Don’t bystanders have a moral responsibility to intervene, in any way possible, to protect someone being beaten or otherwise abused by a cop?”

Janet Napolitano diverts $5 million to illegal immigrant college aid

“Less than a week after receiving more information regarding the allocation of UC President Janet Napolitano’s $5 million initiative to aid undocumented students, UC Berkeley administrators are already developing a plan to fund enhanced student services and expand financial aid opportunities for these individuals.  Napolitano outlined the allocation of the initiative in a letter sent to the chancellors Dec. 18, $250,000 of which will go toward funding more student services such as resource centers and advising programs. The remaining $410,000 will be used for financial aid, which is to be split between work-study positions and a loan program for undocumented students.”

In one Florida county, nicotine is a banned drug

“Beginning Oct. 1, job seekers applying to work for Flagler County will not only face termination for using tobacco products, but will be denied employment if they admit to using tobacco within one year of their application date.  ‘The tobacco ban applies to anything that would produce nicotine,’ said Joseph Mayer, Flagler County’s community services director. That includes cigarettes, chewing tobacco, e-cigarettes, pipes and snuff.  When asked if the new tobacco ban would apply to the county commissioners, Mayer responded in an email, ‘As such, the policy does not apply to our County Commission or those individuals who may run for office in the future.'”

“Vigorously oppose S 1881, the ‘Nuclear Weapon Free Iran Act.’  I don’t want Iran to have a nuclear weapon. But the name of the bill is a LIE.  As you know, U.S. intelligence agencies attest that Iran DOESN’T have a nuclear weapons program and has no plans to develop one.  Instead, the bill demands that Iran abandon its PEACEFUL nuclear energy program. Even though… You know full well Iran would never agree to this;  They have a right to nuclear energy under the Non-proliferation Treaty.  Even worse, S 1881 has a ‘non-binding’ provision that pledges U.S. support of Israel should Israel choose to attack Iran.  This bill will PREVENT a peaceful settlement with Iran, and will likely lead to war.”

GCHQ and NSA targeted charities, Germans, Israeli PM and EU chief

“British and American intelligence agencies had a comprehensive list of surveillance targets that included the EU’s competition commissioner, German government buildings in Berlin and overseas, and the heads of institutions that provide humanitarian and financial help to Africa.  The papers show GCHQ, in collaboration with NSA, was targeting organisations such as the United Nations development programme, the UN’s children’s charity Unicef and Médecins du Monde.  Britain’s targeting of Germany may prove awkward for the prime minister, David Cameron: in October, he endorsed an EU statement condemning NSA spying on world leaders, including Merkel.”

Stockman: GOP made budget deal a ‘joke and betrayal’

“Stockman added that the budget deal means lawmakers would take a ‘two-year vacation’ from dealing with the country’s fiscal situation and revisit it in 2015 at around the same time as the Iowa straw polls. Without an incumbent in the presidential race, both political parties will be too busy to touch the budget, he said.  Stockman compared the accord to ‘kicking the can’ into ‘low Earth orbit.’  The two-year deal averts deeper cuts to military spending, but Stockman said that’s where lawmakers should have looked for savings. The U.S. no longer faces threats from developed countries and has been ‘fired as the world’s policemen,’ he said.”

Grand Illusion: Social Security Is a Government Insurance Program

“At the age of 17, in 1959, I was taught the truth in a high school civics class. The program is not funded in terms of any insurance program.  First, the Supreme Court of the United States in 1960 declared that the Social Security program is not an insurance program. The case was Fleming v. Nestor.  Second, there is no money in the Social Security Trust Fund. There is merely a stack of IOUs issued by the Treasury Department.  There is no money in this fund. The government has spent every dime.  To get money to pay beneficiaries, the SSA must turn in some of those IOUs to the Treasury. The Treasury must then use money out of the General Fund to pay the SSA its money.”

State Department’s Bar Tab: $415,000 a Year

“While the rest of the government prepared to shut down this fall, the State Department was busy stocking up on embassy liquor supplies.  In September, the State Department spent about $180,000 — and racked up a total of more than $400,000 for the whole year, three times the entire liquor tab for all of 2008.  The liquor bill, split among purchase orders placed at embassies around the world, included some major last-minute pre-shutdown splurges:  $5,625 in ‘gratuity wine’ at the embassy in Rio de Janeiro on Sept. 29, followed by $5,925 in ‘gratuity whiskey’ on the day the shutdown began.  $22,416 in wine at the embassy in Tokyo. $15,900 in bourbon and whiskey in Moscow.”
