China’s new $16bn gold fund at centre of new ‘Silk Road’

“Gold prices could be boosted by China’s plan to establish a $16bn (£10bn) fund to stockpile the precious metal as part of a scheme known as the ‘Silk Road’ initiative aimed at boosting trade. State endorsed media in China has reported that the new fund Shandong Gold Group and Shaanxi Gold Group will each take stakes of 35pc and 25pc respectively in the new fund alongside other investors. The new entity, which may include an exchange traded fund for gold and investments in miners of the precious metal, aims to raise the $16bn in three tranches, according to the report. China is the largest gold producer and consumer of the precious metal.”

US warns China not to challenge military flights over South China Sea

“The U.S. warned China Thursday against confronting U.S. aerial patrols over the South China Sea days after a verbal dispute between a Chinese military dispatcher and a U.S. Navy surveillance aircraft.  The Los Angeles Times reported that the Navy released two videos and an audio recording of the confrontation, which took place on Wednesday when the Chinese dispatcher demanded eight times that the Navy P8-A Poseidon leave the area as it flew over Fiery Cross Reef in the Spratly Island chain, where China has conducted extensive reclamation work.  China claims virtually the entire South China Sea as its own, along with its scattered island groups.”

U.S. Mulls Military Deployment To South China Sea

“The Pentagon is considering sending U.S. military aircraft and ships to assert freedom of navigation around rapidly growing Chinese-made artificial islands in the disputed South China Sea, a U.S. official said on Tuesday.  Defense Secretary Ash Carter requested options that include sending aircraft and ships within 12 nautical miles (22 km) of reefs that China has been building up in the Spratly island chain, the official said.  Such a move would directly challenge Chinese efforts to expand its influence in the maritime heart of Southeast Asia.  Beijing claims sovereignty over most of the South China Sea, through which $5 trillion in ship-borne trade passes every year.”

Thousands of pro-govt protesters rally for Macedonian PM

“Tens of thousands of demonstrators came together to show their support for Macedonian Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski on Monday. The rally follows mass anti-government protests, whose opponents claim are being funded and instigated from abroad. If Gruevski does not resign, ‘Macedonia will face a war, just like Ukraine,’ Opposition Social Democrat leader Zoran Zaev threatened over the weekend, as quoted by RIA Novosti. Back in February, Zaev released illegally gathered wiretaps which allegedly exposed the government in breaking democratic rules. The prime minister refuted the allegations, saying the tapes had been doctored.”

China’s new playground: America’s backyard

China is moving into the United States’ backyard—but it’s not clear if this is a bad thing for anyone.  Beijing is directing an increasing amount investment into Latin America, raising sphere-of-influence worries in the U.S. and trepidation among some local enterprises. China’s involvement in Latin America can be seen as an extension of its 1999 Go Out policy, which said the country should invest abroad to secure access to natural resources, gain new markets for exports and internationalize Chinese firms. Despite this open strategy—Beijing explicitly addressed its interest in Latin America in a 2011 white paper—the growth of China’s involvement in the region has taken many by surprise.”

US Bid to Contain Russia and Latin America Speeds New Alliances

“Economist Ariel Noyola Rodriguez notes that US attempts to contain emerging economies including Russia and the countries of Latin America work only to hasten these nations’ efforts to create a new, truly multipolar world order independent of Washington’s influence.  The economist argues that the Eurasian Union project and Latin America’s  Mercosur complement each other, serving as ‘a crucial mechanism in the defense of sovereignty and the development of a multipolar world order.’  The two economic blocs have a combined territory of 33 million square kilometers, a population of nearly 450 million, and a combined GDP of 8.5 trillion dollars, or 11.6% of nominal global GDP.”

Ukraine Security Chief Blasted for Targeting Jews

“Eduard Dolinsky, the director of the Ukrainian Jewish Committee, made the accusation on Facebook against Valentyn Nalyvaichenko, head of the Security Service of Ukraine, after Nalyvaichenko said his organization needed to base its work on the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, or UPA, which murdered thousands of Jews in the 1940s.  Dolinsky also said that  the security service under Nalyvaichenko published a list ‘that consisted entirely of Jewish surnames’ of people allegedly responsible for the famine that killed millions in Ukraine in the 1930s.  Earlier this month, the Ukrainian Parliament passed a bill that opened the door to state recognition of UPA, previously a taboo because of  widespread war crimes.”

Russia and Greece to ink Turkish Stream gas pipeline deal

“Russia and Greece are to sign a memorandum of cooperation on the construction of a new pipeline in the Turkish Stream project which will deliver Russian gas to Europe via Greece, according to the Greek energy minister.  The minister said that Athens expected to ‘receive significant financial dividends for the pipeline’s operations,’ and that the pipeline will bring ‘extremely important profits to Greece, first of all, cheaper gas.’ Currently Russian gas covers 66 percent of Greece’s energy needs.  The Turkish Stream gas pipeline could help Greece become one of the main energy distribution centers in Europe, Russian President Vladimir Putin said during his meeting with the Greek delegation.”

Greece demands €278bn WWII reparations from Germany

“Germany owes Greece no less than €278.7 billion in World War II reparations, Athens said, referring to the destruction wrought upon the nation during the Nazi occupation. The sum exceeds Greece’s total debt of €240 billion to the EU.  The figure was calculated by a parliamentary committee and the Greek supreme court.  In response, Gabriel Sigmar, Germany’s economy minister and vice chancellor, described Greece’s demand as ‘stupid.’ Many Greeks blame Germany, as the country’s biggest creditor, for the tough austerity measures and record high unemployment it faced after getting two international bailouts total worth 240 billion euros.”
