“Savers who stash money in offshore accounts are more likely to be prosecuted under government plans to get tough on tax evasion. The Treasury unveiled plans last night to simplify laws and make it a criminal offence for Britons to hold undeclared income overseas. Currently, HM Revenue & Customs can only secure a conviction if it can prove that an individual was trying to hide money from the authorities. But George Osborne will shift the ‘burden of proof’, meaning that accused individuals under investigation must demonstrate that this was not the case. Convicted criminals will pay a hefty fine or face jail under the plans.”

California D.A. Pockets Elderly Couple’s $500,000 Bail Bond Money
A recent story from ABC News, which documents a San Francisco landlord’s allegedly outrageous and abusive behavior towards his tenants and his subsequent attempted flight from the U.S. to evade the resulting criminal charges, nearly completely obscured its own documentation of another blatantly criminal act — this time of the government itself — mentioning it only on the second page and in passing.
H-P Pays $108M to DOJ, SEC To Settle Anti-Bribery Allegations
“Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) agreed to pay $108 million to settle federal claims that it violated the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, marking yet another major settlement as the government cracks down on bribery. The government alleges H-P violated FCPA when its subsidiaries in Poland, Mexico and Russia made improper payments to government officials to obtain or retain public contracts. The PC maker agreed to pay $108 million to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and Dept. of Justice, and undertake certain compliance, reporting and cooperation obligations.”
€250,000 strapped to German pensioner’s genitals seized at border
“An elderly man has been found apparently trying to smuggle nearly €250,000 strapped to his genitals. He and his wife were stopped during a routine check on the border near Trier, Germany, which is close to the boundary with Luxembourg. His wife also had €8,000 strapped in her clothing. Customs officers based in Koblenz discovered four bundles of cash worth €50,000 each and another of €44,900 strapped to the man’s genitalia, according to The Local. European laws state that anyone carrying more than €10,000 must declare the money and they now face a large fine.”

“When it comes to taxes, your chances of being audited by the IRS vary wildly depending upon your income. How do you avoid red flags that could increase your chances of getting an audit notice in the mail?”
Soc. Security, Treasury target taxpayers for parents’ decades-old debts
“Hundreds of thousands of taxpayers who are expecting refunds this month are instead getting letters like the one Grice got, informing them that because of a debt they never knew about — often a debt incurred by their parents — the government has confiscated their check. The Treasury Department has intercepted $1.9 billion in tax refunds already this year — $75 million of that on debts delinquent for more than 10 years. The aggressive effort to collect old debts started three years ago — the result of a single sentence tucked into the farm bill lifting the 10-year statute of limitations on old debts to Uncle Sam. No one seems eager to take credit for reopening all these long-closed cases.”
S.F. SmartCar-Tippers Rage Against the Machine
“A group of as many as eight people dressed in black tipped over four of the cars in a San Francisco residential area this week. Vandals have been tipping Smart cars in other cities throughout the country. There’s speculation that the car tipping could be linked to the anti-tech industry movement that’s been growing in the Bay Area. Protesters have hampered Google’s shuttles as they have tried to take employees to work. They have demonstrated outside Twitter’s headquarters against the tax breaks it gets from the city.”
Protesters block another Google bus, plan march against evictions
“Dozens of protesters in San Francisco blocked a bus headed for Google headquarters this morning and dozens more are expected during a march this afternoon to rally against the evictions of local teachers and other longtime city residents. Attendees heard from longtime residents of a building at 812 Guerrero St. who are being evicted under the Ellis Act, a state law that allows property owners to take a building off of the rental market and convert it for other uses, such as condominiums or a single-family home. The building was recently purchased by a Google employee who ‘proceeded to evict tenants using illegal methods,’ according to a statement from Eviction Free San Francisco.”

Airbnb Pressured Into Starting To Collect Hotel Taxes In San Francisco
“Airbnb said it will start collecting San Francisco’s 14 percent hotel tax on behalf of hosts today. The move counters critics who’ve claimed that the company has willfully dodged taxes to get ahead of traditional competitors in the hotel industry. But as Airbnb has grown up and is now poised to command a possible $10 billion valuation from private investors, they’ve said they want to play by city rules. The move follows the company’s announcement last week that it had reached a partnership with the city of Portland to pay transient lodging taxes, work with the city’s tourism bureau and offer guests the chance to donate to local causes.”
Collectivists Posing As “Anarchists” Demand $3 Billion From Google
“A group of anti-capitalist protesters referring to themselves as ‘anarchists’ demonstrated outside the home of Digg founder and Google Ventures partner Kevin Rose on Sunday, and demanded that Google hand over $3 billion to fund the creation of ‘autonomous, anti-capitalist, and anti-racist communities throughout the Bay Area and Northern California.’ The protest was allegedly organized by a group called The Counterforce, and they call Rose a ‘meta-leech’ who is to blame for the rising cost of living in the Bay Area. Rose has invested heavily in several tech startups, and these startups have moved to the Bay Area to run their businesses.”
