“Several years ago the George W. Bush regime and the Assad regime entering into a rendition-torture partnership by which the CIA shipped a Canadian citizen named Mahar Arar to Syria to have him tortured. The CIA was convinced that Arar was a terrorist but was reluctant to torture a confession out of him. So the CIA turned to its deep-state counterparts in Syria to get the confession. After a year of brutal torture, it was finally determined that Arar was an innocent man. The Syrians released him and he’s now back living in Canada.  So, why the urge to initiate a regime-change operation against the U.S. government’s former partner in the war on terrorism?”

NATO Vows Biggest Buildup against Russia since Cold War

“In particular, Washington and its NATO allies have sought to turn a pair of alleged brief incursions by Russian warplanes across Syria’s northern border into Turkish airspace last weekend as an effective act of war.  ‘NATO is ready and able to defend all allies, including Turkey against any threats,’ NATO’s Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg told reporters as he entered the meeting. He added that NATO was prepared to deploy troops to Turkey and had already taken steps to increase the alliance’s ‘capacity’ and ‘preparedness’ to do so.  The magnification of the alleged violations of Turkish airspace into a confrontation between Moscow and the Western alliance has been driven mainly by Washington.”

Marco Rubio Cites NATO Alliance: We Must Defend Turkey

“‘It’s important for us to be very clear that we will respond and defend Turkey if they come under assault from the Russians,’ he said. ‘Otherwise the entire NATO alliance comes into question.’  A strong signal of support, Rubio stated, would stop the Russians from testing the alliance. He added that he fully expected an international incident such as this one as a consequence of Russia conducting military operations in the Middle East. ‘My sense is that the Russians would not test it, they do not have the capabilities to confront the NATO alliance particularly the United States or even the Turks for that matter,’ he said.”

Pentagon: 50% more drone flights by 2019, adding China, Russia coverage

“The military is doubling down on drones. The expansion would give the Pentagon even more reconnaissance data, expanding capacity in new programs from the Army and special contractors.  Only a vanishingly small percentage of the flights involve actual strikes, but they’ll provide a crucial first step for strikes in new regions, which will require reconnaissance feeds for targeting and command support. Notably, many of the future reconnaissance efforts are intended to monitor operations in Ukraine and the South China Sea. Thus far, drone strikes have been largely confined to Yemen, Somalia, Afghanistan, and Pakistan.”

“Drone strikes conducted by the United States during a 5-month-long campaign in Afghanistan caused the deaths of unintended targets nearly nine out of ten times, leaked intelligence documents suggest.  The apparent 10 percent success rate with regards to a specific span in America’s drone war is among the most damning revelations to surface so far as the result of a series of articles published by The Intercept on Thursday this week which rely on classified and confidential intelligence documents supplied by an unknown source. ‘These docs illustrate what a video game, drained of all humanity, these drone assassinations have become,’ founding editor Glenn Greenwald tweeted.”

Obama’s drone war a ‘recruitment tool’ for Isis: US air force whistleblowers

“Four former US air force service members, with more than 20 years of experience between them operating military drones, have written an open letter to Barack Obama warning that the program of targeted killings by unmanned aircraft has become a major driving force for Isis and other terrorist groups, calling for a rethink of a military tactic that they say has ‘fueled the feelings of hatred that ignited terrorism and groups like Isis, while also serving as a fundamental recruitment tool similar to Guantánamo Bay’.  In particular, they argue, the killing of innocent civilians in drone airstrikes has acted as one of the most ‘devastating driving forces for terrorism and destabilization around the world’.”

Gradually, it has become clear that when operators in Nevada fire missiles into remote tribal territories on the other side of the world, they often do not know who they are killing, but are making an imperfect best guess. The proliferating mistakes have given drones a sinister reputation in Pakistan and Yemen and have provoked a powerful anti-American backlash in the Muslim world.  Despite the bad reviews overseas, drone strikes remain persistently popular with the American public, with about two-thirds expressing approval in polls.”

Bush or Francois Hollande, we need strong and effective leaders to withstand the pressure for excessive and thus counterproductive responses—exactly what the terrorists want.  After 9/11, the United States has needlessly attacked or invaded at least seven Muslim countries and only made the terrorism problem worse.  Presidents Bush and Obama have told the world that these military actions are not a ‘war on Islam’; unfortunately, to those at the other end of the gun barrel, it doesn’t look that way.”
