Russia Mulls ‘Limitations’ On FATCA Information Exchange With U.S.

“The Russian government may place ‘limitations’ on the amount of information that Russian banks can render to U.S. tax authorities under FATCA, a U.S. federal law intended to crack down on tax avoidance by U.S. citizens, Deputy Finance Minister Alexei Moiseyev said Thursday.  Moiseyev told journalists in St. Petersburg that Russia will not become ‘tax agents for the Americans, that will not happen under any circumstances,’ Interfax reported.  The U.S. in April quit negotiations with Russia over FATCA as part of a freeze on political cooperation following Russia’s annexation of Crimea in March, leaving the Russian government scrambling to adapt its laws to the legislation by July 1.”

That Was the GDR – A History of the Other Germany (1993)

“This astonishing chronicle of the German Democratic Republic (or as we called it, East Germany) features illuminating interviews complimented by rare archival materials from film, photographs, posters, caricatures, popular songs and speeches. Former citizens both prominent and unknown reflect on cultural, economic, and political developments from the founding of the GDR in 1949 to German unification in 1990. This is the ultimate film history of events such as the suppression of the Prague Spring in 1968, the rise and fall of the Berlin Wall, economic stagnation, Stasi activity, and the popular upheavals that finally brought down the state.”

Russia and Mongolia Mull Creation of Free Trade Zone

“Russia and Mongolia could sign a free trade agreement and create transport infrastructure between the Customs Union, Mongolia, and China, Russian’s Economic Development Ministry said in an online statement.  During talks between Russian Economic Development Minister Alexei Ulyukayev and his Mongolian counterpart, Nyamzhava Batbayara, the supply of energy between Russia, Mongolia and China was also identified as an area of potential cooperation, according to Thursday’s statement. Ukyukayev suggested that investments in bilateral trade would facilitate the creation of a free trade zone with the Customs Union and Mongolia, the statement said.”

Paul Craig Roberts: Why War Is Inevitable

withkitties_150_120

“President George W. Bush’s repeal of the Constitution has been expanded by President Obama and codified by Congress and executive orders into law. Far from defending our liberties, our soldiers who died in “the war on terror” died so that the president can indefinitely detain US citizens without due process of law and murder US citizens on suspicion alone without any accountability to law or the Constitution.  The conclusion is unavoidable that America’s wars have not protected our liberty but, instead, destroyed liberty. As Alexander Solzhenitsyn said, ‘A state of war only serves as an excuse for domestic tyranny.'”

South Africa Families Queue for Food as Strike Continues

“Thousands of people have received food-aid parcels in South Africa’s platinum belt, where a strike has crippled output at mines owned by the three biggest producers for almost 18 weeks and left many starving.  About 12,000 people have benefited from packs of corn, rice, beans and bread distributed in the Rustenburg area, where many of the nation’s platinum mines are located.  Employees don’t get paid when on strike in South Africa, which produces about 70 percent of mined platinum. The workers have forfeited 8.5 billion rand ($818 million) in wages, while the companies have lost 19 billion rand in revenue, the producers said on a joint website.”

The US Imperium, Coming Dollar Difficulties and Investing Abroad

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“I like gold, foreign securities, unique startup situations and IPOs and even mining stocks, although I’m not convinced mining shares will do well because there are now so many other precious metal alternatives. As I said earlier, I believe big money will likely be made by early investors into the exciting new cannabis startups and IPOs. But diversify any investment in this area among a number of companies because many will fail and only a few will do well. Once again, although there are real medical benefits from cannabis use, the government policy change is primarily because they need the revenue at all levels of government.”

U.S. air base in pro-Moscow Kyrgyzstan will be abandoned

“A U.S. Air Force base in Kyrgyzstan is packing up for closure after more than 12 years of flying troops and cargo in and out of Afghanistan, as Moscow boosts its military clout in the strategic region.  The Manas Transit Center in the ex-Soviet nation’s main civilian airport has been in operation since the end of 2001, serving the U.S.-led war in Afghanistan codenamed Operation Enduring Freedom.  As Kyrgyzstan seeks closer political ties and economic aid from its ex-Soviet overlord Russia, the national parliament last June gave Washington until July 2014 to close its base.”

Russia And China Sign Historic $400 Billion “Holy Grail” Gas Deal

logo3

“Russia’s Gazprom and China’s CNPC announced, that after a decade of negotiations, the two nations signed a 30 year gas contract amounting to around $400 billion. And with the west doing all it can to alienate Russia and to force it into China’s embrace, this is merely the beginning of what will be a far closer commercial (and political) relationship between China and Russia.  So far there have been no public pricing details on the deal which accrording to Gazprom CEO Aleksey Miller is a ‘commercial secret’, and which is believed to involve Russia supplying 38 billion cubic metres of gas per year to China via a new eastern pipeline linking the countries.”

Oil Nations Put Out Welcome Mat for Western Companies

“For years, Mexico, Iran, Iraq, Algeria and Libya—most of them among the top 10 producers world-wide—were fiercely nationalistic when it came to oil. They either offered Western companies punitive terms to develop their reserves or didn’t do business with them at all, controlling their supplies tightly with state-owned companies.  Now, facing a range of problems, these nations are offering Western companies generous deals to win their help.   In Iran, Libya and Algeria, the population is addicted to low energy prices and high oil-funded social spending. All of that is in jeopardy as countries struggle to boost production—and new revenue is needed to quell potential unrest.”
