Parking Agent Hogs Handicapped Spot, Gets Sacked

“He was supposed to dole out tickets and make sure drivers were sticking to parking rules. But instead, one Houston parking enforcement agent broke the rules he was meant to enforce, getting fired this week after parking illegally in a handicapped spot and cursing at the fed-up civilian who filmed him in action.  Earlier this year, a 12-year-old boy filmed his confrontation with a police officer who had parked his motorcycle in the middle of the sidewalk in order to duck into a store to buy a soda. The boy asked for the cop’s badge number, which he refused to provide before driving off.”

“What gets me about all of this is that the largest, most egregious perpetrators of online criminal activity right now are our own governments, spying on their own citizens, illegally wiretapping our own private communications and nobody cares, nobody will answer for it, it’s just an out-of-scope conversation that is expected to blend into the overall background malaise of our ever increasing serfdom.  If I can’t make various governments and law enforcement agencies get warrants or court orders before they crack my private communications then I can at least  require a court order before I takedown my own customer.”

Silk Road supporters are trolling the FBI with Bitcoin

“Bitcoin users began sending the FBI small fractions of Bitcoin along with public comments to the federal law enforcement agency. A number of the comments include links to news articles about the Central Intelligence Agency supporting the family of drug lords in Afghanistan or helping Contras traffic cocaine in the U.S. A few railed against drug prohibition, while others simply made fart jokes. Some have expressed support for Ross William Ulbricht, the 29-year-old accused of running Silk Road and hiring hitmen to kill two people. And a handful have even used the opportunity to promote their causes and small businesses.”

NSA and GCHQ target Tor network that protects anonymity of web users

“The National Security Agency has made repeated attempts to develop attacks against people using Tor, a popular tool designed to protect online anonymity, despite the fact the software is primarily funded and promoted by the US government itself.  Top-secret NSA documents, disclosed by whistleblower Edward Snowden, reveal that the agency’s current successes against Tor rely on identifying users and then attacking vulnerable software on their computers. One technique developed by the agency targeted the Firefox web browser used with Tor, giving the agency full control over targets’ computers, including access to files, all keystrokes and all online activity.”

State Department: “We cannot make India look at you as an American”

Police Officer Faces Charges In Fatal DUI Crash

“Involuntary manslaughter, homicide by vehicle and DUI are some of the charges Sergeant Thomas Winkis is now facing for his alleged role in an accident September 14th. Sergeant Winkis is accused of crashing his Dodge Challenger into a van operated by 55-year-old David Farries just before midnight. It happened near the intersection of State Road and Ashburner Street. Farries was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and he died of his injuries three days later.  Farries’ daughters say it’s justice Winkis will be charged, but they won’t rest until he is behind bars. They say Farries will never know his youngest grandchild.”

Cop resigns after being charged with selling marijuana from his home

“A Sunrise police officer resigned his position after he and his live-in girlfriend were accused of selling marijuana from their home.  The officer, Joseph Rodriguez-Santiago, 27, was cited last week for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia and quit his job of six years after he was placed on administrative leave.  His girlfriend, Paige Nicole Merritt, 21, is facing two felony charges after she allegedly sold marijuana to a confidential informant on two different occasions, including once in front of Rodriguez-Santiago.”

Drunk state trooper in head-on crash that killed a mother and daughter

“A state trooper is being charged with drunken driving in a head-on collision in Plymouth that killed a Carver mother and daughter last Sunday, Plymouth police said today.  The trooper, 25-year-old John J. Basler, of Kingston, will be charged with operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, and carrying a firearm while under the influence of liquor, according to Plymouth police.  State Police have temporarily relieved Basler of duty and have revoked his license to carry a firearm, Procopio said.”

Will Dianne Feinstein Investigate Her Own Leak Of Classified Info?

“So, we just discussed how it appears that Dianne Feinstein accidentally confirmed what was widely suspected: that the NSA is tapping the internet backbone to get access to emails. This is interesting on many levels, not the least of which is that Feinstein herself has been famously harsh against any kind of leak, regularly arguing that the leaks themselves are more damaging than what the leaks may reveal about US government abuse. In the past, Feinstein has raged against leakers.  She has argued that Ed Snowden is a ‘traitor’ for revealing information, though unlike her, he didn’t reveal this particular program (or at least it hasn’t been reported on yet).”

Dianne Feinstein Accidentally Confirms NSA Tapped The Internet Backbone

“In short, ‘upstream’ capabilities are tapping the backbone itself, via the willing assistance of the telcos (who still have remained mostly silent on all of this) as opposed to ‘downstream’ collection, which requires going to the internet companies directly. The internet companies have been much more resistant to government attempts to get access to their accounts. And thus, it’s a big question as to what exactly the NSA can collect via its taps on the internet backbone.  However, as Kevin Bankston notes, during Thursday’s Senate Intelligence Committee hearing, Dianne Feinstein more or less admitted that they get emails via ‘upstream’ collection methods.”
