China’s military makes move into Africa

“China is establishing its first military base in Africa, according to a top U.S. general, providing yet another sign of its growing reach beyond the Asia-Pacific.  ‘They are going to build a base in Djibouti, so that will be their first military location in Africa,’ U.S. Army Gen. David Rodriguez, the commander of U.S. Africa Command, recently told defense reporters.  There has been speculation for years that China might establish a base in Djibouti. Rodriguez told The Hill that China has signed a 10-year contract with the African nation.  The base, he said, would serve as a logistics hub for China to be able to ‘extend their reach.'”

David Stockman, Christmas 2015—–Why There Is No Peace On Earth

“The real threat to peace circa 1990 was that Pax Americana would not go away quietly in the night.  In fact, during the past 25 years Imperial Washington has lost all memory that peace was ever possible at the end of the cold war. Today it is as feckless, misguided and bloodthirsty as were Berlin, Paris, St. Petersburg, Vienna and London in August 1914.  The modern Warfare State has been the incubator of American imperialism since the Cold War, and is now proving itself utterly invulnerable to fiscal containment, even in the face of a $19 trillion national debt.  So 101 years after the Christmas truces along the Western Front there is still no peace on earth.”

Bill Bonner: The Curse of Lawrence of Arabia [2002]

Bill-Bonner2

In 1919, Thomas went on a lecture tour in the United Kingdom and United States, showing pictures of Lawrence posing in a sheikh’s robes in a London studio, and entranced audiences with stories about the ‘White King of the Arabs.’ By the time the Treaty of Sèvres was negotiated in 1920, with Lawrence in attendance and the media mob hanging on his every word, the British felt compelled to keep Lawrence’s promise to the chieftains of an Arab tribe called the Hashemites.  The political structure of the Middle East today is the result of that promise. The Treaty of Sèvres permitted the British to seize pieces of the Ottoman Empire, which had ruled the Middle East for centuries.”

Seymour M. Hersh on US intelligence sharing in the Syrian war

“The Joint Chiefs felt that a direct challenge to Obama’s policy would have ‘had a zero chance of success’. So in the autumn of 2013 they decided to take steps against the extremists without going through political channels, by providing US intelligence to the militaries of other nations, on the understanding that it would be passed on to the Syrian army and used against the common enemy, Jabhat al-Nusra and Islamic State. Once the flow of US intelligence began, Germany, Israel and Russia started passing on information about the whereabouts and intent of radical jihadist groups to the Syrian army; in return, Syria provided information about its own capabilities and intentions.”

US military provided Assad with intel on CIA-supported extremists

“The Pentagon’s Joint Chiefs of Staff has been indirectly providing Syrian military with intelligence on Islamic extremists fearing the Obama administration’s agenda to oust Bashar Assad will engender total chaos in Syria.  A new investigation in the London Review of Books by renowned American journalist Seymour M. Hersh exposes the divide between the US top brass and the politicians in the White House when it comes to dealing with Islamic extremists in Syria and Iraq.  It seems the US JCS isn’t enthusiastic about Obama’s ‘Assad must go’ maxima, opting to provide Damascus with intelligence and analytics on the jihadists instead. This is, however, done indirectly.”

Oil and the ISIS: Another US-NATO War on Libya is Imminent

“Despite Libyan officials rejecting a US-led bombing campaign and/or ground operation, reports indicate plans to deploy about 1,000 UK special forces on the pretext of combating ISIS – to be joined by thousands more American, French and Italian combat troops.  On Monday, Britain’s Daily Mirror headlined ‘SAS (special forces) spearhead coalition offensive to halt Islamic State oil snatches in Libya,’ saying: ‘The (pretext) is to halt the advance of 5,000 (ISIS) extremists who have seized more than a dozen major oil fields, boosting their war coffers’ – aiming to capture ‘Libya’s prize oil refinery at Marsa al Brega,’ North Africa’s largest, located between Sirte and Benghazi.”

Obama administration authorizes $1.83-billion arms sale to Taiwan

“The Obama administration formally notified Congress on Wednesday of a $1.83-billion arms sale package for Taiwan, including two frigates, anti-tank missiles, amphibious assault vehicles and other equipment, drawing an angry response from China.  The authorization, which Reuters on Monday reported was imminent, came a year after Congress passed legislation approving the sale. It is the first such major arms sale to Taiwan in more than four years.  The White House said there was no change in the longstanding U.S. ‘one China’ policy.  Past U.S. weapons sales to Taiwan have attracted strong condemnation in China, which considers Taiwan a renegade province.”

Hillary Emails Reveal Propaganda, Executions, Coveting Libyan Oil and Gold

“Historians of the 2011 NATO war in Libya will be sure to notice a few of the truly explosive confirmations contained in the new emails: admissions of rebel war crimes, special ops trainers inside Libya from nearly the start of protests, Al Qaeda embedded in the U.S. backed opposition, Western nations jockeying for access to Libyan oil, the nefarious origins of the absurd Viagra mass rape claim, and concern over Gaddafi’s gold and silver reserves threatening European currency.”

$10 trillion IPO plan for Saudi Aramco confirmed

“Saudi Arabian Oil Co., or Aramco, the world’s largest oil producer, said on Friday that it is considering an initial public offering. It confirmed an interview with Deputy Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman published in the Economist Thursday.  The company could be worth anything from $1 trillion (€910bn) to upwards of $10 trillion, which would make it the most valuable company in the world, according to research firm Capital Economics. The last mega IPO from the oil industry was a decade ago, when Russia’s OAO Rosneft raised more than $10bn.  Even if Saudi Arabia sells a small stake, a listing could easily surpass that of Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. whose $25bn IPO is the largest on record.”
