Obama order urges companies to share cybersecurity information

“The order the president signed here encourages the development of central clearinghouses for companies and the government to share data and creation of centers where data can be shared across specific geographic regions. Obama pushed for collaboration between the public and private sectors.  ‘There’s only one way to defend America from these cyber threats, and that is through government and industry working together, sharing appropriate information as true partners,’ he said. Both privacy groups and Silicon Valley companies have said they would oppose the legislation Obama proposed last month unless reforms are first made to the NSA’s surveillance program.”

Senate Report Highlights Cars Vulnerable to DARPA-Funded Hackers

Feds say Bitcoin miner maker Butterfly Labs ran “systematic deception”

“BFL’s offices in Leawood, Kansas (just outside Kansas City) were ‘raided’ by the United States Marshals Service (USMS) last Friday.  Helen Wong, an FTC attorney, told Ars that all three principals had been served with the lawsuit and that no arrests were made. The USMS, she said, was present to ‘keep the peace.’ For the past year, BFL insisted that mere manufacturing delays were to blame for the company’s woes. However, suspicion of active fraud never died down—and only worsened after it came to light that Butterfly Labs’ largest shareholder, Sonny Vleisides, had violated the terms of his probation from a previous lottery scam case.”

Missouri halts investments in Springfield man’s Bitcoin operations

“Secretary of State Jason Kander has halted investment activity associated with in a Springfield resident’s Bitcoin-related businesses, saying in a news release Monday that Kenneth Slaughter used ‘deceptive tactics’ to convince online investors to pay for the development of Bitcoin mining equipment.  Mining is the process of solving complex math problems to gain additional Bitcoins, an unregulated digital currency.  ‘The fact that somebody is selling investments through Bitcoin rather than traditional currency doesn’t change their obligations to investors, and I encourage Missourians to call my office before making any Bitcoin investments,’ Kander said in the release.”

The current, technically interesting, bitcoin fundraising bubble, began when Mastercoin built a way of extending bitcoin’s blockchain so it can do a whole range of new things such as issuing brand new currencies and registering bets or contracts. Mastercoin, Ethereum and MaidSafe are essentially software startups that are pre-funded by selling their new digital currencies in advance.  The question is whether federal regulators will see this as an equity offering or instead something like the pre-sale of a video game.”

They have taken responsibility for lowering interest rates, for maintaining stability of financial institutions, and for buying up government debt to help economies recover from recession.  Now it seems that they have become important in another area, too, in starting to build up holdings of equities. One of the reasons for the move into equities reflects central banks’ efforts to compensate for lost revenue caused by sharp falls in interest rates driven by official institutions’ own efforts to repair the financial crisis.”

Despite fever, CDC cleared Ebola-infected nurse for airline flight

“A federal health official says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention cleared a nurse who has Ebola to fly from Cleveland, Ohio, to Dallas.  CDC spokesman David Daigle says now-infected Amber Joy Vinson spoke with the CDC official responsible for monitoring her health before she boarded the flight Monday.  CBS News reported that Vinson called the CDC several times before flying, saying that she did have a fever with a temperature of 99.5 degrees.  One health official told CBS News that ‘somebody dropped the ball.’  Vinson is the second Dallas nurse to become infected after treating a Liberian man who died of Ebola last week.”

Missouri Sends National Guard Troops Into Ferguson

“In the days since a black teenager was shot to death by a white police officer here on Aug. 9, an array of state and local law enforcement authorities have swerved from one approach to another: taking to the streets in military-style vehicles and riot gear; then turning over power to a State Highway Patrol official who permitted the protests and marched along; then calling again for a curfew.  Early Monday morning, after a new spate of violence, Gov. Jay Nixon said he was bringing in the National Guard.  Scores of people marched peacefully, carrying signs and chanting. Officers herded some into a parking lot, where the police said protest was permitted.”

New Mom Charged With Drug ‘Assault’ on Fetus

“A Tennessee woman is the first to be charged under a new state law that specifically makes it a crime to take drugs while pregnant, calling it ‘assault.’  The law, which just went into effect, allows a woman to be “prosecuted for assault for the illegal use of a narcotic drug while pregnant” if her infant is harmed or addicted to the drug.  Monroe County Sheriff Bill Bivens said he hoped the arrest would deter other pregnant women from drug use.  ‘Hopefully it will send a signal to other women who are pregnant and have a drug problem to seek help. That’s what we want them to do,’ he said. Critics say that the law will hinder drug-addicted pregnant women from getting help and treatment.”
