Television set injuries on the rise in the U.S.

“Television sets injure one child every 30 minutes in America, and the rate of emergency room visits is increasing with the popularity of flat-screen TVs, according to a new study. Just over half (52 percent) of all TV injuries for those under 18 from 1990 to 2011 were due to the equipment falling and hitting the patient, said the study in the journal Pediatrics. The number of falling TV injuries was 5,455 in 1990, but that more than doubled to 12,300 in 2011, the study said.  The number of US households with multiple TVs has more than doubled since 1990.  Previous research has found that 215 children died from a falling TV injury from 2000 to 2011.”

Britain considers banning Internet pornography over ‘corroding’ influence on children

“Every household in Britain connected to the internet will be obliged to declare whether they want to maintain access to online pornography, David Cameron will announce on Monday. In the most dramatic step by the government to crack down on the ‘corroding’ influence of pornography on childhood, the prime minister will say that all internet users will be contacted by their service providers and given an ‘unavoidable choice’ on whether to use filters. The changes will be introduced by the end of next year. All police forces will work with a single secure database of illegal images of children to help ‘close the net on paedophiles’.”

‘Crack baby’ study ends with unexpected but clear result

“A social worker on TV predicted that a crack baby would grow up to ‘have an IQ of perhaps 50.’ A print article quoted a psychologist as saying ‘crack was interfering with the central core of what it is to be human,’ and yet another article predicted that crack babies were ‘doomed to a life of uncertain suffering, of probable deviance, of permanent inferiority.’  But the researchers consistently found no significant differences between the cocaine-exposed children and the controls. Drug use did not differ between the exposed and nonexposed participants as young adults.”

Medical Marijuana for Kids Could Pit Parents Against Pediatricians

“Hope resident Jennie Stormes advocated for the change in the law on behalf of Jackson Stormes, a 14 year old who has used marijuana to reduce the symptoms of Dravet Syndrome, a severe form of epilepsy. She said the substance has reduced the intensity and duration of her son’s seizures, after years of unsuccessful approaches such as brain surgery. ‘The additional doctor appointments for a child who has failed so many medications, brain surgery, and other treatments are cruel and the cost is burdensome for a single mother who is working more than one job without any child support,’ said Stormes, a pediatric nurse.”

Fearful Indian schoolchildren refuse free school meals after 22 die, dozens sickened

“India’s state governments run the world’s largest school feeding programme involving 120 million children. Bihar is one of India’s most populated and poorest states. Educators see the scheme as a way to increase school attendance, in a country where almost half of all young children are undernourished. But children often suffer from food poisoning due to poor hygiene in kitchens and occasionally sub-standard food. Authorities have instructed all teachers and cooks in the state to first taste the free lunch before serving to the children.  ‘We will have to make parents believe that mid-day meals provide nutrition and are not meant to kill students,’ said Lakshmanan.”

San Antonio Public School Officials End RFID Tracking Program

“After a drawn-out battle waged in court and within the community, school officials with the Northside Independent School District have announced their decision to stop using a student tracking program that relied on RFID tracking badges containing tiny chips that produce a radio signal, enabling school officials to track students’ location on school property.  Students who refused to take part in the ID program were not able to access essential services like the cafeteria and library, nor would they be able to purchase tickets to extracurricular activities. According to Hernandez, teachers were even requiring students to wear the IDs to use the bathroom.”

Utah lawmaker calls for an end to compulsory education

“Osmond argues that requiring children to attend school has caused some parents to ‘completely disengage themselves from their obligation to oversee and ensure the successful education of their children.’ ‘I believe the time has come for us to re-evaluate what we expect of parents and the public education system.’ Osmond recommends ‘restoring the parental right to decide if and when a child will go to public school’ to uphold the ‘principles of personal freedom and unalienable rights.’ Part of the solution, he believes, is to ‘stop dictating the number of hours a child must be present in a classroom.'”

Riot in India as ‘poisonous’ school lunch kills 21 children

“Twenty-one children have died after eating a free lunch feared to contain poisonous chemicals at a school in eastern India, officials said Wednesday, sparking angry protests as mobs ran riot. Another 30 children remained ill in hospital after consuming the meal of lentils, vegetables and rice.  Free lunches are offered to poorer students in state-run schools as part of government welfare measures in many of India’s 29 states. Educators see the midday meal scheme as a way to increase school attendance. But children often suffer from food poisoning due to poor hygiene in kitchens and occasionally sub-standard food.”

FDA approves first brain wave test for ADHD

“US regulators on Monday approved the first brain wave test for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, saying it may improve the accuracy of diagnoses by medical experts. Cases of ADHD are on the rise in the U.S., as are the number of prescriptions for stimulants doled out to young people who appear to have difficulty concentrating or controlling impulses. The new test, known as the Neuropsychiatric EEG-Based Assessment Aid (NEBA) System, measures electrical impulses given off by neurons in the brain. ‘The theta/beta ratio has been shown to be higher in children and adolescents with ADHD than in children without it,’ the FDA said.”

This officer is the one who was threatening my wife with having CPS take our two youngest daughters away.”
