School District Hires Company To Monitor Students’ Social Media Posts

“The Glendale Unified School District has hired a Hermosa Beach company to monitor public social media posts made by its students to find out when teens are in trouble or causing it.  Superintendent Richard Sheehan said Geo Listening is analyzing the posts of 13,000 students at eight Glendale middle and high schools.  The goal is to give school administrators critical information as soon as possible.  ‘The whole purpose is student safety,’ said Sheehan. ‘Basically, it just monitors for keywords where if a student is considering harming themselves, harming someone else.’ He added, ‘We do monitor on and off campus, but we do pay attention during school hours.'”

Public school is now officially a prison; Parents not allowed to walk kids to class

“At some point we have to ask ourselves as a society if we’re going to let abject fear take over our lives or if we’re going to stand up and overcome our fears by being proactive and solutions-oriented.  I’m talking in particular about new security policies implemented by a number of schools in North Texas, beginning this year. According to CBS Dallas-Fort Worth, new tradition-killing rules prohibit parents – parents, mind you – from walking their kids to the front door of their school.  In the Hurst-Euless-Bedford (HEB) Independent School District, the report said, parents will have only the first week to walk their young ones to class. The new ‘security’ policy will go into effect after that.”

Drones For Safe Passage? ‘Why Not?’ Ald. Cardenas Asks

“If a Chicago alderman has his way, the city could someday see drones buzzing through the skies as part of an effort to keep students safe as they walk to school. ‘We could use the help.!’ Ald. George Cardenas (12th) tweeted, along with an article from The Telegraph outlining ways the remote-controlled, unmanned aerial vehicles have been used outside of military actions.  ‘Why not use drones in safe passage.??’ Cardenas said ‘there is no doubt technology is migrating from military use. … It’s going to take time to find those uses in an urban environment. It is, however, the future and I think people will want to take that leap. I think eventually we’re going to have to look at this technology.'”

“When I was a kid, our only concerns were whether or not our clothes would be cool enough to meet the other kids’ approval or if we would have someone to sit with during lunch. But now students have a whole new batch of problems.  Will their jewelry set off the metal detectors as they enter the school?  Will they have to crouch behind a desk in fear as a gunman shoots up the place? In the case of Chicago, will they be shot as they cross gangland borders on their walk to school? Will they be terrorized during an unannounced ‘live shooter drill’ as was the case in Rossford, Ohio? Will they be ensconced for the day in a prison-like setting, with grates on the windows and heavy steel doors?”

They make up the majority of parents in prison, and they and their children are the ones criminal justice reform will most affect.  One in 28 kids in the United States (as of 2010) has a mother or father, or both, in lockup – a dramatic change from the one in 125 rate a quarter of a century ago. One in nine black children have an imprisoned parent, four times as many 25 years ago. 14,000 or more children of the imprisoned annually enter foster care, while an undetermined number enter juvenile detention and adult prisons.”

Kentucky students to first lady Michelle Obama: Your food ‘tastes like vomit’

“Jack Miniard, the school district’s director of school and community nutrition, was on hand to explain that the federal government now governs both food choices and portion sizes. Under the National School Lunch Program, participating schools must provide lunches — including free or reduced price lunches — with minimum amounts of fresh fruits, fresh vegetables and whole grains. There’s a calorie cap: 850 for high school lunches, 700 for middle schools and a mere 650 calories for kids in elementary school. Students can only have one serving of meat or other protein. However, rich kids can buy a second portion each day on their own dime.”
