators Smith told her on June 30, his birthday, that he’d had a great time with her but he couldn’t continue to see her because he had turned 21, according to the affidavit.”

San Mateo County deputy accused of child sex abuse

“A San Mateo County sheriff’s deputy faces charges that he molested a young female relative.  Galen Underwood, 40, of Gilroy appeared Monday in Santa Clara County Superior Court in Morgan Hill but did not enter a plea to seven felony counts, including continuous sexual abuse of a child, forcible penetration with a foreign object and forced oral copulation, said Deputy District Attorney Stuart Scott. The investigation began last week when the girl disclosed the alleged abuse to a counselor, who notified authorities, Scott said. He said the crimes occurred at two different locations linked to the family in Santa Clara County.  Underwood has been placed on paid administrative leave.”
