Detroit Bus Co. moving in the right direction

“In early 2012, when Detroit’s dysfunctional bus system was all over the news, Andy Didorosi founded the Detroit Bus Co. with three buses and the hope he could do something to help our carless citizens who wait in frustration for buses that can be hours late and sometimes don’t come at all.  He got lots of press and even a citation from Detroit City Council for stepping in to help.  Now a year and a half into the bus biz, Didorosi has found a way to give Detroiters a service they really need. The Detroit Bus Co. is building a program to pick up kids at ‘safe spots’ and drive them to summer and after-school programs and bring them safely home.  The buses run on biodiesel.”

Common Core Exams Put on Hold

“The common core curriculum mandates a common core system of exams. Most students will flunk these exams. This is inevitable. The results in New York are the canary in the coal mine. The failure rate was 69%. Blacks and Hispanics failed at an 84% rate. Parents are up in arms. The common core curriculum will not redeem the public schools. It will instead expose the public schools as utter failures. This will not be tolerated by local politicians, who take the heat for the failures in public schools. They will demand that the educrats turn down the heat. The tests are in the first stage of a roll-back. The Obama Administration is blaming the sequestration.”

Striking teachers block access to Mexico City airport

“Thousands of teachers severely disrupted access to Mexico City’s international airport, forcing some travelers to abandon cars and roll suitcases on foot during a protest against education reform.  President Enrique Pena Nieto pushed through Congress changes to the constitution in December in order to put education, which was in the hands of powerful unions, back under government control and require teachers to undergo mandatory performance appraisals.  More than 70,000 teachers went on strike in southern Mexico, leaving more than one million children without classes at the start of the school year this week.”

Librarian wants to ban 5-time reading champ from contest

“After Tyler Weaver read 63 books between June 24 and Aug. 3 to win this year’s Dig Into Reading competition at the Hudson Falls Public Library, director Marie Gandron told a reporter from the Glens Falls Post-Star that Weaver ‘hogs’ the contest every year and should ‘step aside.’  ‘Other kids quit because they can’t keep up,’ Gandron said.  Gandron’s declaration didn’t sit well with Tyler and his family.  ‘When he heard what the director said [about him] he was very upset,’ Katie Weaver, Tyler’s mother, told TODAY. ‘He’s never seen being good at reading to be a negative thing. And he shouldn’t! He realized that the director was wrong.'”

NYC Comptroller: Legalize and Tax Marijuana

“New York City Comptroller John Liu Wednesday released a report calling for the legalization, regulation, and taxation of marijuana. Doing so would reduce the harms generated by marijuana prohibition and generate more than $400 million a year in taxes to pay for higher education, Liu said.  Liu estimated the size of the city’s marijuana market at $1.65 billion a year and proposed using tax revenues from the legalized trade to cut tuition at the City University of New York (CUNY) by up to 50%. ‘In this way, we’ll invest in young people’s futures, instead of ruining them,’ he said.”

This Public Preschool Looks Like a Prison

This Public Preschool Looks Like a Prison

“The front entrance is card key secured, and a thick metal door attached to a gated metal security tunnel with a metal walkway leads back to a hallway of numbered, metal buildings. Every single window, including the little ones on the thick metal doors inside, have metal gratings bolted on the outside of them. It felt like I was walking through a medium security prison facility. Four-year-olds attend this campus. That means these little ones are spending the majority of their weekdays all day long inside this place.”

School Has Become Too Hostile to Boys

“As school begins in the coming weeks, parents of boys should ask themselves a question: Is my son really welcome? A flurry of incidents last spring suggests that the answer is no.  In all these cases, school officials found the children to be in violation of the school’s zero-tolerance policies for firearms, which is clearly a ludicrous application of the rule. But common sense isn’t the only thing at stake here. In the name of zero tolerance, our schools are becoming hostile environments for young boys.  As our schools become more risk averse, the gender gap favoring girls is threatening to become a chasm.”

The Drug War Murders a Toddler

“Joshua Hill didn’t know that his July 25 visit with his daughter Alexandria would be the last he would enjoy.  Four days later the two-year-old child was killed by the state-licensed foster mother who had been given custody after Joshua’s daughter was seized by the Texas Child Protective Service. Why was this child taken away from loving and capable parents? Last November, the state confiscated the infant from her home because the parents admitted to using marijuana on occasion. This was described as ‘neglectful supervision,’ a charge that permitted the child-snatchers to deliver the infant into the hands of an aggressively abusive individual.”

Tennessee Republican tells girl her father has to be deported as tea party crowd cheers

“A Tennessee tea party Republican state legislator told a frightened little girl at a town hall meeting on Thursday in Murfreesboro, TN that laws are laws and that her undocumented father is going to have to be deported. According to ProgressivePopulist.org, 11-year-old Josie Molina told state Rep. Scott Desjarlais (R) that she has papers but her father does not.  The tea party crowd whooped and applauded wildly as the little girl took her seat, head down. Progressive Populist reported that Josie Molina’s father is currently in the process of being deported and that the girl is seeing a child psychologist in order to cope with the stress and anxiety.”

CNN highlights how marijuana prohibition harms children

“‘Think of the children,’ is usually the rallying cry of opponents of drug legalization. But CNN on Thursday highlighted how marijuana prohibition was actually harmful to some children who were denied the potentially life-saving drug. In a segment on The Lead, CNN host Jake Tapper interviewed a man whose young daughter suffers from a rare form of epilepsy that causes her to have daily seizures. The condition has been treated with a special strain of marijuana, but the young girl is currently prohibited from using it under New Jersey state law. Brian Wilson recently confronted Gov. Chris Christie (R) about the issue.”
