Bill Bonner: When the Feds Tell You Bend Over…

Bill-Bonner2

“Slaves could practice their own religions. They spoke their own languages. They were free to operate their own businesses. They could make money. Some became slavers – like Jan Jensen, who became Morat Rais, whose son Anthony used the family name Van Salee and moved to New York. With the profits of the white slave trade, he was able to buy a substantial part of what is today Brooklyn.  Some slaves became traders and financiers, buying and selling goods from all over the Mediterranean. At least one amassed a fortune while still a slave. Some, like Miguel de Cervantes and Captain John Smith of the Virginia colony, got away.  Others didn’t want to get away.”

Feds expand hunt for offshore tax evaders

“Federal judges approved special summonses aimed at getting account data and identifying information of American banking clients of Switzerland’s Zurcher Kantonalbank and Bermuda-based N.T. Butterfield & Son, prosecutors said Tuesday.  The two banks, which could not immediately be reached for comment, don’t have U.S. operations. So investigators got authorization to serve the summonses on four U.S. banks and one London-based bank where Zurcher Kantonalbank and N.T. Butterfield maintained correspondent accounts to service U.S. clients. The five include Bank of New York Mellon, Citibank, JPMorgan Chase Bank, HSBC Bank and Bank of America.”

Sex Offenders Have To Pay To Live In Various States Under New Laws

“Officials say $20 of each fee would go to local law enforcement and $30 would go to the state. If offenders don’t pay the annual fee, they face misdemeanor charges.  Snyder said the law brings Michigan in line with neighboring states that require sex offenders to pay for the operating cost of sex offender websites. He said Indiana charges $50 per year, while Illinois and Ohio charge offenders $100 per year.  The state said the move could bring in about $540,000 more in revenue each year.  One of the first bills Snyder signed this session expanded the public sex offender registry to include more people who commit certain crimes against minors, like possessing child pornography.”

International Tax Evasion Crackdown: Slow, Tricky, And Only First Step

“Banks first refused to easily yield up client information, in part because local privacy laws often prohibit that. So the U.S. is negotiating inter-governmental agreements with about 80 jurisdictions, whereby banks submit data to local tax authorities, who then share information with the IRS.   In any case, FATCA is only the first step in eliminating tax evasion, Staples told International Business Times after his presentation. The eventual goal is ‘a multilateral exchange of information framework,’ said Staples. He described that future model as more robust and less U.S.-centric.  That global tax data sharing system could take years to appear.”

A Letter to America from the Son of an American

220px-GenIsaacBrock4

“What about me, the European with American ancestry? When I was a kid, I thought it was great being half American. We used to visit my grandparents, and bring back things like root beer and peanut butter. My mother once made pumpkin pie for me to take to school, and this was something that none of the other kids had ever tasted. I told my friends about how great it was visiting my grandparents and what a great country America is.  Now, things have changed. The banks here have started treating me and my family like criminals and lepers.”

Foreign Tax will affect thousands of Americans living abroad

“As CCTV’s Kristiaan Yeo reports many Americans who are living abroad are now giving up their citizenship due to the upcoming legislation that is forcing them to pay double taxation. Affected Americans are not only divorcing their homeland but even consider the ‘worst threat’ to their families.”

Government Alienates Americans Abroad By Criminalizing the Innocent?

“Jim welcomes Mark Nestmann, President of the Nestmann Group, Ltd.; Marylouise Serrato, Executive Director of American Citizens Abroad; Daniel Küttel, American expatriate living in Bremgarten, Switzerland; and Douglas Benedict, Canadian citizen and retired investment advisor. Daniel and Douglas share personal testimonials as expatriates enduring the overzealous pursuit of a government that has wrongfully identified them as tax evaders. Mark sheds light on the draconian FATCA compliance regulations that have erroneously identified law-abiding citizens as suspects, and Marylouise provides insight into the challenges of Americans who have elected to live abroad.”

Swiss bankers stay home amid US global tax evasion manhunt

“As a US hunt for tax evaders and their accomplices gains momentum, many Swiss bankers are afraid to go abroad for fear of arrest, one business leader said.  ‘In my opinion, some 1,000 Swiss bankers no longer dare to go to the United States, or even travel abroad,’ Martin Naville, the head of the Swiss-American Chamber of Commerce, was quoted as saying.  Swiss banks and industry representatives are increasingly cautioning bankers who have worked with US clients to refrain from travelling outside Switzerland. The long-time tax haven’s banks are believed to have accepted tens of billions of undeclared dollars from US citizens, though they now refuse such money.”

The Top 6 Reasons Why Everyone Needs a Second Passport

“Doug Casey has said over and over that spreading your political risk beyond one jurisdiction is the single most important thing he can recommend today.  Obtaining a second passport and citizenship in another country is a critical part in heeding Doug’s advice.  This is because it’s a fundamental step towards minimizing the political risk of being subjected to the whims of any single government.  The political diversification benefits that come with obtaining a second passport are universal and prudent for anyone in the world to obtain… especially those under a desperate (fiscally or otherwise) government. Here are the top six reasons why everyone needs a second passport.”

Police firing GPS tracking ‘bullets’ at cars during chases

“Police in Iowa and Florida, however, seem to have taken the counsel of Q from the ‘Bond’ movies.  Instead of constantly hurtling after potential madmen, they have found an entirely new method of tracking their cars.  It’s called Starchase. Essentially, it’s a cannon that fires ‘bullets’ that are sticky GPS devices.  CBS 12 offered an example in real life of how it’s done. Iowa state trooper Tim Sieleman seemed rather mesmerized. He told CBS 12: ‘If you had told me 16 years ago that I would have had a cannon on the front of my car, I wouldn’t have believed it.’  The system costs $5,000, and each bullet sets the taxpayer back $500.”
