Homicide convictions upheld for faith-healer parents whose daughter died

“Wisconsin and more than a dozen other states have protections in place to keep parents who choose prayer over medical attention from being charged with child abuse. The Neumanns’ attorneys maintain that the law protects parents up through the creation of a potentially lethal situation, making the line where faith-healer parents cross over into criminal liability a blurry one.  An Neumann family attorney told the AP that the couple is ‘devastated’ by the decision.  ‘They’re still mourning the loss of this child,’ said Dale Neumann’s defense lawyer Steven L. Miller. ‘From their perspective they felt they were acting in a legal manner.'”

NJ Supreme Court Rules State Can Seek Custody Of Child Without Evidence Of Abuse

“The New Jersey Supreme Court ruled this week that authorities can seek custody of a child, even where there’s no evidence of abuse or neglect. The case involved a divorced Camden County mother of 9-year-old twin girls.  In 2007, she asked New Jersey’s Division of Child Protection and Permanency for help, claiming she was unable to care for the girls who had psychological and developmental disabilities and needed to be placed in residential care. ‘You can turn to the Division for help, but it may come with a cost,’ says Diana Autin, executive director of Statewide Parent Advocacy Network of New Jersey.”

Dodd-Frank Creates A Prebuilt Loan Predicament

“Loans with rates and fees above certain thresholds are supposed to be designated ‘high cost’ by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and thus subject to fewer legal protections. The bureau earlier this year decided to call loans high-cost if they have an annual percentage rate of more than 6.5 percentage points above a national average and 8.5 percentage points for many loans under $50,000. Lenders to manufactured-home buyers say many of their loans would fall into the high-cost category with this regulation, which goes into effect in January. They warn that they won’t make such loans because they carry increased legal risk.”

“Bart Chilton, Commodities Futures Trading Commission commissioner, tells CNBC, ‘I’m not 100% saying we should regulate it, but if anyone is going to, it seems like it’s something we should consider.’  The volatility in prices, he noted, ‘is amazing.’   The CNBC anchors grilled him pretty aggressively but I don’t think he was showing all his cards during the interview. It looks to me like the CFTC is looking at bitcoins very closely.  It was instructive that Chilton was able to provide the penname of the founder of bitcoins, Satoshi Nakamoto, off the top of his head.”

Amsterdam forced Jews to pay rent while in WWII concentration camps

“Amsterdam council has vowed to probe revelations that it forced Jews returning from World War II concentration camps to pay rent arrears, even if their homes had been destroyed or occupied by Nazis. The scandal, involving an unknown number of Jews and non-Jews living in city-owned properties, was uncovered by a young art history student in Amsterdam’s archives.  Less than a quarter of Amsterdam’s Jewish population survived the war, with the Netherlands occupied by the Nazis from 1940 to 1945.  The council even issued fines for late rent payments for homes that were confiscated and occupied by Nazi forces or members of the Dutch collaborationist NSB movement.”

L.A.-area lost hikers may have to pay $160,000 for manhunt after drugs found in their car

“Orange County officials are considering requiring two hikers to pay for a portion — or even all — of a $160,000 search party after a small amount of methamphetamine was found in their car.  Nicolas Cendoya, 19, and Kyndall Jack, 18, got lost while on an Easter Sunday hike in Trabuco Canyon near Los Angeles. With little water, they called authorities to report their status before losing cell phone service.  Now, Cendoya is facing drug charges and officials have yet to decide for what other portion of the search he and Jack will be held accountable.”

A Taxing Choice? PAC Checks May Ease the Pain

Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) told the Times he was motivated to support the Internet sales tax in part by the owners of a local bridal shop, who complained to him that many customers browse in the store, then buy online for a better deal.  Blunt didn’t tell the Times that three other supporters of the Internet sales tax with much deeper pockets than the bridal shop — PACs run by Home Depot, Walmart and Target — each gave $5,000 to his leadership PAC, Rely On Your Beliefs, earlier this year. And Rep. Austin Scott (R-Ga.) who told the Times about a local shop in his state that lost customers looking for better deals on rifle scopes, took $5,000 from Home Depot on March 31.”
