Feds, Anaheim Try to Seize $1.5M Building . . . With No Charges Against the Owner

“Anaheim small business owner Tony Jalali faces the loss of his office building, which is worth $1.5 million, even though he has committed no crime. The city of Anaheim is colluding with federal prosecutors to do an end-run around state laws to take away Jalali’s building because he rented space to medical marijuana dispensaries, even though they operated legally under California law.  Jalali is fighting back. Represented by the Institute for Justice, he is challenging the constitutionality of the taking of his land to put an end to the civil forfeiture in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California in Santa Ana, Calif.”

Senate bill would offer college students the same interest rates as banks

“Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) introduced a bill on Wednesday that would give college students the same interest rates on their federal student loans as banks do when borrowing from the Federal Reserve. ‘If the Federal Reserve can float trillions of dollars to large financial institutions at low interest rates to grow the economy, surely they can float the Department of Education the money to fund our students, keep us competitive, and grow our middle class,’ Warren said.  The Student Loan Fairness Act would call for the Fed to ‘float the money’ to the department for one year, giving Congress enough time to enact a long-term agreement on student loan rates.”

Man trampled as hundreds of desperate Greeks scuffle for food

“A fruit and vegetable handout in Greece led to one man being trampled on Wednesday, calling attention to desperate conditions. Some 55 tons of produce was given away by farmers who were protesting high production costs.  The chaos was sparked when food stalls ran out of fruits and vegetables, prompting dozens of people to rush to a nearby truck.  It was an ‘every man for himself’ situation as the Greeks shoved their way to the front of the truck, competing for the food that was left. The 55 tons of food was completely gone in under two hours.  A Reuters employee at the scene was hit on the head with cauliflower heads as he attempted to photograph the situation.”

Argentina Deploys Troops To Contain Looting

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/OB-VT827_1221ar_D_201212211146531.jpg

“What started with the ouster Thursday afternoon of a supermarket in the Patagonian resort town of Bariloche quickly spread to other parts of the country, with thousands of looters attacking supermarkets and shops in the cities of Rosario, Campana and Zárate. In the central city Rosario, two people were killed during the incidents and 137 people arrested.  The Kirchner administration deployed 400 federal agents Thursday night at the request of Río Negro Province’s governor to help restore order in Bariloche after inhabitants of a shantytown looted at least one supermarket and attacked several other supermarkets and shops.”

Crooks steal $1.5M in iPads from JFK

“It beats waiting in line at an Apple Store.  A pair of brazen crooks punched another hole in the lax JFK security when they stole a trove of new Apple iPad minis — worth $1.5 million — from the same cargo building that was the site of the 1978 Lufthansa heist featured in ‘GoodFellas,’ The Post has learned. The crooks struck shortly before midnight on Monday and used one of the airport’s own forklifts to load two pallets of the tablet computers into a truck, according to law-enforcement sources.”
