The government calls for more subprime lending—then prosecutes it

“President Obama himself has urged banks to ease lending standards so more people can buy cars and homes. Yet subprime loans carry a stigma because of abuses that occurred during the housing bubble of the early 2000s.  The government is sending mixed messages to banks and consumers. Tight credit has been one of the things holding back spending, prompting Obama and other policymakers to plead for looser lending standards. Yet the government is now threatening to punish banks that lend to less creditworthy consumers. If subprime loans were called second-chance loans or opportunity loans instead, maybe prosecutors would show less interest.”

Iraq: The ‘Humanitarian Catastrophe’ That Petered Out

antiwar_logo4

“Even as the professional sob sisters of the War Party were demanding US military action to ‘save’ the Yazidis – an obscure Iraqi religious sect whose historic home on Mount Sinjar, in Kurdistan, was ringed with ISIS jihadis – the Pentagon was saying: ‘Never mind …‘:  ‘Several thousand Yazidis remain on the mountain, a senior United States official said, but not the tens of thousands who originally were believed to be there. Some of the people who remain on Mount Sinjar indicated to American forces that they considered the mountain to be a place of refuge and a home, and did not want to leave, a second United States official said.'”

US ramps up Iraq air strikes in support of Kurdish attack on key dam

“A statement from US Central Command said 14 strikes had been carried out on Sunday, ‘to support humanitarian efforts in Iraq, and support Iraqi security forces and Kurdish defence forces’. Isis fighters around the Mosul dam and the Kurdish capital of Irbil were hit nine times on Saturday.  ‘US military forces continued to attack [Isis] terrorists in Iraq Sunday,’ the statement said, ‘using a mix of fighter, bomber, attack and remotely piloted aircraft to successfully conduct air strikes near the Mosul dam.’  The statement said the 14 strikes damaged or destroyed ’10 armed vehicles, seven Humvees, two armoured personnel carriers, and one checkpoint’.”

And the Credit for Defeating Slavery in America Goes to… Criminals!

“If you’re like me, you learned in school that the slaves of the old American South were freed by Abraham Lincoln, or at least by the central government of the United States.  But as I dug through the facts about slavery in the South, I found the same pattern that I’ve seen over and over when I examined historical turns for the better: that the true benefactors were opposed and punished.  The people who did the actual work to end slavery were regarded as criminals by every level of the United States government, from Congress and the Supreme Court, down to the local sheriff. The laws of the United States enforced slavery, and powerfully so.”

4 Things You Should Know About Mass Incarceration

“Today’s total American prison population exceeds the estimated amount of citizens detained within the Gulag system under the former Soviet Union. If we include those sentenced but not yet incarcerated, as well as those released upon probation and parole, there are more young black men embroiled in the American criminal justice system than were estimated to be enslaved in America circa 1850. These statistics are not to say that the United States is totalitarian, or based on chattel labor. Instead, these numbers emphasize that, insofar as despotism requires enforcement, our own government is more than capable of imposing serious and pervasive social control.”

Justin Raimondo: Sneaking Back Into Iraq

“Yes, folks, it’s another ‘humanitarian disaster’ staring us in the face – and, we’re being told, we have little choice but to go in and save the day. We’ve already sent in hundreds of Special Forces to ‘advise’ the nearly nonexistent Iraqi army we spent billions arming and training. The military infrastructure is there, ready and waiting.  So what should we do to help Iraq stave off an invasion by ISIS, which is now holding some 40,000 Yazidis in the northern part of the country?  The answer is: nothing. Not every problem has a solution. Not every mistake – in this case the mistake of invading Iraq in the first place – can be rectified.”

Ohio University Considers Mandatory Re-Education Classes For Smokers

“Officials at Ohio University are considering mandatory classes for students who get caught smoking on campus as part of a draconian ban on smoking for the upcoming 2015-2016 academic year.  The ban will outlaw every use of cigarettes and e-cigarettes on any part of the 1,850-acre public university campus, reports The Athens News, the local newspaper.  Smokers won’t be able to take refuge in any designated smoking areas, either. The ban is utter and total.  Smoking bans are all the rage at colleges and universities across the country. This year, The College Fix notes, Ohio State, San Diego State and every public college in Georgia have instituted such bans.”

Not Worth a Continental

“There are many paths by which political leaders may destroy a country’s economy through hyperinflation. But those leaders who follow the standard checklist of the most common components to collapse can generally be assured that the economy will be destroyed.  War (Can be one major war, or, as in today’s world, perpetual small wars); Depletion of gold reserves;  Excessive Debt (Create a debt level that is beyond the ability to repay);  Devaluation of currency (Print massive amounts of currency to diminish debt);  Loss of control of inflation (Inflation morphs into hyperinflation—a state in which citizens actively try to rid themselves of the currency, as it is devaluating so quickly.)”

Bill Bonner: The Fed’s Next Move

Bill-Bonner2

“Janet Yellen is being pushed into a corner by the Fed’s own pronunciamientos. It has been threatening to raise interest rates when its inflation and employment targets are hit. And hit they have been. So what’s she gonna do?  Our guess is she means what she says. She is a smart woman. But she is not smart enough to see that she has been talking claptrap… and not courageous enough to admit that her career is built on it.  If she sees any sign the ‘recovery’ has been put in danger by her attempts to normalize interest rates… she will back up. That is the history of the last seven years of Fed policy… and it is probably the best guide to the months ahead.”

To Sell A War [1992]

“Aired in December 1992 as part of CBC programme the fifth estate. The programme was directed by Martyn Gregory and produced by Neil Docherty.  It exposes the Citizens for a Free Kuwait campaign as public relations spin to gain public opinion support for the Gulf War. As well, it reveals that Nurse Nayirah was in fact Nijirah al-Sabah, the daughter of Kuwait’s ambassador to the United States Saud Nasir Al-Sabah, coached by Hill & Knowlton to forge her infamous testimony about Iraqi soldiers removing babies from incubators, which was widely reported and repeated throughout the media.”
