“Liberland, or the Free Republic of Liberland to give it its full title, is a would-be sovereign state founded April 13 by Vit Jedlicka and two fellow libertarians. Its total area of approximately seven square kilometers would make it the third smallest sovereign state in the world, after the Vatican and Monaco. It’s sandwiched between Croatia and Serbia on the western bank of the Danube River. The objective is to build a country where honest people can prosper with minimal interference from a centralized government. All taxes will be voluntary, and the nation’s services – such as power, healthcare and waste disposal – will be run either by private enterprises or through crowdfunding campaigns.”

The Gig Economy Makes Karl Marx’s Dreams Come True
“Marx should be delighted — oh, except that it’s capitalism, not communism, that’s allowing Joe to be a fisherman and a critic on his own terms. The sharing or ‘gig’ economy is not only disrupting the way people live and work; it’s dividing the left considerably. On the one hand, you have the nostalgic leftists who want Joe to work a nine-to-five job and skip the fishing. You know, like people did in the 1950s. [..] Should we be upset that the guy who founded Lyft is getting rich from the tech? Some people see the accumulation of wealth as taboo. But Joe’s life is better than it would have been in the absence of Lyft. The company allows him to live more of the life he wants to live.”

Uber reduced drinking and driving deaths in California, study suggests
“Uber’s economy driving service appears to have reduced drinking and driving deaths in California cities where the service is offered, says a new study that comes as many Canadian municipalities are trying to keep the service from expanding in their cities. The study analyzed data from 2009 to 2014 and concluded the UberX service resulted in a decrease in drinking and driving deaths of between 3.6 and 5.6 per cent in the Californian cities where the service is offered. The researchers speculate the cheaper price of Uber and its easy access, compared to regular cabs, make people more likely to call the service when they have been out drinking.”
Uberocracy: How the Sharing Economy Changes Politics
“Uber’s request that drivers keep working in areas where the service is illegal is a sign that they know people want the service. The fact that people keep using the service while it is illegal shows that entrepreneurship outpaces politics. While they are technically engaged in civil disobedience, users likely neither care nor know the legal status of the services. Airbnb hosts rent out their apartments against the terms of their leases. They probably violate some hospitality regulations in their cities. They don’t really care. The experience is so positive that both hosts and users win. What makes this entrepreneurship new is that the barrier to entry is so low for somebody to engage in the exchange.”
Welcome to the Freest Place on Earth
“I drove up early on this late-June Friday, toward the end of the week-long celebration, to find a huge private campground bathed in sunshine. When I got there, groggy campers were shuffling to the toilets, and there only a few signs this was not just a festival but an experiment in a different way of life. One was a custom vending machine someone had stationed on a campsite. Inside were Milk Duds, wet wipes, small plastic bags of ammo in various calibers, pregnancy tests, and Zig-Zag rolling papers. If you wanted to, you could pay with Bitcoin, the anonymous, non-government-issued cybercurrency. PorcFest is an eight-day party for 1,500 people who don’t want the government in their faces.”

Who Is Building the Private, Peer-to-Peer Marketplace?
“Online commerce today is mostly centralized; companies own websites where users visit to buy and sell things. Those companies charge fees, monitor their users’ data, and censor their transactions based on their own rules and on behalf of the government. OpenBazaar is different. Instead of relying on a centralized third party, trades occur directly between buyers and sellers. Users install peer-to-peer software on their computers, similar to bitcoin or BitTorrent, and this connects them to other users running the same software. They transact in bitcoin. Since there’s no middleman, there are no fees, no collection of data, and no censorship of trade.”

Spendable Gold
“The state of Texas has passed a bill to create a gold depository and to create a means for transactions to occur in precious metals. Under the new law, an account holder could use an electronic system to make payments to others who hold accounts. This legislation, if it’s followed through upon, would end the monopoly now held by the Federal Reserve to create money, and end the plan for the banks to totally control money. Any individual who sees the currency debacle coming would be able to withdraw his funds and buy gold. Were this legislation to spread to other states, each state could develop the ability to be economically independent of the central bank.”
Millions in Brazil Follow a Teen Leader to Freedom
“The catalyzing events behind Brazil’s freedom movement are high taxes, massive corruption and cronyism, rising price inflation amid a sluggish economy, and the widely perceived incompetence of President Dilma Rousseff and her socialist-leaning Workers’ Party. It gained significant attention on June 1 when it organized a campaign against taxes that make up 60 percent of the price of beer. And though no political party in Brazil has been committed to liberty since the 19th century, one is now in the making. The Novo (‘New’) Party has gathered the signatures necessary for the next step: certification by the government so it can field candidates in elections.”

The Dark Web Drug Lords Who Got Away
“Despite Ulbricht’s ultimate punishment, the lesson for anyone closely watching the Dark Web drug trade has hardly been one of inevitable consequences. As independent researcher Gwern Branwen has documented in an ongoing survey of more than 70 Dark Web drug markets created after Ulbricht founded the Silk Road, only five of those sites’ administrators have been arrested. For many of the others, the security model Ulbricht pioneered—using Tor and bitcoin to protect administrators, buyers and sellers—has successfully kept law enforcement fumbling in the shadows.”
In a World of Tax Hells, a New Haven Emerges
“I don’t blame you if you’re skeptical. I was too, until I spoke with Vit Jedlicka, the founder and president of Liberland. It’s a slice of land on the edge of Serbia, Croatia, and the Danube River. Neither country has ever claimed it due to a border quirk. Under international law, that opened up the opportunity for Liberland. Surprisingly, the reactions of Croatia and Serbia have been cordial instead of resistant. Vit is in the process of securing diplomatic recognition. More than 300,000 have applied for citizenship. Serious investors have indicated they’d immediately put tens of millions of dollars into the new country. Liberland has real momentum. Soon it could reach a tipping point.”
