“The federal government has taken a chunk of taxpayers’ money and handed it over to Boston’s tax-funded schools. The money will be used to supply free lunches for all students. There will be no means-testing. Rich kids will get free meals. Why? So as to avoid the sense of shame in the hearts of poor kids, who might see their families as charity cases, which of course they are. Reality is painful. Self-awareness is painful. Politicians spend their careers trying to find ways to shield voters from reality.”

Chris Christie over his delay in signing a law that would make it possible for Wilson’s two-year-old daughter to receive the medical marijuana she was prescribed under state law. The testy exchange was quickly picked up by numerous media outlets.  Although medical marijuana has been legal in New Jersey for three-and-a-half years, Christie’s Department of Health has made it nearly impossible for patients to obtain medical marijuana in the Garden State.  Is the former federal prosecutor simply pandering to the national Republican base in preparation for a 2016 run for president?”

Censorship in Libraries: 10 Years Under the Children’s Internet Protection Act

“The law is supposed to encourage public libraries and schools to filter child pornography and obscene or ‘harmful to minors’ images from the library’s Internet connection in exchange for continued federal funding. Unfortunately, as Deborah Caldwell-Stone explains in Filtering and the First Amendment, aggressive interpretations of this law have resulted in extensive and unnecessary censorship in libraries, often because libraries go beyond the legal requirements of CIPA when implementing content filters. As a result, students and library patrons across the country are routinely and unnecessarily blocked from accessing constitutionally protected websites.”

Russian legislators introduce bill to take children away from LGBT parents

“A Russian lawmaker has introduced a bill that would allow the state to remove children from homes headed by LGBT parents. The draft bill was published on the Russian parliament’s website Thursday morning and proposed to make the ‘fact of nontraditional sexual orientation’ grounds for removing or denying parental custody rights.  The bill, if passed, would add sexual orientation to a list of disqualifying factors that includes alcoholism, drug addiction and a history of child abuse. Bill author Alexei Zhuravlev said that the law would be a natural extension of a law passed earlier this year that bans so-called ‘homosexual propaganda.'”

Families upset with how deputies handled boys’ arrests

“‘I frantically ran across the police officers where threatening to put us under custody for wanting to know what was going on with our children,’ she said.  Her child, Josmir, along with two of his friends, was being arrested by Charlotte County deputies.  ‘I saw some of the police officers laughing at me,’ said Josmir. ‘Like I deserved this, like I was a horrible person, a criminal. They were just laughing, laughing at all of us.’  The charge was trespassing on Port Charlotte Middle School grounds.  ‘I think this was an innocent mistake that went too far because they have power and they though they were going to get away with it,’ Mirna said.”

Child shoots SWAT officer with his own gun at California ‘Literacy Fair’

“A child who was thought to be no older than 8-years-old shot a SWAT officer with his service weapon at a literacy fair in California last week while he was showing off tactical equipment to kids.  Lodi Police Chief Mark Helms told KMAX that the incident took place at the ‘2013 Literacy Fair: Little Buckaroos Reading Roundup’ on Aug. 24. Helms said that SWAT Officer Robert Rench was in a SWAT vehicle demonstrating equipment to children when a boy, between 6 and 8 years old, walked up behind him and fired his holstered Glock .40 caliber service weapon into his leg.  Police were also searching for the identity of the boy, who ran from the scene after the gun discharged.”

Both of them are second-  and third-generation victims of exposure to dioxin as a result of the U.S. military’s use of a defoliant called Agent Orange that was used extensively over parts of southern Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia.”

Pelosi has likewise been silent about the ongoing horrors experienced by the children of Fallujah, an Iraqi city that was pulverized by the US military in 2004.”

Mother charged with baby’s murder over prescription drug-laced breast milk

“An eight-month-old boy in Sacramento, California died after drinking his mother’s breast milk, which contained Xanax, methadone and the opiate painkiller Opana. According to the Sacramento Bee, the baby’s mother, 32-year-old Sarah Anne Stephens appeared in court on Friday on charges of murder and two felony counts of child endangerment.  Stephens was reportedly warned five months before the baby died to stop breast-feeding if she was going to continue to abuse prescription drugs. The baby’s grandfather alleged that Stephens used her drugged breast milk to keep the baby in a stupor, which made him quiet and easy to manage.”
