Bitcoin Pioneers Arrested While Renegade Banking System Carries On

“Even if the Silk Road charges of true – they would amount to only a fraction of the money laundering activities of HSBC Bank.  HSBC set up an entire subsidiary firm with the specific intention of using it to launder the money of Mexican drug cartels.  It spirited over $7bn of the stuff between 2001 and 2007. HSBC were found guilty on all charges – but no executives were arrested, none of the bank’s branches, operations or websites were closed down.  In fact, HSBC were able to settle it all with a fine, paid by the company, worth just 14% of the profits the bank made in the same year.”

HSBC Judge Approves $1.9B Drug-Money Laundering Accord [2013]

HSBC Holdings Plc (HSBA)’s $1.9 billion agreement with the U.S. to resolve charges it enabled Latin American drug cartels to launder billions of dollars was approved by a federal judge.  HSBC was accused of failing to monitor more than $670 billion in wire transfers and more than $9.4 billion in purchases of U.S. currency from HSBC Mexico, allowing for money laundering, prosecutors said. The bank also violated U.S. economic sanctions against IranLibyaSudan, Burma and Cuba, according to a criminal information filed in the case.”

If It’s Not About The Money . . .

“Ron Martin of Frisco, Texas says his goal is the same as that of police: To encourage safe driving. But the cops’ goal, of course, is different. Their goal is revenue collection. As much of it as possible. By any means possible. ‘Safe driving’ is the window dressing – nothing more.  Martin was arrested by Frisco police (news story here) for warning motorists of a radar trap down the road. ‘Police Ahead’ read his sign.  Cars slowed down – before they got to the trap. Before they could be issued payin’ paper. That they slowed down – what we’re told the cops’ desire most of all – mattered not at all.”

Judge Enforces Spy Orders Despite Ruling Them Unconstitutional

“A federal judge in California who ruled last year that the government’s use of ultra-secret National Security Letters is unconstitutional has defied her own ruling by enforcing other NSLs in the wake of that judgment, according to newly unsealed documents.  U.S. District Judge Susan Illston ruled last March that the letters — a kind of self-issued FBI subpoena that comes with a gag order on the recipient — are an unconstitutional impingement of free speech, and ordered the government to stop using them. The judge reasoned in court documents that since the 9th Circuit will be hearing the appeal of her March 2013, it makes sense to maintain the status quo until the appeals court issues its ruling.”

U.S. ex-DEA agent in unlikely new role with pot investment firm

“In a decade with the DEA, Patrick Moen rose to supervise a team of agents busting methamphetamine and heroin rings in Oregon – before giving it all up to join the nascent legal marijuana industry in nearby Washington state.  In November, the former federal drug agent quit his post to work for a marijuana industry investment firm, and says he relishes getting in on the ground floor of a burgeoning industry he was once sworn to annihilate.  As managing director of compliance and senior counsel for Seattle-based Privateer Holdings, Moen has added his name to a small but growing list of individuals with unlikely backgrounds who have joined state-sanctioned marijuana enterprises.”

A Secret Deal Between The DEA And Mexico’s Sinaloa Drug Cartel?

“An investigation by a major Mexican newspaper, El Universal, has concluded that the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency entered into agreements—dating back to 2000 and continuing through 2012—with Mexico’s largest drug trafficking gang, the Sinaloa Cartel.  According to Jesus Vicente Zambada-Niebla, a highly placed member of the Sinaloa cartel and the son of top Sinaloa leader Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, the deal involved the cartel providing information about rival Mexican drug gangs to the DEA in exchange for the U.S. government agreeing not to interfere with Sinaloa shipments into the United States and the dismissal of criminal charges against cartel participants.”

Cameron, While Trying to Ban Internet, Praises Lapdog Press

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“Cameron has been especially active in attempting to squash British press freedoms in the arena of the alternative media. He is currently trying to ensure that alternative media websites are not distributed in Britain under the guise of attacking the dissemination of pornography.  For Cameron to pretend that the British mainstream press is in any sense energetic or uncontrolled is an almost laughable position. He presents himself in some ways as a defender of the British press – and this is equally ludicrous. He gives this speech while engaged in an active effort to retard the alternative ‘Net media – a stance that is hypocritical, indeed.”

NSA uses radio-waves for surveillance, cyber-attacks on offline systems

“The secret technology uses covert radio waves transmitted from small circuit boards and USB cards clandestinely inserted into targeted computers.  The waves can then be sent to a briefcase-sized relay station intelligence agencies can set up just miles away.  The radio frequency technology – which often needs to be physically inserted by a spy, manufacturer or unwitting user – has helped US spies access computers that global adversaries have gone to great lengths to protect from surveillance or cyber-attack.  The NSA has condemned use of similar software by Chinese attackers against American companies or government agencies.”

Jacob Hornberger: Master and Servant

hornberger2

“You are a billionaire who, along with your spouse and children, lives in a mansion with 20 fulltime servants. One day you discover the existence of a secret video camera in your bedroom. You hire an investigative team that scours your home for other cameras. It discovers that there is a secret camera in every room in the house, including the kitchen, dining room, living room, den, bedrooms, and bathrooms. The investigative team also discovers a secret room in the basement that consists of several monitoring stations, enabling monitors to keep close watch on the goings on in every room in the house. Your team of servants has been secretly monitoring your family’s activities for years.”

An Ex-Con Helps Save a Stranger; an Ex-Cop (Allegedly) Murders One

thelrcblog-5002

“It’s worth noting the contrast between ex-con Ricketts and ex-cop Reeves – the former risked his life to help save a stranger, the other saw nothing amiss in taking the life of a stranger because of a petty disagreement. This is one of myriad illustrations of the fact that a career in law enforcement cultivates contempt for the moral law, and an anti-social disposition. Reasonable people would be justified in believing that ex-cons are safer company than ex-cops.”
