Fed Accused Of Sending Nude Selfie To Woman Who Needed Help

“A federal police officer is under investigation for allegedly sending a nude selfie to a woman who had come to him for help.  ‘It’s scary,’ she said, ‘I mean, this is a police officer.’  The picture is almost a full-length nude. He allegedly sent it to the woman’s cell phone.  ‘It’s shocking,’ she said, ‘No one has ever sent me a nude selfie before. Let alone a police officer who I was going to him for help.'”

Miami, Okla., police officers, OHP trooper sued in excessive force case

“McKee pulled Payne from his pickup and ‘violently threw him onto the concrete pavement of the parking lot,’ the lawsuit alleges. Then the trooper grabbed Payne’s left arm, wrenched it behind his back and slammed Payne’s face into the pavement, the complaint alleges.  Lashmet jumped on Payne’s back and pushed his face into the concrete parking lot, according to the complaint. Myers arrived, ran toward Payne, repeatedly kicked him in the face, and then jumped on his back, the complaint alleges.  Payne’s injuries reportedly included broken teeth, a bloody lip, bumps, bruises and scrapes on his face.  Charges were dropped Oct. 21, court records indicate.”

“Pembroke Pines police arrested one of their own officers, after surveillance video captured him stealing a watch, as he investigated a crime at a jewelry store Wednesday.  Nine-year-veteran Kevin Burgs was at Jared’s The Galleria Of Jewelry, 11077 Pines Boulevard, after two suspects took thousands in merchandise from the store Wednesday. Glass was shattered, the watches were at reach.  Surveillance video caught Burgs, as he took a watch valued at nearly $800, police said. He was charged with grand theft and arrested. Early Thursday morning, he posted a $1,000 bond and walked out of jail.”

Distracted police officers cause hundreds of crashes in metro Denver

“On-duty police officers blowing through red lights, driving too fast and smashing into innocent bystanders. An exclusive FOX31 Denver investigation uncovered a widespread pattern of traffic accidents caused by distracted on-duty officers. [..]  Police radio dispatch audio logs, acquired by FOX31 Denver under the Colorado Open Record Act, are void of any request to obtain medical treatment for Tucker on scene.  She says she called the police department a few days later to ask about them paying for her bent bike handle bars and some medical bills she incurred after the accident.  Boulder police sent her a $50 citation in the mail for failing to have a light on her bicycle.”

Salvaging the Post Office: Turn It Into A Bank?

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“This most inefficient of agencies filled with self-loathing employees and merciless unions is now to be specially dedicated to helping poor people with banking services and so-called payday loans. In this article posted at the Huffington Post, Senator Warren indicates that she is going to try to provide the USPS with the opportunity to offer these additional services. The upshot will be predictable, of course. USPS will do to poor people just what it has done to the letter-receiving public … provide ever diminishing services for ever more expensive fees: a panacea neither for USPS nor for the working poor now receiving the services they need from various private-market vendors.”

Argentina mulls benefits cut for dollar buyers

“Argentina’s government is studying the possibility of removing public service subsidies from residents who buy dollars as part of the latest effort to protect the peso after a sharp devaluation last month.  The idea is to strip subsidies that keep the costs of electricity, gas, water and other public services down for those who buy dollars for savings.  ‘It is not fair that we subsidize electricity and gas for those that can save 20 percent of their salaries to buy dollars,’ Fernandez said.  Fernandez said wealthier residents are buying the fewest dollars for savings since it is ‘more profitable’ to invest in other assets, including properties and businesses.”

Firefighters Refuse to Help Dying Man Because He Did Not Call 9-1-1

“Three different rotations of people knocked on the firehouse door requesting help for the 77-year-old, and all of them were rebuffed by the firefighters who repeated to each of them that they couldn’t respond unless someone called 911. Nearly 20 minutes later, help finally arrived thanks D.C. police officer who flagged an ambulance down. Mills died on the way to the hospital.  ‘There are no words to describe how this city has failed,’ his daughter told the Washington Post on Wednesday, prompting District authorities to investigate the 15 firefighters who are now being questioned for their lack of response during a time of emergency.”

Grand jury indicts police officer who killed unarmed man seeking help

“Less than a week after one grand jury declined to charge him, a different one has indicted a Charlotte, N.C., police officer for voluntary manslaughter in the shooting death of an unarmed man who was looking for help after a car crash.  Prosecutors resubmitted the case against Officer Randall Kerrick after learning not all 18 members of the original grand jury were present for last Tuesday’s vote. Kerrick, 28, a three-year veteran of the Charlotte police force, shot Jonathan Ferrell, 24, 10 times in a confrontation in September. Ferrell had crashed his car and staggered for help to a nearby home, where the resident called 911 to report a possible break-in.”

West Virginia residents sickened after exposure to ‘safe’ water

“A week after a tank at a chemical storage site owned by Freedom Industries leaked thousands of gallons of 4-methylcyclohexane-methanol, or MCHM, into the Elk River, contaminating the drinking water of 300,000 West Virginia residents, some say they do not trust the insistence of the Environmental Protection Agency and the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection that water from the river is becoming safe to drink.  Little is known about MCHM, which is used to process coal before it is burned. The EPA has claimed that water containing less than 1 part per million (ppm) of the chemical is safe to drink, but some experts question how that safety threshold was determined.”

Voluntary government checkpoints spark backlash

“A tactic used by the federal government to gather information for anti-drunken and drugged driving programs is coming under criticism in cities around the country.  The tactic involves a subcontractor for the NHTSA that uses off-duty but uniformed police at voluntary roadside checkpoints where motorists are asked on their behavior behind the wheel.  Officers randomly wave motorists over; they are then asked by workers for subcontractor Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation if they will participate in the voluntary survey. However, the mere presence of uniformed officers gives the checkpoints an aura of authority, says a senior staff attorney with the ACLU.”
