“The Obama administration’s plan to provide small arms to the Syrian Rebels was approved by Congress. Good luck finding the transcripts of these committee meetings though… they were classified. When asked about the Senate Intelligence Committee’s vote to arm the rebels, Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), the committee chair, responded ‘It’s classified.’ (Which is a polite way of saying ‘it’s none of your business’) That’s right. Dianne Feinstein — the author of the ‘Assault Weapons’ Ban – doesn’t believe that the American people have a right to know who the government is giving small arms to. That oversight requirement apparently only should apply to American citizens.”

Syria hails U.S.-Russia chemical weapons deal as a ‘victory’ that averts war

“A US-Russian plan to remove Syria’s chemical weapons is a ‘victory’ that averts a war, a Syrian minister said Sunday, as Washington’s top diplomat briefed Israel about the landmark deal.  Some Israeli commentators raised the question of whether Washington would lean on Israel to ratify the international treaty banning the use of chemical weapons.
Israel signed the Chemical Weapons Convention in 1993 but never ratified it, despite demands to do so from Washington and Moscow.”

“A Mississippi woman is facing prison time for having a miscarriage. The state is trying to prove that she caused her childs death by taking drugs when she was pregnant and that makes her a criminal.  If the woman had simply ‘intended’ to kill her child with government approved abortion pills there would be no charges.  Kill your unborn child with intent and you’re free to go. Kill your unborn child by accident and you’re a murderer.”

9/11 happens every day to war torn nations

Missiles raining down from the sky and destroying buildings, killing loved ones and rendering others homeless is no less terrifying than what happened in New York City in 2001. Attacks like Saturday’s are routine in Afghanistan, as they were for eight years in Iraq. The death toll of innocent civilians is in the hundreds of thousands. The refugees number in the millions. For the people of Iraq, 9/11 happened every day for eight long years. It wasn’t two buildings. It was whole cities and their entire civilization that was reduced to rubble.  Americans simply have no concept of what the face of war at home really looks like.”

Republican Rep. Chris Smith pushes for war crimes tribunal on Syria

“A veteran Republican congressman opposed to US missile strikes defended his call Wednesday for a Syrian war crimes tribunal, saying the world should hold that nation’s chemical weapons users to account.  Representative Chris Smith said President Barack Obama should immediately press for the UN Security Council’s establishment of a tribunal to try Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and members of his regime, as well as rebels who the lawmaker said are committing ‘atrocities’ against their own people.  ‘If we made this a real priority, I think we could hold Assad and his abusers to account, as well as those on the rebel side,’ Smith told AFP.”

Iran’s new U.N. nuclear envoy gets harsh reception

“Western envoys gave Iran’s new ambassador to the UN atomic agency a frosty welcome Wednesday, saying Tehran’s new government should waste no time proving to the world it does not want the bomb.  Speaking at a meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s board of governors, US envoy Joseph Macmanus said Iran was refusing to comply with UN Security Council and IAEA resolutions demanding it suspend key parts of its nuclear programme.  Iran denies seeking or ever having sought nuclear weapons and argues that the six UN Security Council resolutions passed against it since 2006 — four with sanctions attached — are illegal.”

They didn’t represent all of the elite, mind you—only a weird segment that seemed to exist in a perpetual state of denial about their own elite status.  My disappointment mutated into a lingering resentment as it became clear that such elites’ showboating ‘populist’ efforts never really seemed to help the poor and the working class.”
