Top UK official involved in national porn filter arrested for child porn

“A top British government aide who helped create 10 Downing Street’s controversial policy to censor online pornography for the majority of British Internet users has resigned from his post on Monday after being arrested last month on charges of possessing child pornography.  Patrick Rock, a longstanding Tory adviser to Prime Minister David Cameron, had served as the deputy director of policy.  The prime minister’s office confirmed to British press that it had been ‘made aware of a potential offense relating to child abuse imagery’ on February 12, and Rock was arrested the next day at home.”

Kerry to Putin: ‘Don’t invade a country on completely phony pretexts’

It’s really 19th century behaviour in the 21st century.’  Kerry has also threatened to isolate Russia economically and politically and warned of potential asset freezes and visa bans, adding to media and political hype that followed Russia authorization of sending a stabilization force in Crimea on official request from the authorities.  ‘There could be certainly disruption of any of the normal trade routine, there could be business drawback on investment in the country,’ he said.”

Associates defend anti-gun activist found carrying gun inside school

He was also a familiar presence in the hallways of the city’s Harvey Austin Elementary School, where he worked in the after-school program and mentored students.  No one imagined that on Thursday he would show up at the school in possession of a gun, touching off an hours-long lockdown, search and ultimately his arrest on two felony charges.  He was among local activists who stood with Assemblywoman Crystal Peoples-Stokes last year lobbying for a law that would make possessing a gun on school property a felony.”

Once Again, Police Who Shot at Innocents Will Get Their Guns Back

“Without any warning, an LAPD officer aimed his revolver at the driver side cabin and fired a shot. Within seconds, 8 LAPD officers would fire a total of 103 bullets at their vehicle. ‘We are being shot at, we are being shot at!’ the younger woman screamed. She would emerge unhurt. Two bullets hit her elderly mother in the back.  A civilian review reports that ‘the investigation revealed there were ballistic impacts located on seven homes and nine civilian vehicles, which consisted of both gunshots and shotgun pellets.’ They could’ve easily killed someone else, or one another.  A year would pass before these 8 officers learned their fate. Their punishment? Retraining.”

Cannabis Has Been Studied More Than Many FDA Approved Drugs

“Opponents of legalizing cannabis for medicinal purposes are fond of arguing that the plant must be subjected to the same standards of clinical study and FDA review as conventional medicines.  According to a just-published analysis of some 200 newly FDA-approved medications, few conventional drugs are tested in multiple, large-scale clinical assessing safety and efficacy trials prior to market approval.  By comparison, there exists over 20,000 published studies or reviews in the scientific literature referencing the cannabis plant and its cannabinoids, nearly half of which were published within the last five years.”

Out-of-control police overreach meets extreme secrecy

Between 2008 and 2013, the number of people shot by Massachusetts police increased every year. In 2012, police in New York City shot and killed 16 people, nine more the previous year and the most in 12 years. In 2012, Philadelphia police shot 52 people—the highest number in 10 years.  But whether these statistics reflect a national trend is, at this point, an unanswerable question.  That’s because many of the country’s 17,000 police departments don’t release information on use of force by police.”

US looks at ways to prevent spying on its spying

“The U.S. government is looking at ways to prevent anyone from spying on its own surveillance of Americans’ phone records.  As the Obama administration considers shifting the collection of those records from the National Security Agency to requiring that they be stored at phone companies or elsewhere, it’s quietly funding research to prevent phone company employees or eavesdroppers from seeing whom the U.S. is spying on, The Associated Press has learned.  Under the research, U.S. data mining would be shielded by secret coding that could conceal identifying details from outsiders and even the owners of the targeted databases, according to public documents and interviews.”
