China signs currency swap deal with Qatar, in heart of the petro-dollar

“The petro-dollar system is the heart and soul of America’s domination over the global reserve currency, and their right to make all nations have to purchase U.S. dollars to be able to buy oil in the open market. Bound through an agreement with Saudi Arabia and OPEC in 1973, this de facto standard has lasted for over 41 years and has been the driving force behind America’s economic, political, and military power.  But on Nov. 3 a new chink in the petro-dollar system was forged as China signed an agreement with Qatar to begin direct currency swaps between the two nations using the Yuan, and establishing the foundation for new direct trade with the OPEC nation.”

Russian Stocks Now Cheaper Than Ever as Oil Rout Deepens

“Central bank data show net outflows from Russian assets totaled $75 billion in the first half, compared with $61 billion in all of 2013. The ruble has weakened 19 percent against the dollar this year, the second-worst performance among emerging-market currencies. ‘The market got smashed down for absurd reasons so reality is now setting in to the value there,’ Jim Rogers, who set up Quantum Fund with George Soros in the 1970s, said by e-mail from Singapore yesterday. Rogers, who said he has been bearish on the former Soviet nation for most of the time he’s been investing, said Oct. 1 that he has bought Russian ETFs and local stocks, including OAO Aeroflot and OAO Moscow Exchange.”

Who’s Funding ISIS? Wealthy Gulf ‘Angel Investors,’ Officials Say

“A small but steady flow of money to ISIS from rich individuals in the Gulf continues, say current and former U.S. officials, with Qataris the biggest suppliers. These rich individuals have long served as ‘angel investors,’ as one expert put it, for the most violent militants in the region, providing the ‘seed money’ that helped launch ISIS and other jihadi groups. The U.S. believes ISIS is taking in about $1 million a day from all sources. The largest source of cash now, say U.S. officials, is oil smuggling along the Turkish border, with ISIS leaders willing to sell oil from conquered Syrian and Iraqi fields for as little as $25 a barrel, a quarter of the going world price.”

Jim Rogers says Korea to unify within 5 years

“I wanted to go to Rason because that is where the Russians just rebuilt the railroad across Siberia into Rason and that is where they are rebuilding the port. Rason is going to become the most important port in Asia in the next decade or two. If you put goods on the train in Rason, they get to Berlin two weeks earlier [than the current alternative]. Putin knows this, the Koreans know this, the Chinese just put in a railroad across China and Kazakhstan to get things to Europe much faster so geography is changing as we speak. You wouldn’t know it if you watch (American TV).  I went to the market, you could get anything. Stuff that I don’t even have myself.”

Go East, Canadian Crude

“Canada’s west coast should be the point of departure for liquefied natural gas (LNG) and crude oil destined for Asia. But given the ongoing political clown show in British Columbia, Alberta-based producers are starting to look east as well.  Earlier this week Canadian oil major Suncor Energy Inc transported 700,000 barrels of Western Canada Select (WCS) crude by rail to a port near Montreal. From there, it will be shipped to Italy, via the Saint Lawrence River, which ultimately connects with the Atlantic Ocean. Next month, Enbridge Inc is expected to complete the reversal of its Line 9B pipeline, bringing up to 300,000 more barrels a day to the Saint Lawrence.”

Ukraine’s ‘Romantic’ Nazi Storm Troopers

“The U.S. mainstream media’s deeply biased coverage of the Ukraine crisis – endlessly portraying the U.S.-backed  coup regime in Kiev as ‘the good guys’ – reached a new level of absurdity over the weekend as the Washington Post excused the appearance of Swastikas and other Nazi symbols among a Ukrainian government militia as ‘romantic.’ The article finds nothing objectionable about Azov’s plans for ‘sabotage, targeted assassinations and other insurgent tactics’ against Russians, although such actions are often regarded as terrorism. For the first time since World War II, a government had dispatched Nazi storm troopers to attack a European population.”

Scotland votes to remain part of United Kingdom

“North Sea oil revenues, Britain’s nuclear weapons program and the use of the pound sterling would have all been on the line, along with dozens of other questions as the two sides divided this island along a border that has hardly functioned like one since 1707.  Scotland already has its own parliament, with responsibility for managing the nation’s health care, education and legal systems.  Nationalists said an independent Scotland, unshackled from London’s austerity-minded Conservative-led government, would have been modeled on Scandinavian countries that spread their wealth broadly and offer their citizens a generous package of government support.”

Scottish independence: big government and the five magic words

“The Scottish independence referendum has just concluded, and the first glance shows that the ‘No’ vote – that committed to remaining part of the United Kingdom – will pass by a few percentage points.  Ever since the Scottish Parliament decided to hold such an independence referendum five years ago, most of the world thought they were barking mad.  Few gave the movement much credibility until recent polls came out suggesting Scottish secession just might be a plausible reality.  In fact, results now show that a majority of those voting in the city of Glasgow indeed did vote for secession from London, a slap in the face to the centuries-old union between the two home countries.”

Ukraine ratifies E.U. pact but backs expanded autonomy in rebel areas

“Ukraine’s parliament ratified an agreement Tuesday to deepen economic and political ties with the European Union, moving ahead with a plan that sparked an uprising by pro-Russian rebels and led to Moscow’s annexation of the Crimea peninsula.  But in a move seeking to ease tensions, Ukrainian lawmakers also passed legislation to grant greater autonomy to eastern Ukraine. It’s part of a wider peace deal seeking to end a conflict that has claimed more than 2,600 lives and sharply escalated tensions between Russia and the West.  The E.U. must now take steps to formalize the association with Ukraine, which would deepen economic and political ties with the 27-nation bloc.”
