“The irony is that while marijuana has definitely been ‘genetically modified’ to contain higher levels of THC, that change didn’t involve the tools of modern biotechnology.   In the 1950s and 1960s many plant breeders employed ‘mutation breeding’ to increase the chances of finding DNA changes that would result in new traits.  They would also use the toxic chemical colchicine to induce the plants to double their number of chromosomes, something that sometimes leads to more vigorous growth.  The crops developed using these clumsy tools have never been regulated or safety tested like biotech crops.  They qualify for use in organic farming.  Such crops would not have to be [GMO] labeled.”

When its diet consists of manure, however, it’s basically like feeding them salmonella and E.coli.  The large amount of antibiotics that are given to the fish to ward off infections from the manure — which is used as a cheap alternative to fish feed — makes the strains of salmonella and E.coli those fish catch extremely hard to eliminate.”

As well there exist strict criteria by which such an article can be withdrawn after publication. The Journal of Food and Chemical Toxicology has apparently decided to violate those procedures, announcing it is retracting a long-term study on the toxic effects of Monsanto Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs)—GMO Maize it published a year ago. The bizarre reports come only six months after Elsevier created a special new position, Associate Editor for Biotechnology (i.e. GMO), and filled it with a former Monsanto employee.”

Yet there was little market demand for alternatives, which included blends of soybean, cottonseed and palm oils.  McDonald’s, KFC and other restaurant companies had quietly been experimenting with substitute frying oils and shortening for years, trying to see if they could make the switch without consumers noticing a change in taste. All of those efforts went into overdrive when Bloomberg’s health board implemented the ban, and effectively created a huge new marketplace for trans fat alternatives overnight.”

Soylent gets a $1.5 million infusion of venture capital

‘Monsanto Protection Act’ attached to Obamacare defunding bill

“The House Republican government funding bill, which passed in the House last week, contains a three-month extension of the Monsanto Protection Act, which shields companies like Monsanto and Dow Chemical from legal action resulting from Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) crops. The Act also places the authority of whether or not GMO crops can be grown and sold domestically into the hands of Federal Department of Agriculture rather than with the courts or public referendum. The Democratically-controlled Senate is making no plans to work to keep the rider active beyond its current expiration date.”
