“The president is right to be upset over the mistreatment of US military veterans, especially those who return home with so many physical and mental injuries. But his outrage over military abuse is selective. He ignores the most egregious abuse of the US armed forces: sending them off to fight, become maimed and die in endless conflicts overseas that have no connection to US national security.  It is ironic that the same week the president condemned the alleged mistreatment of veterans by the VA, he announced that he was sending 80 armed troops to Chad to help look for a group of girls kidnapped by the Nigerian Islamist organization Boko Haram.”

John Kerry Responds To Military Coup In Thailand

The U.S. national-security state loves military dictatorships for the precise reason given by Thailand’s military dictators as the justification for their coup: establishing order and stability within the country.  U.S. officials, especially those in the Pentagon and CIA, believe in this way of life. They build up military dictatorships. They install them into power. They support them. They partner with them.”

Russia moves to make failure to declare dual citizenship a crime

“Parliament approved legislation on Tuesday requiring Russians to declare dual citizenship or face criminal prosecution.  The bill will impose a fine of up to 200,000 rubles ($5,800) or 400 hours of community service on Russians who have citizenship in another country and fail to tell the authorities.  Critics said the law would place people with two passports under suspicion and expressed fear its aim was to whip up nationalist fervor by hinting dissenters are in the service of foreign governments.  The law includes an exemption for Russians with dual citizenship who live abroad and for residents of Crimea, where Russia is busily issuing passports.”

Native American Charged Criminally For Hanging US Flag Upside Down

“A Pennsylvania man who hung an American flag upside down and spraypainted it said he was standing up for the American Indian heritage and exercising his First Amendment rights.  Police, however, took the flag down and charged Joshua Brubaker with a crime: Desecration and insults to the American flag.   Brubaker said he never meant to upset or offend anyone and defended his actions. He and his wife are American Indians and are passionate about the movement.  Brubaker said many in his family served in the military and that gives him the right to express his beliefs by desecrating the flag.  Authorities said there are other ways he could have expressed himself.”

Oklahoma execution renews debate on doctors’ role in lethal injection

“A botched lethal injection in Oklahoma this week has renewed a debate on whether doctors should be banned from executions — or required to participate to make the process more humane.  Some of the nation’s 32 death penalty states mandate doctor participation — including Oklahoma — but critics say what happened there proves a doctor’s presence can’t guarantee the process will go smoothly.  The AMA says it’s unethical for doctors to be involved except in a peripheral way. That’s one reason why the number and identities of physicians who do participate are shrouded in secrecy.”

Tax-Free-Salaried OECD Calls For ‘Income Inequality’ Tax Overhaul

“The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development Wednesday called for an overhaul of the tax system in developed economies to ensure the very rich pay a large share of their incomes, and help limit or roll back the sharp increase in income inequality that has occurred over recent decades.  The Paris-based research body said governments should consider abolishing deductions and exemptions that are disproportionately favorable to high earners, taxing forms of remuneration such as stock options in the same way as wages, and raising a greater share of the total tax take from charges on real estate.”

H-P Pays $108M to DOJ, SEC To Settle Anti-Bribery Allegations

“Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) agreed to pay $108 million to settle federal claims that it violated the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, marking yet another major settlement as the government cracks down on bribery.  The government alleges H-P violated FCPA when its subsidiaries in Poland, Mexico and Russia made improper payments to government officials to obtain or retain public contracts.  The PC maker agreed to pay $108 million to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and Dept. of Justice, and undertake certain compliance, reporting and cooperation obligations.”

Soc. Security, Treasury target taxpayers for parents’ decades-old debts

“Hundreds of thousands of taxpayers who are expecting refunds this month are instead getting letters like the one Grice got, informing them that because of a debt they never knew about — often a debt incurred by their parents — the government has confiscated their check.  The Treasury Department has intercepted $1.9 billion in tax refunds already this year — $75 million of that on debts delinquent for more than 10 years. The aggressive effort to collect old debts started three years ago — the result of a single sentence tucked into the farm bill lifting the 10-year statute of limitations on old debts to Uncle Sam.  No one seems eager to take credit for reopening all these long-closed cases.”
